Recruits Urge Volunteer Before Induction

A pre induction rule requires volunteers to enlist before being called for the pre induction examination. Sgt Springgate at York Recruiting Station cites that a draftee cannot volunteer for regular services after draft board notice. A hopeful enlistee must reach a recruiting station before mailed induction notices arrive.

Shower for Bride Richards at Legion Club

Mrs. David Richards formerly Patty Johansen was honored at a miscellaneous shower in the legion club rooms on Sunday October 3. Osceola Youth Robert Scholz Dies From Polio

Robert Scholz 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Scholz, died Saturday October 9 from polio after ten days at Lincoln Orthopedic Hospital. A Osceola High School 1946 graduate and University of Nebraska junior, he was honored in school. Survived by parents and brother Raymond, services held October 13 at Kepner Funeral Home with interment in Osceola cemetery.

Emil Bahr Dies Sudden Heart Attack at 71

Emil Bahr died suddenly of a heart attack at one o'clock Sunday morning at his home four and a half miles northeast of Shelby. He was 71 and survived by his wife two sons Neal and Robert a daughter Mrs Lyle Hopwood and five grandchildren Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Shelby Methodist Church with burial in Shelby cemetery.

Rathburn of Omaha buried in Osceola funeral

J Q Rathburn of Omaha longtime Osceola resident died in Omaha on October 5 at age 87. He leaves a widow a son John a daughter Mrs Mattie McConnell three grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services were held Friday at Crosby Kunold Funeral Home in Omaha and burial followed in Osceola cemetery.

The Commodity Credit Corporation announces corn price support programs for 1948 in Polk County at 1.35 dollars per bushel. Loans run through June 30, 1949 with repayment by Sept 1, 1949. Storage and moisture rules apply for cribs and shelled corn. Purchase option requires a signed agreement by June 30 1949 with a 0 5 cent per bushel fee. Delivery in Sept 1949.

Social Security Expert to Visit David City and York

A Social Security Administration representative will visit David City at the Post Office at 10 30 a m October 20 1948 and York at the Post Office at 9 00 a m October 21 1948. Joseph S Sewall encouraged anyone seeking information to contact the representative. He noted death benefits for survivors and retirement benefits for those over age five, and warned that about one in eight retirement applicants lose payments by delaying contact.

Victor Conklyn Buried in Milwaukee

Miss Olive M. McBeth, returning from Milwaukee with 30 county superintendents, learned of the death of Victor Conklyn in Milwaukee. He was 60, served as chief electrician in Milwaukee schools, survived by his widow and several children. Remains of Victor’s parents were interred beside her husband in Osceola after their deaths.
