Silver Creek defeated Osceola 6 to 0 after a steady defensive effort and cautious offense. The game followed a rain shower with slick turf and few fumbles, featuring power plays and a late first half touchdown on a pass to the left flat after an interception.
Mr and Mrs Jim Krance of St Paul Nebraska assume management of the Corn Palace Cafe in Osceola. The previous owners Wm Matzen sold their household goods and left for Bennington. The Matzen family may seek cafe work in eastern Nebraska. the Krances arrive after Krance ran the Legion Club and restaurant in St Paul. New hours are 6 am to midnight.
Miss Lorraine Larson and Harold Schulte of Omaha were united in marriage at St John’s Church with a double ring ceremony. Attendants were Mr and Mrs Norman Hangen. The bride wore a ruby street length dress with black accessories and a three strand pearl necklace. A wedding breakfast followed at the groom’s brother in law and sister’s home. A honeymoon trip to Denver and the mountains preceded their plans to live in Omaha.
Osceola Local No. 627 announces an educational and entertainment meeting Monday October 13 at 8 p m in District 53 Schoolhouse. State secretary P D Petersen will speak, editor will show motion pictures, music by Osceola High School girls sextette, directed by John W Blezek, refreshments served. The event invites those interested in a cooperative farm program saving patrons millions.
The Columbus Veterans Administration Office at City Hall will open Mondays through Fridays from 8am to 3pm starting Monday October 6. The office will be closed Saturdays and all staff will be on duty during the weekday hours.
The notice of tax sale for properties with delinquent lists appears in this issue. The list is smaller than usual this year, reflecting a healthy territory. In past years it ran two pages. many taxes have been paid recently, with more likely to be settled despite owners’ oversights.

Before steamboats the Missouri served as a major westward route with keelboats as the typical vessel. Keelboats 60 to 70 feet long carried explorers and fur traders, built mainly in Pittsburgh and costing 2000 to 3000 dollars. Crews toiled towing with long cords, pole propulsion, or oars, rarely using sails when conditions allowed.
Polk County 4 H members showcased at Ak-Sar-Ben with Tom Brigham earning multiple ribbons and top litter praise from judge Dean Blizzard. Be aware of interjections on quality and faults among entries as the event highlighted strong Shorthorn and gilt classes and a large overall turnout.

Mr and Mrs Bert Bick and Mr and Mrs Lawrence Bye from near Staplehurst spent last Monday at the Harley Varner residence, sharing an afternoon call and friendly conversation.

Osceola Implement Company announces addition of Diamond T truck line to its catalog alongside the implement division. An ad in this issue details model options tonnage and ratings while a cab forward line is also offered. Display expected by week end at company headquarters on the highway for inspection.
The Most Rev. Louis B. Kucera will administer Confirmation at St. Vincent Church at 7 30 p m on October 15 for a class of 24 children and adults. It will be his first Osceola visit since the parish was established a year ago.
Fresh estimates from the Fish and Wildlife Service put yearly losses from rats at 63 million dollars. The U S rat population roughly matches the human population, with about half living on farms.
Sixty five rural teachers met in Osceola under County Superintendent Olive McBeth for the annual institute held in the Methodist Church basement. The program featured a workshop on Art of Today led by Dora Von Bargan of the University of Nebraska with supervision and instruction. A St Vincent’s Church basement dinner followed, prepared by the ladies of the congregation.
Margaret Crosby moved to Osceola Friday and assumed duties as Polk County Home Extension Agent on Monday. She comes from Alma Nebraska in Harlan County and fills a post vacant since January after Miss Eva Bute resigned. Crosby and her father R B Crosby are staying at Mrs George Berck’s residence in south Osceola.
The Methodist Church Fall Festival drew a large crowd with 250 dinners served by church ladies and youth as waitresses. Volunteers reported $725 from the auction and $170 for the Youth Fellowship lunch stand, with many items donated by locals.
The American Foundation for Animal Health warns of a potential hay season crisis as hog cholera threatens pork supplies. Farmers are urged to vaccinate fall pigs early, maintain sanitation, and follow five protective steps to prevent outbreaks and protect swine herds.
The 7th District American Legion and Auxiliary hold their annual convention in Dodge starting at 10 a m on October 15 with Legion and Auxiliary leaders from numerous towns. Sessions cover service work life insurance post activities and district programs followed by greetings and round table discussions. The day ends with reports, colors, and an evening program by the Dodge Post.
Osceola Chapter of the Future Farmers of America held its first meeting in the Vocational Agriculture room at the high school. Planning for the year’s work and an initiation are on the agenda. Eligible members are boys enrolled in vocational agriculture. Mr. and Mrs. M. A. Mills of Osceola and Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Brigland of New York City visited the Joe Karges home Thursday afternoon. Mrs. George Reed stayed Wednesday with her mother, Mr. Reitz in Stromsburg. The Karges family and Doris called at John Voichoske’s home Thursday evening. Joe Miller and daughters moved into their new Clark’s home. Clarence Reitz of Holdrege stayed with his sister Mrs. George Reek and husband. Marguerite Senn Vera Beckmeyer and Vida Beckmeyer visited the Heitzman home Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Leroy Rhodes Carolyn and Mr. Billy Biles of Pender were evening guests at the Heitzman home. Joe Karges and girls were Sunday dinner guests at John Sellars in Columbus.
Three public sales are listed this week with details for Osceola and Polk. On Tuesday October 14 Will Hern bloom and C E Johnson hold four joint sales one mile east of the Fair Grounds at Osceola offering farm machinery livestock and more. Also Tuesday Joe Bernt will sell 19 miles northeast of Osceola a team of horses farm machinery and household goods. On Saturday October 18 A Isaacson administrator for the P A Hanquist estate will sell a complete line of household goods in Polk.
Osceola resident Victor N. Cerny, sergeant in the Air Reserve, reports to Topeka Army Air Field for a 15 day refresher course. About 250 officers and enlisted men attend, with eight periods planned from July 3 to October 31, 1947. Cerny earned a European Theater Ribbon with six battle stars and the Presidential Citation with one Oak Leaf Cluster. he married and has one child.
Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Withrow and their son in law Allan McArgle of Toledo Ohio spent Saturday in Stromsburg. They were entertained at dinner Saturday noon at the home of Misses Mary and Margaret Buckley. Mrs. L. H. Headstrom was among the guests.
Mrs. Leonard Nelson and Mrs. Withrow hosted dinner guests including Beulah Buckley formerly of Stroms burg. Ira Banta returned home after four weeks with her daughter and son-in-law. Guests from Chicago Omaha and Sco tia visited for church meetings and football weekend trips. A F Nordstrom suffered a heart attack and stayed home. Kenneth Hultquist from York visited his mother. B C Bilhorn and Harry Miller of Sco tia visited Evins family after Nebraska Minnesota game. J L Olson and Edna Olson traveled to Omaha on business with group staying at George Olson home.
