Polk County voters hear unofficial results from the November 3, 1942 general election. The item lists social visits and local activity as residents and families travel among Omaha Lincoln Hastings Sutton and Central City with residents like Bruce L Anthony, Liberty, and various Anderson Rystrom and Obrist family members noted in the region.
Mrs Henry Schmoker died after a lingering illness in Osceola on Monday afternoon November 2. She was 74. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at the Schmoker home conducted by Rev. John Herrmann. A full obituary will appear next week.

A rural transportation survey by Extension Service Victory Leaders reports 239 of 949 rural families have tires lasting through 1944, 474 cars with tires wearing out in a year, and 236 tires likely failing within six months. Community cooperation includes sharing rides and hauling for neighbors. In trucks, 174 are reported with 54 tires lasting through 1944 and 120 lasting a year or less.
St Paul Lutheran Church holds the annual Ladies Aid business meeting Thursday at 2:00 p.m. Officers for the coming year will be elected. Mrs Philip Nyberg will lead the program and refreshments are by Mrs Herman Anderson. Morning worship at 11 a.m. and Sunday School at 10 a.m. features the sermon Love Abounding. Union Flag Dedication Service follows at 7:30 p.m. at First Methodist. Tuesday November 10 at 2:00 p.m. the Women Missionary Society meets at the home of Mr and Mrs Albert Anderson east of Osceola.
Mr and Mrs Stanley M Laska of Osceola area learned their son Carl Laska in the U S Army Air Corps was missing in action. He was stationed in the Philippine Islands and last reported March 27 1942.
Special broadcasts on three Nebraska radio stations on Saturday November 7 open National 4 H Achievement Week in Nebraska. Ray L. Cruise Extension Agent notes programs on KFAB Lincoln 10 45 am KOWH Omaha 11 45 and the Nebraska Wireless Network 1 pm.
Bulletin 344 from the University of Nebraska College of Agriculture reports using sunlamps to provide energy for laying hens as an alternative to summer sunlight or fish oils. The bulletin is available via the County Extension Office.

The Methodist Church led by G A Randall invites the public to attend next Sunday evening November 8 services including a dedication of new Christian and Service Flags. Names of local boys in military service will be read and stars placed on the flag. Families urged to attend and sit together in the center section.
Edward Schnasse, Polk County, a 1937 Osceola High graduate, served Navy then Marines and now serves overseas. Osceola hosts November 11 Homecoming with Armistice Day football Stromsburg, evening program, queen, refreshments. 10c admission. Honor Roll lists ten seniors and top grades in sixth to eighth grades with multiple named students and scores.
Mr and Mrs Adolph Bernt motored to Bellwood Tuesday evening to visit Lew Seiz. Pete Boro of Columbus visited the area Thursday. Max Hiemer of Columbus joined Dale Engeart for a weekend in Omaha. Orville Enyeart and Earl with Mrs Emma Enyeart drove to North Bend to spend Sunday with Archie Sumner. Orville Enyeart also did business in Geneva last week. Frank Seberger and family visited Pete Seberger's home in Shelby on Sunday.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Watts announce the birth of daughter Janet Kay on October 31 at Osceola hospital. Mrs Watts, former Adaline Dahlstedt of Stromsburg, is the mother. Ardis Johnston and Barbara Joe Deay attended a teachers institute in Lincoln. Pvt LeMoyne Anderson, son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Anderson, visits family and is being transferred from California to Virginia. Mrs Martin Scholz and a group visited Columbus. Mrs Mabel McKeag and daughters from Lincoln spent Sunday with the James McKeag sr home.
The Woman's Society of Christian Service will meet November 12 with Lulu Burns and Mrs Jennie Campann the leader. Osceola Local Farmers Union holds its regular monthly meeting November 9. Oliver Westberg of Stromsburg visited John Nelson. Merle Luft transfers from Fort Robinson Arkansas to Fort Riley Kansas. Mr and Mrs Adam Luft visited him. Mr and Mrs Clarence Anderson visited Alma Peters in Osceola. Esther Wagner District 40 teacher attended the teachers Institute in Omaha Friday.

Local residents report visits and gatherings in Stromsburg and surrounding areas. Clyde Ericson returns from Grand Island with family, several dinners hosted at the Rystrom and Anderson households, and Miss Ruth Swanson visiting Hastings before returning home.
Shelby area residents attended Halloween events and school activities this week. Miss Margaret Thelen and other local teens joined a birthday party for Willard Augustine at his home Saturday evening. Dist. 15 held a party at the schoolhouse Friday night.
Alton J. Merrick, 35, son of the late Alonzo Merrick, a Shelby high school graduate of 1924, Wesleyan University 1929, Rush Medical College 1933, practiced in Fremont eight years before entering the Coast Artillery Anti Aircraft Medical Detachment as First Lieutenant at Burbank California on September 15, 1942.
W G Herrmann announces a public farm sale five miles north of Osceola on Thursday November 19 with 40 head of cattle including several milch cows. Two of his sons are in the army and two more expected to go soon. Watch for the advertisement in the paper next week.
Every car owner must register for mileage rationing at the school house in his district. The date changed from November 10 to November 12, 1942. Obtain an application from a teacher, study it, complete it, and bring it with your car registration receipt to the school house on Thursday afternoon November 12, 1942.
Leroy Pointer and Miss Carol Johnson attended a Teachers Convention in Lincoln last week. Miss Zetha Norris of Central City visited home folks over the weekend. Mrs. W. D. Hastings is slowly recovering from illness. Riverside School closed this week to aid corn picking. Millie Daniel of Osceola visits son Chalmer and wife for two weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Meacham planned winter in Los Angeles with Miss Nelle Wisely. Mrs. Zola Finley hosted a party Friday evening for local women. Reverend Hamilton spoke at Silver Creek High School Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Calmar Dunn enjoyed Sunday dinner with Mrs. Mina Buchta.
Swede Home News reports a recital by pupils of Miss Lillie Chindgren scheduled for Sunday November 8 at 8:00 p m at Swede Home Lutheran Church. Local social notes list visits and dinners among residents including Ekstrom Carlson Bolton Willits and Harless families with several towns mentioned.
