A Nebraskalike crowd at Leon games brings noise and radio chatter while fans discuss plays and calls. Mike Snodgrass seeks the return of a wallpaper steamer misjudged as junk after a city dump run. Local historians consider collecting elder tales to preserve the state's history.
Erwin W. Bud Anderson of Omaha won the Armchair Quarterbacks football contest with 11 correct picks. Close behind were John E. Cederberg Mrs Don Hayes of Silver Creek and Kathy Rodene of Osceola with four misses.
The Red Cross Bloodmobile program in Polk County lists eight community benefits such as full blood needs for residents and hospital patients, directed donations, and national rare donor support. It also states three obligations: donors, funding, and volunteers. The Stromsburg visit is planned for November 1.
Osceola and St Edward battled to a 6 6 tie on homecoming night as the Bulldogs earned their first touchdown of the season. Osceola trailed 6 0 before a fourth quarter drive capped by Bill Engert from the 2. Steve Hiller had a 72 yard run for St Edward’s lone score. Osceola heads to Leigh for a 7 30 p m non conference game.
A daughter named Linda Mae born to Mr and Mrs Don Wombacher of Tacoma Washington weighing 7 pounds 13 ounces.
Local riders earned top spots in multiple classes at Sundays Osceola event. JoAnn Stevens of Polk led pony pleasure and junior flag race, Tom Stevens of Polk dominated junior pole bending and Cloverleaf events, with Osceola riders Mike Treffer Jon Tenniges and Doug Helms placing in several divisions.
Homecoming Day at Osceola featured sunny parade and clear evening game. Deanna Prell and Roger Klein named Homecoming Queen and King, with attendants and crown bearer listed. Prizes went to seniors for floats Eve of Destruction, Who will be the next in line, and I'm Down. grades awarded in the younger division.
Osceola Lions plan a pancake feed Saturday October 16 with members serving as chefs for a four hour all you can eat event from 4 to 8 pm. Tickets sold by Lions members grant entry and a full meal with details and location to be announced next week.
Death announced in Sweden on Monday September 27 for Sten Nordstedt 81 a Central City merchant who founded a local men’s clothing store. Funeral and burial planned in Central City with arrangements pending. Survived by daughter Mrs William Patterson of New York City and a niece Mrs Elsa Erlandson in Stockholm.
Osceola contestants led by Terry Mentink and Joan Stevens place in stake and flag events. Osceola riders Adriance listed with Loren Treffer and Jim Marak claim top spots in innertube and rescue races while Polk and Stromsburg entrants earn other medals. Mahout: results include Tom Stevens Spike Stevens Sev ert Peterson Merlin Larson and others across multiple races.
Plans are under way to run an in service mathematics workshop for elementary teachers at Osceola Schools. Sponsored by the State Education Dept, materials are free. No college credit but completion counts toward certification. First 52 hour session starts 7 p.m. Thursday Oct 14 at the Osceola high school.
Gary Percy reports rainfall of 3.50 to 4.40 inches for the week ending Saturday. Surplus soil moisture and generally good conditions for irrigated crops with some fair areas. Winter wheat irrigated corn sorghums rated good others fair. Feed supplies average. Main farm work limited by rain. wheat sowing, silage, and alfalfa hay put up when possible. Early frost hurt corn sorghum and other crops more than feared. Feeder cattle demand remains steady.
