Polk County Students at Nebraska State University
Twenty nine Polk county youths join six thousand eight hundred ten total students at the University of Nebraska this semester. Stromsburg leads with thirteen students followed by Osceola eight Shelby seven and Polk one. Notable Stromsburg students include Norma E. Johnson and Margaret Olson in the teachers college and Russell A. Elfors Paul M. Lindstedt and Richard O. Freeman in engineering and arts and sciences. Additional Stromsburg entrants study agricultural and business administration programs while Osceola Shelby and Polk representatives pursue nursing medicine ROTC and pre-law. Nebraska welcomes students from all Cornhusker state counties, other states, and international locales as the university reports a third straight all time enrollment high.

Candlelight Service at Swede Home Church

The 1938 Osceola football team posted the best record in nine seasons led by seniors Alton Bond Sidney Rutter Donald Schmoker Richard Anderson and captain Bud Carman who was named honorary captain by teammates.

Palmer Herrmanns wed in Webster Groves garden ceremony
Mr and Mrs Alfred Palmer of Ulysses announce the marriage of their daughter Jeanne Marjorie to Victor A Herrmann son of Mr and Mrs A J Herrmann of Osceola. The July 27 1938 ceremony was in the Grable garden in Webster Groves Missouri. Reverend George E Whitten officiated and Monte Jacoby carried the ring. Attending were Mrs Jacoby sister of the groom and Kathryn F Wynn who hosted a reception. Both couple graduates of the University of Nebraska with Mrs Herrmann active in Phi Mu Mor tar Board and W A A president. Mr Herrmann in his third year at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine and a member of Kap pa Sigma and Phi Rho Sigma.

High School Dance At Legion Hall Draws Large Turnout
The second school dance of the season was held at the Legion Hall last Friday evening with about 60 students and alumni in attendance. The event ran from 8:00 to 11:00 and pleased attendees. Mrs. Merrick sponsored. guests included the Hastings and Merrick families and others. Another dance is planned before Christmas vacation.

Pasture Forage Livestock program honors in Nebraska
The 1938 Pasture Forage Livestock program in Nebraska closed in Omaha with three farmers earning outstanding recognition and 25 receiving honorable mention for progressive farming. Delegates from Polk County included Homer Brigham Elmer Tooker Frank Bard Edwin Hedlund Harry Youngland Rolland Swanson Raymond Rystrom E J Anderson Dwight Newcomer Arthur Deeter George Anderson Herman Jones Lloyd Treadway Elton Berck and Howard Peterson. The event promoted diversified farming focusing on grazing land and livestock with insurance crops. George Anderson Stromsburg was among the honorable mentions for contoured farming and certified seed efforts.

Electric operation of feed mills shelters elevators pumps and other farm equipment will be shown in practice at the REA show in Polk County. A motor-totor designed by D W Teare of REA moves a 10 horsepower motor easily across the farm. Bill Herrmann Plays Through Shoulder Break Against Kansas State
Nebraska junior guard Bill Herrmann from Osceola suffered a dislocated shoulder early in the Kansas State game. He kept quiet, played through several more plays before requesting a timeout. Examination later revealed a shoulder separation. He returned to campus with his arm in a sling and said the shoulder is improving.

John Peter Allinder obituary from Stromsburg records
John Peter Allinder born March 12 1865 in Sweden immigrated to Polk County in 1881 and died November 25 1938 at age 73. He leaves five children and five grandchildren, was a 40 year member of the Evangelical Covenant church and is interred in Stromsburg Cemetery with services held at the home and Covenant church.

Ernst Ferdinand Bahr born August 15 1869 in Blumenfield Germany died November 26 1938 at Shelby Nebraska aged 69 3 11. He migrated to America in 1886 and married Bertha Krueger in 1895. Four children survive him Paul F Nielson Emma August William plus three grandchildren and three brothers. He farmed near Rising City and then Shelby renting Watke farm for 36 years. Funeral in Shelby Church of the United Brethren with Masonic rites at the grave and interment in Shelby Cemetery.
