Willard O. Kumpf, 24, Shelby native, graduated Shelby High School 1937 and University of Nebraska 1941 with a commission as second lieutenant in Field Artillery. Ordered to active duty June 14, 1941, he served at southern camps, was seriously injured in a tank accident in September, discharged from hospital in April, reported to Ft. Knox, promoted to first lieutenant in March 1943 and captain on June 4, second youngest captain at the Armored Force Replacement Center.

Marlin G. Kumpf, 22, Shelby High School class of 1939, joined the U S Army August 7, 1942. After basic at Camp Crowder he sailed to North Africa March 20 and served as a truck driver hauling men, mines, and ammunition. He earned campaign and good conduct bars, spent six months on detached service, and is now in Italy.
