N S Kinnan a 65 year old farmer near Shelby was killed Monday afternoon when a heavy beam fell while he adjusted a hay sweep. He was alone. his body was found by a son after dusk. Survived by a widow two sons a daughter four sisters and a brother.
Charles A Morrill 69 a pioneer landholder in western Nebraska died in a Scottsbluff hospital Tuesday morning. A Stromsburg High School Class of 1889 graduate he was one of the few survivors unable to attend a recent reunion. Surviving are his widow Marcella J Morrill two sons Ralph of Torrington Wyoming and Charles H Morrill of Morrill two brothers Arthur C Morrill of Stromsburg and Edgar L Morrill of Fort Collins Colorado and a sister Minnie H Morrill of Stromsburg.
The 4 H Club trio won the National Championship in stock judging at Columbus Ohio. One member Harry Silvey hails from the Mother Jewel's Home in York and first succeeded with a Jersey calf donated by Charles Hope who has given twenty six Jersey male calves to the home over six years. Last year Hope and C Edwin Johnson southwest of Osceola each gave Silvey a registered Jersey heifer calf.
The Gab-a-Lots were entertained at the home of Mrs. Frank Mills Wednesday afternoon.
Mrs. David Cole returns to Shelby from Leadville Colorado where her husband works in a mine. A birthday dinner honorings Mr Simonsen’s birthday was held October 10 at Mr and Mrs John Simonsen’s home. Hope Circle served dinner to the American Legion Auxiliary at Polk county convention at the United Brethren church. Mrs. Floyd Hester and children visit Grand Island relatives before returning home. Rev. M A OBoyle returns from a two week Pacific Coast trip. Charles Bemis and Lena Schaal visit Dr and Mrs A J Merrick in Fremont and collect Mrs R G Bemis. Hasterts return from Oklahoma City after two weeks with their son. Mrs Weiser’s birthday party with 25 guests, Anna Belle Mytholar dances. Royal Neighbor Fourth District Convention at Crete. various local ladies attend branch meeting of the Women’s Foreign Missionary Society in Polk. Ed Shaw residence in Shelby gets a Colonial yellow ivory paint coat by Alvin Beerbaum.

Arnold Miller of Omaha, 24, a baker, sustained shotgun injuries while pheasant hunting with friends near the river north of Osceola. The gun discharged when one of the party dropped it. He remained in a Columbus hospital in pain but not seriously hurt and was expected to be discharged next week.
Local church events fill the week with sermons and meetings. A missionary talk by Blanche McCartney from northern India inspires attendees at a W.F.M.S. gathering. Families from Blair, Silver Creek, Rising City, Bruning, Lincoln, Scottsbluff, Crawford, and other nearby towns share meals and greetings during Sunday visits and dinners.
West Side Luther League will meet in the church parlors Thursday evening. The families of Ed Oberg and Mrs. Gunnard Samuelson will serve. Various town visitors and social events are noted including a cheesing party at the parsonage Friday afternoon and dinner guests with the Luther College connections in nearby Benedict and Osceola.
Miss Florence Miller of David City was a dinner guest at the home of her aunt Mrs. Clara Horst on Sunday.
A Swedish singing and talking film set in Skane titled South of the Highway comes to Mage Theatre for Tuesday and Wednesday. It features English superimposed titles so non-Swedish speakers can enjoy the provincial portrait of southern Sweden.
The Hastings District of the Women's Foreign Missionary Society held its annual convention at the Methodist church in Polk. Luncheon for about 140 delegates from thirty churches preceded the business session. Mrs Lawrence Sundberg of Polk was elected president for the coming year. The Standard Bearer Girls organized the evening program and dinner for about 70 guests, with the group planning to reconvene next year in Hastings.
Emil S F Johnson Wesley Ericson and H R Anderson hunted ducks and pheasants. Dorothy Farrell honored guest at pre nuptial tea at Mrs R J Hunsaker home. Stromsburg Girl Reserve staged a three act comedy It s a Ming at the High School auditorium. Several residents moved houses and joined new communities in Stromsburg and nearby towns. Notice urges auto drivers to obtain licenses before December 1 1937 with stricter tests for patrolmen and limited license sites.
Elvera Bernice Floodman of Hordville became the bride of Wilmer E. Johnson of Stromsburg Nebraska at Rev J L Hedbloom’s Denver residence on October 14. Attendants were Mr and Mrs Dean Nelson. The couple plans to live on a Polk area farm after a Denver and Rocky Mountain honeymoon.
The Brotherhood of Greens Chapel and Ladies Aid schedule meetings for October 25, 28, with Mrs Esther Berggren and Mrs D E Powell hosting and Mrs S W Peterson assisting. Numerous local residents and visitors are noted including Johannson, Kries, McKeag, Deay, Newcomer, Hennings, and others visiting relatives in York, Swede Home, and Lincoln.
Mr and Mrs Faye Beardsley returned from church to find friends and relatives had prepared a midday dinner for their fifth wedding anniversary. Guests included Mr and Mrs Ray Fellows and family Stromsburg Mr and Mrs Ansel Fredrickson and son near Swede Flame Mr and Mrs Roger Headley Grandma Headley and Mrs Coda Smith Clarks. A rocking chair was given in memory of the happy occasion.
Mr. and Mrs. Otto Hasselbach of Columbus were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Jack McEnerney on Sunday. The social visit highlighted cordial exchanges and hospitality at the McEnerney home.
A dog ran into the street and became fastened to a car's steering gear when hit by Dick Thesing's vehicle. Town mechanic Butch Mills freed the dog, which then ran off uninjured. Residents watched the incident amid rain while nearby football fans gathered for a Lincoln game.
A jury awarded Mrs Mildred E Honnell 2250 for breach of promise after she sued Fred C Campbell for 13452 80. Campbell testified the relations were business only and denied social or written letters. The case cites prior divorce of Honnell and a 5000 property settlement.
Local cast presents a community stage reading of Death Takes the Steering Wheel as part of a temperance and safety campaign. The Sunday evening performance at 7 30 features a judge district attorney defense attorney bailiff coroners detective and local witnesses with Dr Herbert Ford of Lincoln portraying the defense attorney. No charge with a free will silver offering.
Rev and Mrs Simon G Carlson of Stromsburg announce the coming marriage of their daughter Eleanor to Gerhard Wallgren Jr son of Mr and Mrs Gerhard Hallgren Sr of Chicago The wedding is set for October 23 at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Stromsburg The couple will reside in Chicago
