Phosphorous Proves An Aid To Wheat

University of Nebraska experiments show soils rich in phosphorous increase winter wheat survival by about 25 percent and speed spring recovery. Dr. Weldon notes limited eastern acres lack phosphorous, recommends field tests before wide phosphate use to gauge root growth, heads per plant, and yields.

Osceola 4-H Boy Raymond Schott Wins at Ak-Sar-Ben

Raymond Schott of Osceola won two blue ribbons at Ak-Sar-Ben in a Polk County 4-H club event. He exhibited eight pigs across weight classes, sold them for 153.44 total, and earned a premium above market price of one to two cents per hog for the extra fine animals.

Polk Couple Celebrates 60th Wedding Anniversary

Mr and Mrs John Nordstrom of Polk County marked sixty years of marriage with an open house hosted by their daughter at her home. Married in Sweden on October 28, 1878 the couple emigrated to the United States in 1879 and settled on a Polk County farm before moving to their current Polk home in 1929. Their three daughters N S Nyberg Alma Colorado W J Johnson and Mrs Albert Peterson attended along with many friends. a fourth daughter Mrs W J Thelen of San Diego could not attend.

Annual Polk County Farm Bureau Meeting Set for November 18

The Polk County Farm Bureau will hold its annual meeting at the Rapp Hotel on Friday November 18 with a noon covered dish lunch. W. L. Fire Destroys Barn and Granary North of Polk

A large barn and granary on the Mrs. Joe Swanson farm five miles north of Polk burned at noon Thursday. Firefighters arrived too late to save the structure. feed and corn were destroyed and several animals were moved to safety. Two weeks earlier the Maurice Lindburg farm home north of Polk was lost to fire, prompting requests for a new fire truck and equipment.

County 4-H Clubs Plan County Luncheon

The county 4-H executive committee scheduled a county wide covered dish luncheon for all 4-H members and leaders. It will be at the Methodist Church basement Osceola on Friday November 11 at 7 p.m. Members are asked to bring a covered dish with Gordon Fredrickson in charge of arrangements. A detailed program will appear next week.
