Christmas Seal Campaign Opens November Sixteen

The official opening of the Christmas Seal Campaign in Polk County will be on November 16. Seals are sent to over 1600 homes to support tuberculosis and other respiratory disease control. Volunteers gathered in Osceola to stuff envelopes, including Mrs. Mabel Kumpf and several others from Shelby Polk Stromsburg and Osceola, hoping for a large early response.

Contour farming gains fame as Polk County trademark

Twenty five years ago Polk County farmers prided on straight furrows. Now contour farming with terraces slows runoff, saves moisture, and curbs erosion. Harvest on Wallace Peterson Farm Moves Fast

Eleven combines and many trucks harvested 100 acres of corn on the Wallace Peterson farm with Farmers Coop and Oil Assn aiding. Liska to Show Travel Slides Friday in Osceola

Osceola Lions Club sponsors Danny Liska of Niobrara for an 8 p.m. Friday talk and slide show in the school gym. Liska recounts a motorcycle trip from North America to South America with images of archeological ruins, Argentine cattle ranching, Amazon Indians, a lost Inca city, volcanoes, and other exotic subjects. Polk County Crops Weather Report Summary

Gary Garey reports no rainfall for the week in Polk County with adequate surface and subsoil moisture. Winter wheat is excellent. corn and irrigated sorghums are good. dry sorghums and soybeans are fair. Corn about 25 percent harvested. sorghums 80 percent. soybeans 90 percent. Moisture content ranges 17-28 percent for corn, 11-17 percent for sorghums, and 9-12 percent for soybeans. Range and pasture feed and hay supplies are average. feed grain above average. Farmers continue harvesting grain sorghum, soybean, and corn, with some fall plowing. Warm weather aids fall harvest, and fencing of milo and corn fields is common, enabling good fall cattle pasturing.
