Merle D Luft has served in the Army since July 25 1942 and is stationed at Fort Riley Kansas as a First Class Cook in the Medical Division. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Adam Luft and a 1939 Osceola High School graduate who worked at the Food Center for two years.

Members of the Home Study Club meet Tuesday November 17 at Mrs. Edwin Euée's home. Leo Richter, in the army at Bowling Green Virginia, visits his parents in town for a few days. Raymond Alt returns from Stromsburg hospital. Birth announced for a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Albert A Gabriel at Shelby hospital. Leonard Hiemer hosts an oyster stew for Leonard's birthday with relatives. Additional Sunday dinner guests include John Gabriel and family, John Hiemer and daughters. Leo Richter, Joe Alt and Emma of Shelby, Phyllis Glatter visit at Leonard Hremer home.
News from Stoner notes the Stoner Club gathering planned for Wednesday November 18 at Sue Cook's home. Sunday visitors include the Grossnicklaus and Albers families in Shelby with Henry Grossnicklaus hosting relatives. Raymond Grossnicklaus returns from San Luis Obispo on a twelve day furlough. Virginia Cook, employed in Columbus, spends Wednesday with her parents Si and Virginia Cook. Archie Marsden and daughter visit Jack Johnston in Shelby Sunday.

Osceola dry cleaners JACKCON offers curtain and drape cleaning at 25 cents per panel with contact via phone 21 for service inquiries.
After canvassing ballots including mail votes the count shows John I Anderson leading Sophia Kresha by one vote. The county board will count soldiers votes Friday. a single additional ballot could tie or swing to Kresha.
The Ladies Aid will meet this Friday with Mrs C W Hennings and Mrs Tracy Nelson as hosts. Several residents and visitors are noted visiting relatives in Omaha Lincoln and Council Bluffs including Mr and Mrs Roy Thomas and Dorothy of Rising City and John Rasp hospitalized in Omaha. Additional social visits include extended family from Benedict York and Lincoln with trips to Bloomington and Auburn for winter visits.
John Micek reports his son Corporal Philip Micek in New Jersey was taken to a New York hospital for treatment. Leo Cockson, son of Mr and Mrs Free Cockson, departs for the army. Leo is the third Cockson boy in service. Kelly Barnett, living with the Nels Hasselbalch family, sent to a Columbus hospital. Mrs. Alfred Broderfuer and Mrs. Emma Enyeart visit relatives in Omaha and Columbus respectively. John Micek and Alta join Frank Seberger and others visiting the Bernt home midweek.
Rex Johnson son of Mr and Mrs Philip Johnson of Inglewood California is seriously ill with a blood disease and pneumonia at a children's hospital in that city. His condition is reported critical. The Johnson family is well known here with Mrs Johnson the daughter of Henry Schmoker.
The county board of commissioners will hold a regular session next Tuesday November 17.
The gas oil and mileage rationing registration date moved from November 12 to November 19 and will take place at county school houses. November 14 is the final day for fuel oil registration, and applicants are urged to act promptly for kerosene or fuel oil.
A flag dedication service was held Sunday evening as a new Christian Flag and Service Flag were dedicated to the church. A special section was reserved for the parents of the boys in service. W. W. Norton gave the main address and the church choir led the music. A star for each boy in service was placed on the Service Flag, totaling 29 stars.
Mrs J O Swanson and family hosted Friday dinner at Mrs Martin Appleton home honoring Lt and Mrs Ray Poland of Fort Sill Oklahoma. Other visits included Miss Maxine Bolton as weekend guest near Polk and Osceola residents Mr and Mrs Clarence Carlson at the Ekstrom home. Rosalie Ekstrom spent the week with the Carlsons.
Walter and Signe Samuelson completed a buying trip to St. Joseph Missouri and returned to Stromsburg midweek. A group of thirty two football players with Mr French and Mr Price enjoyed a meal at Todd's Cafe last Thursday afternoon. Don and Mrs Nordberg moved into their remodeled Hega Nelson house in the northeast part of town Friday. Charles Olson learned their son Johnnie was promoted to second class aviation machinist's mate and is stationed in San Juan Porto Rico. Staff Sgt Carl J Sisty returned to Fort Bliss Texas after a short visit with relatives. Mrs S D Evins and Miss Hazelle Hedbloom attended the Woman's Club Convention at Aurora.

