Ralph D. Jones of Polk County serves in the U S Army. He entered service in March 1943 and is stationed at Astoria Oregon. He is 20, a 1940 graduate of Osceola High School, son of Edwin Jones.
Service albums featuring more than 200 Polk County boys in the armed forces are selling rapidly at this office. More than half have already sold and the remainder may sell out soon. Orders are being held for those who ordered in advance, but that reserve will not last. Buyers are sending copies to soldiers in camp or overseas.
The Board of Directors met Friday and reelected August Tenn as president. Wm Bachman remains vice president Louis Hastert continues as secretary and I D Huston as treasurer. Hastert has 19 years on the board and 10 as president, now starting his fifth year as secretary. Huston has served seven years as treasurer, Tenn three as president.
Jack From, son of Mrs. Ben Schmoker, traveled to Omaha and then Farragut Idaho for preliminary naval training. James Treadway left for Fort Leavenworth Kansas. William Brandt Jr. recuperates from pneumonia at his daughter’s home in Columbus. Ross Richards drove Robert Moore to Columbus for his naval duty training in San Francisco. Dolly Lockard Boss Ringer and Glenn Chase with John Lockard family visited Lincoln area. Chase on furlough from California duties. A letter from Staff Sergeant Lawrence P. Davis says he has been in Italy since Sept. 18 as Allies advance amid German resistance.
Fairview and Valley Methodist Churches invite the community to a Friday evening gathering at the Valley Church. Services Sunday include 10:00 preaching at Fairview and 11:20 at Valley, with Sunday School at Valley 10:00 and Fairview 11:00.
Mrs and Mrs A Noreen entertain at dinner with Rev Edick Anderson of Polk Mr and Mrs Victor Anderson and daughter Emma and Mrs G Dahlstedt of Osceola. Mervin Rystrom promoted to Sergeant transferred to Seattle Washington from Oklahoma City for propeller work. Pfc Philip H Nyberg writes from Australia. Orin L Bader sent to Camp Bennion Farragut Idaho for Navy basic training. Seaman Donald Bennett visits from Tinker Field Oklahoma. Sunday supper hosted by Mr and Mrs Elmer Fusby includes Alvin Kenneth Reed Los Angeles CA S Reed Lincoln Mr and Mrs Russell Krebs and sons and Mr and Mrs Wilbur Nantkes York Mr and Mrs Harland Fusby Rex and Mrs Dora Burgeson Central City celebrate Harland and Rex birthdays. MTS Richard K Nelson left Omaha to fly to Camp El Toro California after month with parents R E Nelson following South Pacific action. Mr and Mrs Wren Sherwood visit Mrs Minnie Swanson Osceola. Mrs Oscar Stromberg Polk spends time with her mother Emma M Peterson.
Mr and Mrs O F Kumpf left Columbus by train for Van Nuys California to visit Mrs Kumpfs sister and husband for three weeks. A farewell party for Jack From was held at Fritz Johansen home with twenty guests. Fred Albers Sr is ill and staying with his son John in west Shelby. Mrs Louis Bernt visits her son Edmund Bernt north of Shelby. Tom Skidmore bought Henry Morriss west Shelby residence, replacing Mr and Mrs D H Bull who moved to Chas Lux home. Cpl Melvin Wieseman visits from Donnellon Air Base Florida during furlough. The Kelleys move to George Ballenger residence. Abbott to the vacated home. W F Crozier returns after taking wife to Excelsior Springs for a month at Ball Clinic. August Thelen buys Dr Norden residence west Shelby for 1800 dollars and plans December move after a farm sale southwest of Shelby.
The Greens Chapel Ladies Aid will hold their annual bazaar and chicken supper on Friday evening December 3 in the church community rooms. Numerous local residents and families are noted in the surrounding notices with travels, visits, and military connections.
John M. Herrmann presides at 10:00 Church School followed by an 11:00 Worship Service. All attendees are invited to stay for a pot luck lunch with basket lunches encouraged. A social time precedes discussion of upcoming church work and plans. Visitors welcome.
Osceola residents hosted Sunday afternoon ILlers at the Kahler home. Clarence Bolton, Pvt. Co C 878 Tank Bn, transferred from Ft. Knox to Camp Chaffee. Local visitors included Ray Johnson and Ralphie Kahler at Adolph Forss home near Polk. Mrs J O Swanson hosted dinner for Mrs. Martin Appleton’s family in honor of Pfc Wendell Appleton of Camp Mackall. High Prairie Thanksgiving Play was held at the schoolhouse and Wendell Appleton returned home on furlough from Camp Mackall.

Polk gathered relatives and friends for an oyster supper in honor of Mrs. Kahler's birthday. Attendees included Ralph Kahler and family, Roy Glasser, Esther McNeely, Lloyd Van Housen, Rosemary Kahler, and others from Clarks and vicinity. Further visits included Chris Regier family, Mrs. Wm Deuker, Martin Baack family, and Osceola visitors Conrad Johnson, Adolph Forss family.
Rev G A Randall will lead Sunday School at 10 and Sunday morning worship at 11. Woman's Society Circles meet Friday November 26 with four groups led by Mrs Chantry Nuquist McFadden Deeds Bert Smith. Senior Youth Fellowship plans a public program at 8 Tuesday November 30 at the church.
A Tuesday long distance call from Pvt Edward Richter in Los Angeles to Mr and Mrs Herman Richter marks family ties. Nearby, several relatives including the Hiemers and Krumbachs gathered at Frank Thelen's home to celebrate an anniversary with cards and refreshments. The August Thelen family plans a Shelby move after a Tuesday sale, and the Thelen farm will house Richard Thelen. Lucille Lux stays with her sister Mrs Bob Davis in Shelby.

Miss Iris Rasp daughter of Mr and Mrs JF L Rasp of Gresham wed Sylvester Dey November 17 at York officiated by Rev G T Lavery. The bride teaches in Osceola Schools and the groom is from Denver with his parents living there. he serves in the army in South Carolina.
A Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue will visit Osceola Court House on December 1, Stromsburg City Hall on December 2, and Polk Bank on December 3 and 4 to assist taxpayers in filing their Declaration of Income Tax Returns for the year ending December 31, 1943. Returns are due by December 15, 1943.
Floyd H. Tonniges, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Tonniges, is 22 and a Shelby high school graduate of 1940. He entered the service in June 1942 and is now a Private stationed at Camp Hood in Texas.
The AAA office force and spouses surprised former Chief Clerk Myron Johnson at his Stromsburg home on a Wednesday evening. Lloyd Hahn won high score, Mrs. Herman Jones took low score, and Myron received a group photo as a keepsake. Lunch followed the social.
Mrs. Mary Benda left for Petersburg to visit sons and families after a time with Josie Benda. Edward Lisko Albert Inselman joined Phil Micek at the Oscar Olson place north of Columbus for business matters. Frank Seberger and family drove to Omaha to visit Mrs Seberger and children. Allen, brother of Mrs Hasselbalch, left for the army from Bellwood. John Stec Leo Monroe and Frank Ziemba Richard near Duncan visited the Micek home. Frances Lassek hosted the Birthday Club. John Micek is homebound with a foot injury from a rusty nail.
The Polk County Dairy Improvement Association will begin operation December 1 with Fred Bond hired to manage the group. Bond brings relevant experience and will train further on artificial breeding methods, with service requests via the County Extension Office in Ocala before 10 A.M. daily. Ray L. Cruise reports 115 farmers with over 850 cows have joined, signaling strong growth and dairy quality potential.
