CN and Mrs Flora Stevens state organizer attended an 8:30 Monday breakfast at Mrs W W Norton’s home in Osceola. A short business meeting followed with assistance from Mrs Carl Johnson Mrs George Inness and Mrs W Til Norton.
The WSCS met on October 7 with Mrs. Lou Richmond leading devotionals. A silent auction of useful articles was held among attendees. The Friendly Neighbors Club gathered last Thursday with costumes from clowns to witches and Gloria Dunning winning for the most original outfit. A donation drive collected a box of garments for University Hospital in Omaha. Numerous local residents visited, hosted guests, and attended events including church dedications, parsonage openings, and college homecomings. Several trips to Lincoln, Stromsburg, Columbus, and nearby towns were noted along with family visits and a birthday celebration for Garry Nelson bringing together relatives.
Nebraska Ordnance Plant land near Mead offers 17 tracts for three year leases on a cash basis for agricultural use. Bureau proposals suggest smaller Davis Creek dam and lake south of Scotia with water impounded upstream in Turtle Creek basin. The Geneva congregation heard the Baldwin Model 10 organ for the first time last Sunday as a Lincoln firm completed a partial installation. Terry Lee Russell of Blue Springs raised subscriptions to a magazine, earning a one dollar credit per sale toward his pony. He brought home a four month old black and white Shetland colt named Cisco-Wymore Arbor State after reaching his goal of thirty subscriptions. Albion men organize a Junior Chamber of Commerce and plan a Levi hop for teenagers tied to Pancake Day.
Dr. R L Bierbower will take the Place of Dr Harold Daum who is returning to school. Bierbower was born and raised in Giltner Nebraska and spent three months with Dr Ray Hill at Milford while waiting for call to service Shelby Sun.
A North Dakota farm couple, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Edwards, battle a hive that has occupied their home for seven years. They plan a new house on the same site after failed attempts to remove the bees by gas, smoke, and poison as swarms persist around the structure.
A Holt County agent, A Neil Dawes, was named recipient of the National Distinguished Service Award by the National Association of County Agricultural Agents in Salt Lake City. The award honors Dawes for outstanding work with 4-H youth, ranchers, soil fertility, and grass management in Holt County. Election coverage notes polling places in Osceola and East Pleasant Home with eight amendments on the ballot and races for county offices. John S. Anderson and Philip Nyberg, both incumbents, face opposition in two races.
Busy Belles Extension Club gathered at Mrs. Hollis Campain's home on October 11 with five visitors. Dickie Bennett a polio patient at St Francis Hospital Grand Island is reported advancing in therapy and enjoying a renewed hobby building a collection of cars from plastic models and other miniature subjects during treatment.
The fall York Deanery meeting of the Lincoln Diocesan Council of Catholic Women met at St Marys parish hall with Mrs Maurice Clark presiding. Speakers included Father John Howe on the post war world and Father Daniel Cooper on marital problems. Monsignor Luke Mandeville closed with a talk on sustaining religious vitality at home. Spring meeting planned for Seward.
On Thursday October 14 Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Timm marked their 34th wedding anniversary with a surprise party. Attendees included Mrs. Viola Wieseman Mr. and Mrs. David Jones and family Mr. and Mrs. Carl Timm and Gregg Mrs. Dollie Hanshew Mrs. Thelma Gibbons and Bonnie and Mr. and Mrs. Leon Hopwood from Shelby. A bouquet and corsage were given to Mrs. Timm and cake cookies and ice cream were served at lunch.
Henry Galus was elected president of the Polk County Farm Bureau at a Wednesday night meeting. Chas Walgreen was chosen vice president with officers including Mrs H P Tewell secretary and Mrs Donald Hanquist chairwoman of Associated Women. Delegates to the state convention include Galus and Tewell among others. board members span Pleasant Home Platte Stromsburg Canada Valley and Osceola units. Following the vote, county unit entertainment and county ladies hosted refreshments led by Mrs P W Aker.

Lawrence Twarling collapsed from a heart attack while shucking corn in Stromsburg. He was transported to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition.
Genoa romped Osceola 18 to 0 at Osceola as Genoa capitalized on fumbles and a key interception. Osceola's Jan Grossnicklaus rushed for 92 yards, Triba 63, with the Bulldogs forcing four Genoa fumbles and two lost. Osceola travels next to Clarks to face an unbeaten squad.

Elected for the coming year were President Linda McKeag Vice President Betty Lou Burritt Secretary Barbara Wieseman News Reporter Donna Rutter Historian Barbara Ann Buresh. The next gathering is set for Linda McKeag’s home on November 2.
Mr and Mrs George E Berck announce the engagement of daughter Sharon Lea to Donald L Buchholz son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Buchholz of Shelby No immediate wedding plans have been made Miss Berck is in her second year at Wesleyan University in Lincoln Mr Buchholz was honorably discharged from the armed forces six months ago and is now affiliated with his father in the grocery business in
Members of the ABB Birthday Club were entertained at the home of Mrs Hannah Monson on Monday evening.
Roger Johnson, son of Mr and Mrs Ted Johnson, fell into a corn elevator while loading a crib. His right hand and arm were crushed by a tumbling rod but no bones were broken. He freed himself, was bruised, and warned others to be more careful around machinery.
Polk County Extension Clubs elect officers and set training dates at Shelby November 15 and Stromsburg November 16 at 2 p m led by Home Agent Margaret B Crosby. Crosby returned from the National Meeting of Home Extension Agents in Chicago with 583 agents present. The article warns cooks about grease fires advising lid cover or baking soda to smother flames and to keep baking soda nearby.
