The Osceola Record announces soldier albums featuring over 200 Polk County boys will be ready for distribution on and after Thursday, November 11. Price is 50 cents for pickup, 75 cents for mail. 10 cents extra for Kraft envelopes. Office extends hours Saturday until 9 pm for purchases.
Inclement weather forces Polk County Scrap Drive to be postponed to Tuesday November 16. Organizers urge residents to save items and await new collection date.
Lanky Bert Gissler, once Osceola flash, helped Nebraska defeat Kansas State 13 to 7 by catching a 51 yard pass from Ted Renfield and sprinting for the first touchdown. The score came early in the first period.
Polk County registered its first winter spell as a light rain on Saturday night turned to a Sunday snowstorm with temperatures about 20 degrees below normal. Slippery roads delayed travel and stranded about 30 trucks and a dozen cars at Bernt's Station in Shelby Sunday night.
In the past week the county court handled traffic cases. Oscar Bredthauer of Grand Island was fined 25 dollars and costs for passing a bill. Delbert W. Fox of Grand Island was fined 25 dollars and costs for failure to display flags. Sam R. Marts of Romans Transfer in Loup City was fined 35 dollars and costs for hauling 13000 pounds on a ton tag. All complaints were filed by State Patrolman John T. Meisirell.
State sheriff warns high school superintendents not to store cash or valuables on campus after five break-ins in two weeks totaling about 3800 dollars. Safes were forced open and Columbus High School was hit November 1.
District No. 18 notes a daughter born November 3 to Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Anderson of Cheyenne Wyoming. Lloyd Anderson is the Hasselbalch sister’s brother. Orville Enyeart and Earl drove to York for business Saturday. Carl Benda and Caroline visited John Micek Friday evening. Chauncey Lusche and family visited east of Columbus Sunday. Mrs. Edward Lisko visited Mrs. Peter Seberger in Shelby Saturday. Alfred Bernt and family visited Shelby Saturday with Bertha Bernt.
The Greens Chapel Jolly Workers Club plans a gathering next Wednesday November 17 with Mrs Walter Twarling. Entertaining guests will be Mesdames Alvin Burke and Clyde Austin. The item notes various local visits and several soldiers and residents departing or relocating for assignments or training.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bolton visited Stromsburg with the Rhodes family. Clair Willits hosted a gathering for Louis Willits and son from Buffalo New York. Lyle V Johnston, recently discharged at Yuma, returned home. Alvin Weeden of Hastings visited E. H. Moberg and Mrs. Harry Pierson. Wayne Stever neared England with the U S Army while LeRoy James also serves in England. Robert Ready and wife came from San Pedro California to visit Ira Ready and A. T. Ready then headed to Polk. Mrs Gordon Smith traveled from Belleville to visit Mil tion H. Anderson and Clarence Burgeson. Her husband is in the army, now transferred to Florida. Mrs V Nelson of Waynesburg Pa left for Fort Collins Colorado after two weeks with relatives. W J Butler stayed with family in Beatrice. son Bill Jr, in the army at Camp Fannin Texas, was on furlough.

Robt Moore arrived here last week to visit his mother Edith Richards. He left the United States a year ago and served in the Aleutians and the South Pacific, earning three service ribbons for his actions in combat.
The Polk County Local Selective Service Board today announced registrants accepted for service and to begin training. Navy names include Orin Lee Rader Stromsburg Richard Robert Matheson Osceola Oscar Peterson Jr Stromsburg. Army names are Lawrence H Hoffer Stromsburg Ronald D Beebe Shelby William Basil Wyman Silver Creek Wendell K McCormick Silver Rolland Ray Abbott Shelby. Marine Corps is Theodore Mark Alfred Polk.
Keith M. Youngstrom son of Mr and Mrs Chas Youngstrom is 19 and a Private in the U S Army. A Osceola High School graduate he entered service in 1943 and is stationed at Camp Marshall North Carolina.
Mrs Leonard Hanson and Mrs George T Locke hosted the Osceola Project Club at her home on Tuesday afternoon in November. Mrs Ben Zedicher and Mrs Ray Cruise led a talk on Your War Services on the Health Front stressing proper food rest and recreation. The group discussed community health, homemaker responsibilities, and how to keep families healthy and happy as part of a six session series Increase Strength For Victory Morale in the Home will be addressed at the next meeting.
A report from 86 Polk County women in the 1943 home demonstration project shows 11 234 quarts of vegetables and 8 413 quarts of fruit preserved since April. They canned 831 quarts of meat, 1 973 jars of jellies and jams, and stored 21 080 tablespoons of meat by freezing and curing. Forty seven families used pressure cookers. many borrowed or bought cookers, with 25 to 50 percent more food produced and canned this year.
A. E. Sargent purchased the W. H. Kelley property one block west of Main Street for 2000 dollars at a closing held in Shelby last week. The item notes several Shelby residents traveling, visiting relatives, and local paint work on the Shelby Hatchery building.

Mr and Mrs Horace McKeag hosted a bridge party at the Harvey McKeag home in honor of Wallace McKeag of Massachusetts on furlough. John Hiemer and relatives visited at the Carl Will and Anton Hiemer homes. A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs William Markhover of Columbus at Lutheran hospital. Mars Markhover is a sister of Mrs Herman Thelen. A grandson was born to Mr and Mrs Bob Davis at Stromburg hospital. Mrs E J Krumbach won a high prize at the Shelby Guild meeting. Mrs Edwin Buse helped hostesses. George Lux and family moved into the former Oswald Alt farm house.
Parents and wives urged to attend a Get-Together at the American Legion Hall on Thursday November 11 at 8 00 p m. Entertainment for all promised. Servicemen on furlough and those discharged are urged to attend and meet friends.
Carleton Anderson announces a state patrol driver license renewal event in Osceola. The sessions run November 18 and December 9, from 8:30 to 11:30 A M. Morning-only, all drivers urged to renew their licenses promptly.
