Youth Center Drive Shows Teen Maturity and Initiative

Our teenagers push a community youth center using discussion and agreement followed by action. Nearly 100 youths and adults met to organize a Teen Center Drive with ground rules for membership financing and governance. They seek a building location and outside support while keeping adult intervention away.

Forty seven cagers report for opening of basketball practice

Osceola High School lists 47 players reporting for the 1969-70 season under Coach Don Bartek. Nine are returning lettermen, with 16 freshmen, nine sophomores, 12 juniors and 10 seniors. The first game is Friday December 5 at home against Lakeview, a newly formed Class C consolidated school north of Columbus.

Osceola Prepares for Square Christmas Decorations

Osceola volunteers urged by Chairman Bill Zedicher to report to The Square Saturday morning to install Christmas decor. Osceola Fire Department answered three calls over the weekend including a picket-shelter fire on the Rags Carlson farm and weed fires at Lee Craiger and Jack Wieseman farms. Osceola schools and local businesses will close for Thanksgiving on Thursday and Friday, with a call to shop early and locally for the holiday weekend.

Assistant director of Samaritan Center dies at 65

James Turner of Osceola died Saturday at his home from an apparent heart attack. He had lived in Osceola four years and helped his wife, the center's director. Funeral services were held Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Osceola with burial at Osceola cemetery. A memorial service is planned for Wednesday at Plainfield Methodist Church in Plainfield, Iowa.

Group Seals Drive Aids Polk County Tuberculosis Fight

Members and volunteers of the Polk County Tuberculosis and Respiratory Disease Committee prepared 2 000 appeal letters and Christmas Seals at the Richard Howe home for Polk County families. Participants included Richard Howe family Mrs Thelma Conkling and Mrs Mauritz Swanson and the Osceola Girl Scouts. Mrs Howe chaired the group with Mrs Conkling as county representative and Mrs Swanson as co chair.

Youth Center Organizing Meeting Draws Osceola Teens

Nearly one hundred high school students parents and townspeople packed a Town Hall session for the Osceola youth center Rex Cadwalder led the discussion outlining goals a well located building parking and supervision A 16 member student committee elected four reps per class will select a building and report back at future Town Hall meetings also noting visitors moving into a Shelby mobile home and Iowa guests visiting before traveling to California.

Bulldogs earn conference runners-up and all conference picks

The ninth rated Bulldogs finished 7 0 2 and claimed second in the conference standings last week. Five players were named to all conference squads: Marvin Simonsen Leo Potter Evan Wieseman to the offensive unit and Lynn Boden Dick Wyman and Evan to the defensive unit.

Fischer Honored at Farewell Party at Ryan Hill Club

Charles Fischer was honored at a farewell party on Thursday evening November 13 at Ryan Hill Country Club. W H Norton served as emcee and presented a loving cup and gift. Raymond Kepner awarded 1969 handicaps trophies to Mike Jones and Lowell Hanson. Alex Mills gave medal trophies to Burdette Flodman and Dean Henricksen. About 50 members attended the dinner and social hour. Fischer and family moved to Fort Collins Colorado.

New policy enables parent teacher conferences at Osceola school

The Osceola Board of Education and faculty approve a Wednesday conference day on December 3. Students not in school that day. Conferences inform parents about individual pupil progress with report cards handed to parents. Junior high and high school parents go to the high school first, then elementary. A schedule will be issued with times, and each conference lasts up to ten minutes.

Yam shaped like a duck found in harvest field

Tilman Joy and his wife Ber unearthed a sweet potato from their yam patch that resembled a duckling. The owner joked it would need a pond to paddle on as the oddity of nature amused the couple.

Nebraska senior wins Ceres Club scholarship 1969 70

Miss Margaret J. Peterson of Osceola is awarded the Ceres Club $100 scholarship for 1969 70. She is a University of Nebraska senior in the College of Agriculture and Home Economics majoring in dietetics. She works in the Food and Nutrition lab, and serves as president of Fedde Hall while active in Lutheran Student Chapel. She previously earned the Midland Lutheran College Presidential Scholarship and NU Upperclass Regents Scholarship as a freshman. She is a Phi Upsilon Omicron member and vice president of Omicron Nu, with the Ceres Club serving faculty wives and women faculty of NU COAHE.
