Members of the Polk County Fair Association met at the Osceola courthouse last Wednesday afternoon. S. J. Harless Harold Schultz and August Senn were elected to the board to succeed themselves. Officials expect funds to cover premiums after year start, delayed by slow tax revenue. About $200 was received this week as the association share of Ak-Sar-Ben. A proposal to operate a free fair was discussed, pending crop prospects.
Mary Motell Chauner born March 21 1862 in Pennsylvania moved to Keokuk Iowa then Osceola Nebraska. She married Frank Chauner March 4 1885 and had five children and five grandchildren. She joined the Methodist Church in 1899 and was active in church work until health declined. Funeral Monday November 21 officiated by Rev Albert Monkman and Rev Homer Hix. interment Osceola cemetery.
Willard Salsbury of Ulysses is improving satisfactorily and expects release the latter part of the week. Mrs. Mark Gustafson underwent an appendectomy last Thursday. Tom Rutter, who had surgery last week, returned home Tuesday. Earl Watts was treated for a facial infection last Thursday and Friday. Mrs. Harlan Carlson was a patient at the hospital last week.
Osceola students under Supt Wilson formed a 16 member beginner band in February. Three weekly practices focus on rudiments with plans to add sixteen more learners and offer free instruction to any department or high school student.
George Buchta spent several days at Lake Erick with family. Mrs. Lester Anderson remains ill under doctor care. Alvin Reed sought employment in Fremont. Mrs. Dan Hayes attended an old friend's party in Grand Island. Harvey McCormick and family visited Palmer over the weekend. Mrs. Louis Jennings and her son returned to Laramie Wyoming after two weeks with grandparents in town. C J Layton and L R Meacham families enjoyed an oyster supper with the Meachams. Riverside Club met at Community Hall with many ladies attending. E Daniel and his mother left for Colorado Springs for a visit and winter arrangements. Heinemeyer and Dake families spent Sunday in York with D L Heinemeyer.
Next Thursday at 7 30 p m the church holds a Thanksgiving service. Next Sunday marks Advent and the Church Year with Sun day School at 10 and Morning Worship at 11. The King's Coming is the sermon theme. An evening Women s Missionary Society worship, chair practice Tuesday, Ladies Aid December 1 program, Harmony Society moves to December 2, and a Swedish supper on December 8 invite all parishioners.
Frank Davis Hendrickson born February 3 1887 in Perkins County near Venango Nebraska died November 21 1938 in Osceola hospital at age 51 9 18. He lived in Butler and Polk counties most of his life married Laura L Timm on October 15 1914 in Osceola Nebraska and had two sons one died in infancy Glen survives with his mother. Surviving relatives include his father G Hendrickson Osceola two sisters Lulu Hendrickson Osceola and Mrs Ralph Mershheim Potter and brother Mark Silver Creek. Funeral services were held November 23 at the Osceola Methodist Church with Rev Albert Monkman. Interment followed.
A large group of 51 men and 21 teams gathered at A. O. Whittemore’s on Friday morning to husk and crib 80 acres of corn for Mr. Whittemore who injured his wrist. Women brought eats and helped. they served dinner at noon and lunch after completion revealing strong neighborly spirit. Flu cases noted in the area.

Shelby residents hosted relatives and friends from Fullerton Central City St Edwards Bellwood Marysville and Omaha over the weekend including the Clauss Butts Watkins Merrick and Barker families. Mrs Miller heads to Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota for medical care while others visit relatives and attend local church and social events.
The Ladies Aid of Greens Chapel meets next Tuesday afternoon. The Father & Son banquet is set for Friday evening December 2 at the church with tickets 4 and 6 for one or two at 75 cents. Numerous locals from Knoxville York Stromsburg and Lincoln visit or are cared for in area hospitals.

Eugene White visits his family then heads to Colorado to see his daughter. The community notes visitors from Stromsburg York and Osceola while Earl Watts recovers from surgery. A death rings sad in the neighborhood as Frank Hendrickson passes away.
Genoa undefeated 11 edged Osceola 13 to 0 on Genoa field last Friday. Osceola mounted strong fight as Genoa players were briefly sidelined by hard blocks and tackles. Five seniors Alton Bond Sidney Rutter Eugene Carman Dick Anderson and Don Schmaker played their final game for the Black and Orange. The Bulldogs finished the season with 500 wins.
Fourth grade pupils have read 150 books since school began, with a reading list kept. Miss Hanson aims to foster a habit of reading good books as students discover books are like ships carrying them to far away lands. Book Week featured each student reading a book in Reading Class and Rev. Monkman spoke about Robert Louis Stevenson and read poems.
The Polk County Farm Bureau held its annual meeting at the Rapp Hotel on Friday November 18. State agriculture official Mr Klatt presented a colored film strip on the Scottsbluff bindweed district and other Scottsbluff area topics. Board members were elected for Hackberry Clear Creek and Stromsburg precincts Dwight Newcomer Fred Cockson and Mrs Lloyd Hahn.
Ivan Tracy of York County uses cornstalks as a snow fence to catch moisture for a windbreak of young trees in Polk County. A wall of stalks, several feet north of the saplings, is backed by a standard fence separating the windbreak from the adjacent field.
R. E. A. notes a Polk County Rural Public Power district sponsored touring exhibit will tour Eller's Hall on Monday December 5 1938. W. E. White of the Nebraska State College Extension Service will provide a running commentary on machinery operation while demonstrations cover corn grinding oats and hay chopper. Louisan Mamer REA will show kitchen electrical use and appliances. Afternoon shows include ensilage cutting hay chopping stock tank heater pig brooder and motor t o t o r cart. The program features dairy poultry lighting and a costs discussion with a lunch stand and all day educational program inviting farm families.
Mrs Kenneth Smith traveled to Hastings on Tuesday to attend the funeral of her aunt Mrs Ann Neserall.
