Janice Jackie and Alyce McDonnell were selected as one of three local acts to perform on the Horace Heidt show in Norfolk. The trio joins two other acts from Norfolk after a regional audition with 43 contenders.
In Butler County, E. F. Yindrick grows pears with a total weight of 24 percent pounds. Each fruit measures 12 inches in circumference and five inches long, a noteworthy deviation in size for the Wavid City Banner report.
Alton W. Wilhelms of Polk becomes owner of The Polk Progress. Wilhelms, a World War II veteran, has served as athletic coach in Polk schools for several years.
Bert Nicols of Chicago visited Stromsburg on Sunday calling on old time friends. A former resident, he once lived here with his father who ran the Furniture and Undertaking business, marking his first Stromsburg trip in over fifty years.

General Henninger clarifies that local draft boards hold no authority over reservists. Reservists are ordered to active duty by the armed forces division they belong to, not by draft boards.
Mrs. Roselle Ellis returned from a California trip staying with Dr. and Mrs. D T Kelley in San Diego. The Kelleys moved to a new house in San Diego Naval Hospital where Dr Kelley leads an operation section with eight to twelve daily operations most days.
Osceola cafe changes hands with Mr. and Mrs. Lee Rein taking over next week. Mrs. Rein works at Whale Cafe in St. Paul Nebraska and is sister to current operator Jimmy Krance who plans to leave for the west coast soon. Lorraine Rein, 20, will assist. Krance family will stay in Osceola with the home south of town.
Dr M D Strong eyed irrigation of about 40 acres on the Blue River farm worked by Erickson Brothers. A survey and plan by the U S Soil Conservation Service found 30 acres easily irrigable and seven more with precautions. District equipment built elevated ditches and leveled land for efficient irrigation. Meeting Oct 3 adopted drainage resolutions for Polk County and approved purchasing a landplane for cooperators.
Polk County hosts a CROP rally on October 16 at 8 p m in Stromsburg Grade School. Community groups invite church, farm and civic leaders to plan a county wide drive for aid to refugees, orphans and hungry worldwide. A film Address Unknown will be shown.
About 24 friends neighbors and relatives gathered at the R H Waite home last Friday October 6 to honor them on their Golden Wedding Anniversary A lunch was served and many gifts and cards were received by Mr and Mrs Waite. Mr and Mrs Homer Branting Mrs Thor Mattson Karen and Luther of Grand Island and Mr and Mrs O F Branting were Sunday guests of Mr and Mrs Raymond Branting and daughters.
Osceola earned its second win in four starts by narrowing past Shelton 19 to 7 at Shelton field. The Bulls must show more offense against Polk in a Goldenrod Conference test as Polk seeks to extend their unblemished record and conference lead. Holmes Back, Holmes Back was named back of the week for consistent scoring.
Dale F. Ernst, 27, of Shelby died from a brain concussion after a two-vehicle collision seven miles north of Shelby on old Highway 81. Walter E. Miller, 40, also from Shelby, survived with minor injuries. Funeral services were held in Columbus with burial at Roselawn cemetery.
Miss Signe Larson of Lindsborg Kansas and her sister will present an artistic service at St. Paul Lutheran Church on Thursday October 19 at eight pm. Despite deaf mute status she creates eloquent art with brush and chalk and is known for the altar painting Thy Kingdom Come at Salem Lutheran Stromsburg. The visit is sponsored by the Lutheran Ladies Aid and an invitation is issued to all interested to attend with a silver offering.
The Osceola Chamber of Commerce baseball committee led by D. W. Bush announced the clubs operating cost for the playing year. Total receipts were 542.82 with expenses at 378.55 leaving a treasury of 249.78 and a remaining unpaid bill for cleaning suits.
Miss Elizabeth Ann Gable and Rex W. Watts wed on October 5 1950 in Sidney Iowa. The bride is Shelby High School 1948 alumna and the groom a 1945 graduate now farming with his father. They will live with the Watts family for the time being.
Nebraska Selective Service issues an order to register doctors dentists and veterinarians under 50 who completed military training or deferred WWII service for education. Criteria include prior training program participation and specific active duty thresholds. Check with local draft board for clarification.
The Camp Fire Girls and Blue Birds host a bake sale on Saturday October 14 at Osceola Plumbing and Heating to fund the launch of a new Blue Bird group.
At St. Francis Hospital in Osceola a son Dennis Charles was born to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Fischer on Sunday October 8. A son Raymond Glenn was born to Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Kresha on October 9.