George W. Pigsley rents the former Krebsbach Cafe space on West Main Street Shelby and opens for business Saturday. Alma Hayhurst of Grand Island visited her Shelby family over the weekend. Gerald Bachman, in India with the Army 51st Service Group, earned a first lieutenant promotion after ten months. Leigh tops Shelby 39 to 7 in Friday football. LeRoy Renander and Neil Denny families visit Norfolk and attend burial of Mrs. L. J. Fling. Bachman parents noted.
Reports circulate in Polk of a possible large government project south of Polk or near Hordville. Some say a concrete landing field large in area. others suggest a glider base. Surveyors have been seen, and local businessmen fear the influx of workers until official confirmation.
Ed Bonne recently discharged from an Omaha hospital is reported doing nicely. Robert McBeth builds a barn replacing the one burned months ago. The Chapel community mourns Mrs. Henry Schmoker former resident and extends sympathy to relatives. Osceola Local Farmers Union met at Miller schoolhouse Monday with Wallace Kinney of Shelby explaining rationing cards.
William E. Pratt age 72 a former Osceola businessman died Sunday at his home in Houston Texas Funeral services were held in Houston and he was buried beside his wife who died five years ago Pratt had moved to Texas years earlier to pursue oil and rice interests He is survived by two sons and two daughters Harry Osceola Marion Detroit Mrs Charles Dixon River Rouge Mich and Mrs C F Mitchell Roc o Nebraska
Mr and Mrs EB J Butler about 50 years old of Norfolk were found suffocated in a Shelby cabin on Saturday with a gas heater burning full. Sheriff Peterson and Dr Eklund declared death due to suffocation. A small pet dog also died. Bodies sent to Norfolk for burial.
Keith Cox former Osceola boy faced loss as his wife aged 32 and their six year old son died in a Bonners Ferry Idaho house fire last Thursday. Keith, a manual training instructor and orchestra director, suffered severe burns while attempting rescue. He has returned to Osceola to recover at his father Roy Cox’s home.
Osceola residents Dr. and Mrs. C. R. Peterson and Arnold Isaacson families hosted and visited neighbors in a sequence of Friday and Sunday gatherings. Guests included Norquest Wurtz Wyatt Lindburg Hanquist Train Jones Meerkatz Bodine Car léon and church events featured a farewell for Rev. Carl eon. The Lutheran Ladies Aid convened at H C Blase with a Boy Today Man Tomorrow study and quilting. Wayne Whittgren departed for army service as Nels Whittgren and family hosted meals in Crete and Hordville corners.
Ensign Fred L. Rasp son of Mr and Mrs F L Rasp of near Gresham has graduated from a reserve officers training school at Annapolis He volunteered for submarine service He was born in Hackberry precinct and is a graduate of the University of Nebraska.
Polk County Fair Association held its annual meeting in Osceola. Three directors were re-elected and two new ones chosen, including Mrs. Lloyd Hahn Pleasant Home precinct and Fred Wieseman Valley precinct. Next year’s fair dates set for August 16 17 18. Secretary Louis Hastert reported about $1000 to be paid on debts from parimutual funds. At a following directors meeting August Trenn Osceola was re-elected President, William Bachman Shelby Vice President, Louis Hastert Secretary, I. D. Huston Treasurer.
Elizabeth Huggler Schmoker born October 15 1868 in Canton Bern Switzerland died November 2 1942 in Osceola after brief illness. She married Henry Schmoker on October 15 1891 and seven children were born. Survived by husband four sons two daughters eleven grandchildren four great grandchildren two sisters and two brothers. Funeral services held at home with Rev John Herrmann. burial in Osceola cemetery.
Extension Agent Ray L. Cruise urged H Club members to enroll and complete all 1943 programs this year. He noted every member will participate in state war activities, needing twelve months to fulfill patriotic duties. Winter-formed clubs can meet without competing with outside work and plan social activities alongside the 4-H program.
