The Polk County Cornhusking contest held Friday October 20 at Arthur Morrill farm drew about 2000 people with 500 cars in the field. Marvin Mace won first prize 17.39 bushels earning $20, Kenneth Monson second 17.03 bushels for $10, Elmer Berger third 16.36 bushels. Other contestants received $1 each.
With colder weather in Polk County farmers were warned that second growth forage sorghums pose serious risk to livestock after a killing frost. Dr S W Alford of the Nebraska College of Agriculture issued the warning, noting prussic acid can kill quickly. Immediate treatment with sodium thiosulphate helps, but properly cured or siloed sorghum is safe for later feeding.

Miss Alice Lamoree daughter of Mr and Mrs P J Lamoree of Stromsburg and Lyle Dickson son of Mr and Mrs George Dickson of Benedict were married at the Lutheran parsonage in Benedict at eight o clock Friday evening October 21 Mr and Mrs Lavelle Lamoree attended the couple. They will live with the groom s parents. The wedding followed school affiliations with the bride a Stromsburg High School student and the groom having Benedict school ties.
The Lutheran Church choir in Osceola hosts a 7 30 pm candlelight service next Sunday commemorating the reformation. The program includes anthems by Warren Johnson Eugene Johnson Rev John Oberg readings and scripture prayers with a short talk titled The Light Lost and Revived.
Republicans held a county rally at Scott Hall due to bad weather. Speakers included Dr. T W Bass state treasurer candidate Ray C Johnson state auditor candidate Richard O Johnson of Lincoln and Herman Wellensick of Grand Island. Frank G. Arnold will speak to taxpayers and voters at the District Court Room in Osceola Nebraska on Saturday October 29 at 1 30 p m. The public is invited to attend.

Carl Cederburg of this city was elected President of this district of the Farmers Union at the convention held at York last Wednesday. Also elected were Frank Swangon as Vice President and T. A. Collins as Secretary and Treasurer. Polk County provided the largest delegation with 24 members. special speakers included H. G. Keeney and Fred Hagge. Osceola attendees included Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Boden and daughter, Francis, and Mr. and Mrs. Mark Timm.
Peter Akeson, born March 4 1865 in Lind ryd Sweden, died Sunday night at age 73 years 7 months 19 days. He lived in Polk County since 1900 after time in Sweden and Minnesota. He never married leaving no immediate relatives in America. brothers and nephews remain in Sweden. Friends here mourn his departure and prayers ask for wisdom to number days.
First graders collected and studied Indian culture with readings on habits and tales of the red race. The room features a display of Indian articles including pottery beads bead bags tomahawk peace pipes deer horn buffalo teeth arrow heads and small bark canoe. Contributions came from Osceola residents with ties to reservations or purchases from Southwest Indians.

The Union Pacific railroad starts daily freight runs between Grand Island and Lincoln effective Oct 20, excluding Sundays. The Grand Island origin freight departs at 4 00 a m and reaches Lincoln at 10 30 a m with the return from Lincoln at 2 30 p m to Grand Island.
The Polk County Farm Bureau selected Miss Mary Koehler, daughter of Mr and Mrs Wesley Koehler of Osceola, as assistant for Polk County Agent H L Peterson. Fourteen applications were received. all but one were from women. Rexall One Cent Sale runs twice yearly with fall sale next week at Crouse-frex Drug Co.
Reports on the pheasant season conflict as some hunters bag four roosters and one hen daily while others return with one or none. Many say hens are more plentiful than roosters this year. Dense undergrowth and weed growth provide hiding, and hunters note birds are not theirs unless killed outright.
