Farmers named Richard C. Sealey chairman for a three year term Ernest E. Lees vice chairman for a two year term and Leo Cockson as third member for a one term. Richard C. Sealey, chairman of the Agricultural Stabilization & Conservation County Committee, announced that diverted acreage under the 1965 feed grain and voluntary wheat certificate programs may now be grazed without losing benefits. Grazing began Oct 1 after a six month no grazing period, and applies only to diverted feed grain and wheat acres. Hay cannot be harvested on these acres, and land under the conservation reserve program remains ungrazed or unharvested all year. About 1388 county farms participate in the 1965 feed grain and wheat certificate programs.

The Polk County ASC committee expanded programs for 65, adding to farm income. In 1965 farmers received 1.799 million dollars in feed grain diverted payments, 1.268 million in feed grain price support, 49 thousand in diverted acres, 372 thousand in wheat certificate payments, totaling 3.489 million dollars. The county also administers storage loans and conservation cost sharing, supporting dams terraces open drains and grass seedings with lasting countywide benefits.

Polk County CROP drive to aid self help projects begins
At an REA building meeting on October 6 Polk County voters endorsed an immediate CROP canvass to run through November 1. The program invites farmers to donate grain or cash with grain converted to 51 percent protein soy food for distribution under Christian mission supervision. Gifts support self help projects and food aid under multiple relief channels including Church World Service and Lutheran World Relief. Local co op elevators and grain companies will receive grain for CROP.

Moisture supplies show rainfall for the week ending Saturday at none. Surface and subsoil moisture are surplus with winter wheat excellent and irrigated corn and sorghums good. Crops harvested 5 to 15 percent. sorghums 11-17 percent moisture, others 20-28 percent. Feed supplies above average. field work includes alfalfa hay, silage, and raw crop harvest. Heavy winds aid drying. several feeders seek cattle but many are busy for two to three weeks.

Walter Berck family named outstanding conservation family
The Walter W. Berck family was named outstanding conservation family of Polk County at a banquet in Ogallala on Oct 4. The award, co sponsored by Farmers Coon Grain Assn of Stromsburg and the Polk County Farm Bureau, was presented at the Nebraska Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts convention. The Bercks earned the honor for their land conservation program including three dams and other methods built since 1962 to control runoff over about 1515 acres.
