Harvest of Harmony honors OHS marching band and rivals

Rex Cadwallader directs the OHS Marching Band to a superior field marching rating at Harvest of Harmony. Osceola loses a street marching trophy by a narrow margin to Henderson. Students enjoyed an Omaha Playhouse production of Oliver arranged by OHS English instructor Larry Theis.

Union Pacific Scholars Awarded 19200 to 48 UNL Freshmen

Union Pacific Railroad honors its 50th anniversary scholarship drive by presenting 48 UNL freshmen with 400 checks totaling 19200 at a campus dinner. Bruce A. Treffer of Osceola among recipients. gifts and plaques accompany the awards as Union Pacific Quartet entertained.

Polk County ASCS seeks nominations for community committees

County Executive Director Eugene V. Sterup urges Polk County farmers to nominate candidates by petition. Petitions require three signatures and must be returned to the Osceola ASCS office by Oct 27 1971. If fewer than six candidates surface, existing committeemen will fill the ballot.

Osceola School Board approves sewing machines purchase

The Osceola School Board met Monday October 11 approving two new sewing machines for the home economics department and a professional teaching certificate for Miss Eileen Blitzkie. The board discussed a one way street near the high school and heard a proposal for junior high football next year with parent input sought. Action on printing The Mike newspaper professionally was tabled for cost details. Bids for the Elementary Building addition will be opened October 14 at 2 p.m. at City Hall.

Achievement Day Council Officers Honored in Shelby Luncheon

Polk County Extension Club toasted 1971 72 presidents and past county chairmen at the Achievement Day luncheon in the Shelby Legion Club. New council chairman Mrs Marvin Ericson announced after dinner as 110 attendees heard from Ethel Diedricksen on foods trends and viewed seven lessons and a seasonal crafts display.

Fire damages Kops home on Ridge Street Osceola

Osceola firefighters aided by two calls Sunday October 10 battled a house fire on Ridge Street attributed to a faulty chimney. The blaze burned in the walls hampering saving efforts. A second call involved a belt and mile stubble fire at the Otto Daum farm northwest of Osceola. Connie Stromberg begins practice teaching at Pawnee City with return to university in December.

Huskies crush Bulldogs 46-0 in Henderson rout

Henderson Husky backs led by Galen Epp sped past OHS in a lopsided 46-0 victory. Epp caught three TD passes for 97 yards and ran 80 yards, while Ross Friesen faked effectively and mixed plays as OHS struggled with injuries and turnovers.
