Polk County voters are urged to register ahead of election day with a two week newspaper ad drive by County Clerk Dale Frizzell. Osceola highs announce National Merit test for 1968-69 entry with a Feb 27 1968 date and a $1 fee, alongside local sports and community updates.
District governor and Mrs Petersen attended Osceola Lions ladies night dinner with Dick Howe presiding. Postponed pancake feed now set for Nov 18. Pakistan pictures to be shown at City Hall during Chamber of Commerce meeting with Archie Klein inviting attendees. Open house planned for Golden Wedding Anniversary Nov 5 in Shelby Parish Hall.
The Huskies of Shelby defeated Gresham 49-21 in a Crossroads Conference game. Shelby led 33-0 at halftime as Dan Wombacher rushed for two touchdowns and caught one on a 27 yard pass from Kevin Abbott.
At the Educational Service Unit Board meeting on Oct 16 a comprehensive health program was approved. Examinations will start for pupils in all unit schools with requests from districts totaling over 7 000 pupils. Max funding set at 600 per pupil for under writing trainable mentally handicapped programs. Speech audio therapy to all counties reaffirmed with target date Feb 1 1968. A resident psychologist and reading specialist are being sought with same Feb 1 1968 target. Also notes a 40th wedding anniversary dinner for Lloyd Hanquist of Hordville with 26 relatives at noon and 65 at 2 30 reception. Continuous local weather and farm notes follow.
Osceola high school students in grades 9 through 12 plan to canvass homes Sunday evening October 29 from 6 30 to 7 30 to raise coins for UNICEF. They will gather at the Methodist Church at 6 30, with contributions also accepted at First National Bank Osceola for forwarding to New York headquarters. Refreshments follow their return.
Brownie Girl Scout Troop 138 held investiture ceremonies for nine new members last Thursday. Mary Armbruster Debra Bryan Janna Conrad Janet Hiemer Jill Hiemer Sonia Senn Paula Smith Karen Sterup Jean Soukup received their pins as mothers and guests attended. The troop now has 17 members led by Mrs. Richard Odgers and Mrs. Jack Tindall.
A 6-6 tie between Osceola and Polk featured two flukish touchdowns. Osceola’s Cerny threw a tipped interception set up Neuhaus’s 2 yard score while Polk’s Stevens and Wieseman sparked late runs. Osceola finishes 4-0-1 in league and hosts Palmer tonight.
Treats and prizes await all young goblins at the annual Halloween party and costume contest. The event starts at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Legion Hall and is co sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and the American Legion.
Steve Peterson of Stromsburg secures the $5 prize in the Armchair Quarterbacks Contest after predicting upset-filled football results. He and several others misread Osceola Polk, Michigan State, and Colorado outcomes, with Friday at 5 p.m. set as the deadline for last week’s contest and another entry in today's Record.
