The University of Nebraska Lincoln reports drought conditions stem from timing of rainfall. Through October 1975 statewide precipitation was 83 percent of normal, with regional variation. After June showers, July brought below normal rain nationwide, triggering a moisture shortage that worsened in August despite earlier good yields.

Murray Jones Wins Armchair Quarterback Title
Judges chose Murray Jones of Osceola as the top predictor in last week's Armchair Quarterback contest after his Nebraska 38 Iowa 7 prediction came closest to the 52 0 actual score. The next to last week of the 1975 contest offers a $5 gift certificate prize, with only $10 remaining. Last week’s scores include New Mexico 38 Wyoming 32 and Stanford 33 Oregon 30. September and October were very dry statewide, with north central and southwest divisions hit hardest and August through October the driest period in 45 years.

Two Polk County Accidents Reported Saturday Morning
Polk County Sheriff investigated two early Friday incidents. Steven Tenniges of Osceola struck a deer on Highway 69 south of Shelby with a pickup suffering minor grill damage and no injuries. Gary Boruch of Osceola ran his car into a ditch and field on a dead end road two miles east and ten miles north of Osceola with about $2000 damage and no injuries.

Girl Scout Awards Brighten Ceremony at Methodist Church
The annual Awards and Candle Lighting Service for Girl Scouts was held Monday evening November 17 at the Methodist Church. Brownie Troop 138 guests, with Junior Cadette and Senior troops, and several girls bridging from Juniors to Cadettes were recognized. Cengas to Raise Nebras ka Rates December 27
Natural gas rates will increase for 37 Cengas served Nebraska communities including Osceola and Shelby starting December 27. The rise is about 40 cents monthly for the average residential heating customer. Northern Natural filed evidence with the FPC to recover higher field costs. A separate rate case from October 27, 1974, awaits final action. The next initial hearing is February 3.

Five members of the J F Kennedy Council 5383 from Shelby and Osceola attended the State Exemplification Degree in York Nebraska on November 16 at the City Auditorium hosted by Knights of Columbus Council York. Thirty five new members were initiated with councils from York Hastings Grand Island and Hebron participating. A banquet and dance followed the ceremonies for new members and staff.
