Westgren Wins Husking Contest in Polk County
The Polk County corn husking contest drew 500 spectators and 9 entrants. Flary Westgren of Stromsburg husked 1670 lb with 203.7 lb deductions, net 1466.3 lb (19.5 bu). Curtis Flodman placed second at 1401 lb net (18.7 bu) and Otto Daum third. committee rules favored Westgren for state entry if needed. The Polk County Farm Bureau plans to cover Flodman’s travel costs to the Seward state contest.

Miss Eloise Beatty of Osceola earns a place in the Doane College Acappella Choir, a 36 voice group that sings without accompaniment or from memory. Under Prof. Charles V. Kettering the choir performs Sunday services in Crete and tours statewide. Twenty-one women and fifteen men rehearse three times weekly, selecting high quality works by Tschaikowsky Gretchaninov Elgar Franck Palestrina and others, with about a dozen substitutes on call.
