Polk High defeated Osceola 14 to 4 in a hard fought Friday night game. Volz and Adams starred for the visitors and locals, with Osceola showing improved line play and tackling. A crowd of about 550 witnessed the T formation effort and late scoring by Polk.
The Honda Knot carried the first World War I dead to return to the United States. San Francisco bells tolled as Navy and Coast Guard escorts watched a wreath deliver. Presidents and Legion officials attended as the bodies were disembarked at Oakland and sent to 15 centers nationwide.
Polk gym hosted a 6:30 dinner for the Polk County Teachers Association meeting last Wednesday. Officers for the year were elected: Albert Hillbrink Shelby superintendent as President, Mrs Swinkbank Stromsburg Vice President, Leonard Hanson Osceola superintendent Secretary, Miss French Stromsburg Treasurer, with Supt French as delegate and Leonard Hanson as alternate to the State Delegate Assembly in Lincoln in December.
Ruby Walgreen of Osceola, a Luther College freshman, receives the Lutheran Brotherhood scholarship for 1947 50. Awarded by the Synodical Lutheran Brotherhood of the Augus tana church, it honors character, scholarship and leadership and is offered to one student per church school. Walgreen is active in home community and campus activities.
Doctors O. O. Wallace and W. F. Monson attended a meeting in David City on animal health focusing on tuberculosis and Bangs’ disease. Discussion covered treatment and prevention with current testing and potential future compulsory testing due to links between animal diseases and human illness.
Nebraska totals show $116,354,000 pledged in Series E F and G U S Savings Bonds from Jan 1 to Sep 30 1947 with Polk County contributing $133 018 75 in September. E and G series dominate Nebraska purchases as September bond sales rise by 1.56 million from August.

Miss Margaret Deeds daughter of Mr and Mrs Dana Deeds Lincoln Nebraska wed Edward F Murphy in Stamford Connecticut on September 12 The bride associate food editor of the Woman s Home Companion and a University of Nebraska graduate Murphy Harvard Law School graduate is with the American Agricultural Chemical company The couple will live in Jackson Heights New York City The bride is remembered by Osceola residents who recall her living there about twenty five years ago.
A Ford Super DeLux donated for the Bernardine Sisters of St. Francis Hospital to use personally. Delivered Thursday October 8 by Bob Sigler of a local Ford dealer, after notice from L. W. Smead of Dearborn Michigan. Sisters thank generous friends. hospital needs a car acknowledged.
Local team hosts St Bonaventure of Columbus Friday October 17 and then GenOA on Wednesday October 22 at Osceola Fair Grounds. Team seeks to rebound after close losses and aims for strong performance under lights this week.

An act of Congress dated June 2, 1924, declares all American-born Indians U.S. citizens whether living on reservations or not.
Major Evans G Stephens announces distribution of Victory Medals and Defense Service Medals to eligible World War II veterans at 1228 M St Lincoln. Defense Service Medal applies to services between Sept 8 1939 and Dec 7 1941 Pearl Harbor. Victory Medal covers service from Pearl Harbor to Dec 31 1946.
Anna Widga 81 of 1234 West 14th Street San Pedro died September 22 at San Pedro Hospital after 18 years in the city. A Sweden native she came to the United States 61 years ago and belonged to First Methodist Church Swede Plain Nebraska. Survived by five daughters Lillie Beckman El South Gate Sigrid Schneider Monte Mildred Cotter Lincoln Nebraska Winnie Anderson Shelton Washington Irene Widga San Pedro two sons Melcher and Richard Widga Polk Nebraska 14 grandchildren and four great grandchildren Funeral services were held Thursday at Halverson Mortuary San Pedro.
Dixie Pfeiffer, 11, daughter of Mr and Mrs Carl Pfeiffer, was home alone when pony threw her. She set her own broken arm using First Aid knowledge and waited for help. X rays later confirmed the bone was set correctly.

Nels Paulson writes from Tyringe Sweden October 6 1947 describing a ten day Atlantic crossing and arrival by harbor of Gothenburg. He notes Tyringe growth population over 3000 and changes since leaving Nebraska including farming, weather, and local schools. He plans winter travels in Sweden and possible return to Nebraska in spring while enjoying records back home.
Steve Swanson, a Spanish American War veteran, died September 29 at his Riverton home in Wyoming. Survived by his wife, three brothers and three sisters including Mrs. August Carlson and Mrs. Esther Johnson of Osceola and Otto Swanson of Swede Home. Carlson and Johnson attended the funeral.
The Record announces Dale VanHorn aged 22 of Stockton Kansas as a new record employee. He recently joined the newspaper business after two years of journalism at Denver University and serves as a veteran of 31 months in the army in the Pacific Theatre.
