Paul Monson of Osceola area leads a cooperative straw silo test in Polk County as part of the pasture-forage livestock program. The 15 foot diameter, 12 bale high silo holds about 75 tons of silage, bound by wire. cost around 20 dollars.
Herman Ayes of Nance county won the first official Nebraska sorghum topping contest held near York with 4 88 bushels of grain topped using a discarded buteher shop knife. Richard Bangert of Webster county finished second among twelve county champions as 4000 to 5000 spectators watched on. The event, part of the Pasture Forage Livestock program, drew crowds to the G H Finney farm as Extension Service exhibits drew long inquiries on production and use of grain and forage sorghums.
Kellar 71 died Friday at Osceola hospital after a Thursday stroke. Born in Platte County he lived most of his life in Polk County. Survivors include two sisters Mrs J H Tschauner of this city and Mrs Gertrude Avery of Palmer Nebraska. Funeral services were Sunday at Kepner Funeral Home with burial in Columbus Cemetery.
Dr C R Collins departs with his wife for Dixon Illinois where he will resume veterinary practice. He built a large local practice over ten years and contributed to civic affairs. well wishes accompany their move from the community.
Church services are listed for Sunday October 15 with morning worship at 11:00 led by Pastor Albert W. Lapthorne and sermon titled A Vital Religion. Morning church school at 10:00 and evening Junior League at 6:30 followed by a 7:30 Senior Meeting of the Ladies Aid Society.
Osceola businessmen urge a group to meet at the west side of the square shortly before 2 o'clock to travel in a body to Shelby for a highly anticipated Friday basketball game. Osceola Community Club led by Sam T. Crouse promotes strong local support.
Sheriff Peterson sold nine Osceola parcels at tax foreclosure, including five residences. Delinquent taxes on the tracts totaled 3706.76 with bids 121.06 above suit costs, and all 1937 and prior taxes are remitted. New owners must pay 1938 and future taxes to obtain title.
Local families and relatives share Sunday dinners and visits across Central City Stromsburg Madison Grand Island Bradshaw Benedict Lincoln and York. Notable attendees include the Ericsons Johnsons Shostroms Crow Crow and many others as weekend hospitality and extended family ties are highlighted.
Clarence Reitz and his mother visited George Reed and Dean McCormick homes at week’s start. Several families from Woodriver Central City and Silver Creek traveled to area homes. California and Colorado links note travel. Local gatherings included a Stoner Club meeting, birthday celebrations for Arneta, and dinners with relatives from Omaha Osceola York Gresham Bradshaw and Shelby.
An October wedding at St. Joseph’s church united Deloras Beecock and Carl Benda while Mary Dietrich married Raymond Benda. Attendants included Eileen Branigan and Adriana Micek. Dinners, dances, and family visits followed at nearby homes and Eller's Hall. District 18’s sports win, birthdays, illness updates, and school enrollments are also noted.
Emma Raabe and daughter Esther left for Stanton after visiting Mrs. L. V. Sharp and family. H B Branting and Dee Ann returned from Axtell where they stayed two weeks with Mrs. S A Exstrom. Chas S A Johnson and Ethus Swanson visited Martha and Lillie Hubbert. Christensen drove to Wahoo. son Richard returns home to recover from a two week old auto accident injury. Benny Cook of Spencer spent the weekend with Mrs. W A Atkinson and Mr. Atkinson. John I Anderson of Osceola dined with Mr. and Mrs. A Noreen. Senator and Mrs. Schultz of Elgin stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Jess Frisbie. Lincoln visitors for the Nebraska Minnesota game included A V Ejelson, Lee, Jack Christiansen, Wesley Ericson and family, Arthur Nelson, J H Toelle, and Wallace Scott.
Mr and Mrs Nick Gerdes plan to move this week into the Anderson property one block east of the square. Mr and Mrs L E Wilson and Kent traveled to Omaha on business Saturday. Mrs I J Merrick broke a wrist in a fall at home Tuesday morning and was treated at the hospital before being released Wednesday. Mrs F P Shermadine celebrated her birthday with a surprise party at home on Wednesday evening. For sale choice potatoes for storage by Monson Scott of Gibbon Nebraska.
The State Journal notes Cornhusker Bill Herrmann, an Osceola Nebraska native born April 12 1913, as a top Husker defender. He missed spring drills with shoulder and collarbone injuries and struggles to return this fall while Line Coach Link Ly man praises his defensive play. Herrmann is a senior and former letter winner who starred in football at Osceola high school.
Liberty Local No. 573 F E C U will meet Friday evening at the Chapel. Victor Womens Extension Club will meet next Tuesday at the home of Mrs. Horace McKeag. Stoner Club will meet with Mrs. August W. Johnson on the Big 4 farm next Wednesday. The Jolly Workers Extension Club has been postponed until October 24th when it will meet at the home of Mrs. Clyde Austin.
Word was received Monday of Rolland Fredrickson death at a Lincoln hospital from pneumonia. He was the son of Mr and Mrs John Fredrickson of Lincoln, formerly of this community. Funeral set for Thursday at 2:00 PM at Swede Home church.
Wesley Chapel Church Aid will meet Friday evening at the church for a pound social to welcome the new pastor. Attendees are asked to bring pie and sandwiches. The Womens Foreign Missionary Society plans a Thursday afternoon gathering at the church with cake and sandwiches.

Polk County 4-H Club committee chose county champions across home economics cooking meat and swine projects. Winners include Genevieve Schott Osceola four leaf Clover Club state award, Mary Beth Schnasse Osceola Happy Homemakers Club, Raymond Schott Osceola Stull Corner Club, Arlois Island Shelby Doane College finalists, and Bob Ingalls Shelby meat champion with gold watch. Two Nebraskans will attend National Club Camp in Washington D C.
Osceola scored 34 points to Polk's none last Friday as 35 Bulldogs played a steady win. Mentink Mickey and L Gissler led scoring while Mills Burritt Danskin and Ogden anchored the line. Osceola heads to Shelby next Friday to face an undefeated eleven.
Lutheran Church notes invite members to a 7 30 pm weiner roast in the city park with each group bringing buns and weiners. Sunday schedule lists Sunday School 10 morning worship 11 and evening worship 7 30 with Bible themed study on Hebrews. Pastor John Oberg signs.
