Social Security Payments In Co. Surpass 100000 Millestones

Polk county retired workers received 106404 in social security benefits last year with 40536 paid to dependents and survivors. The rise reflects a 25 percent increase due to 1954 amendments. Daisy Dairy Club and Clover Leaf Dairy Club met in the IOOF hall on Friday October 26 for a potluck supper with each family bringing a dish. Mrs Merle Dawes and Mrs Paul Swanson prepared dessert cocoa and coffee. After eating, members presented annual reports and Wilber Bloom shared a speech plus slides from Ak-Sar-Ben and other 4-H activities.

Osceola reports temperatures and degree days courtesy of the Gas Company. The weekly report covers the prior Monday with past 30 days showing 370 degree days in 1955 and 254 in 1956, 45.7 percent colder in 1955, and heating season to date 33.1 percent warmer than 1955. Average temps for the past 30 days show 57.7 percent in 1956.

Osceola Stores Observe Armistice Day Closure Plan

Osceola stores will close Monday November 12 to observe Armistice Day since November 11 falls on Sunday. Chamber of Commerce approved the plan at its meeting. Stores will stay closed all day and reopen Tuesday morning after the long weekend. Patrons should plan ahead to meet needs.

Royal Neighbor Camp Hosts Fourth District Convention

Royal Neighbors of America held the Fourth District Convention in Osceola with nearly 100 attendees from 12 towns. District Oracle Lois Grossnicklaux presided as Supreme Auditor Edith Evans and State Supervisor Alma Snyder attended along with district deputies. The event featured business sessions, a noon banquet, a photo presentation of the R N A Home in Davenport, and ritual work. The 1957 meeting is slated for Fairbury.

Serviceman Verlin G Gronlund Listed In Korea Unit

Pfc Verlin G Gronlund son of Mr and Mrs Gerhard Gronlund Stromsburg is a member of the 7th Infantry Division in Korea as a vertical control operator in Battery C of the 57th Field Artillery Battalion. He entered the Army in August 1955 and arrived in Korea last February.

Fonda Dies From Sudden Heart Attack at 55

Dr. G. C. Fonda 55 of 2520 West John Grand Island died suddenly of a heart attack at his home on Friday morning November 2. He was a Osceola High School graduate and had practiced dentistry in Grand Island for ten years. Survivors include his wife and one daughter Mrs. Dale Carrell of Scottsbluff, four brothers and two sisters. Funeral services were held in Grand Island with interment in Osceola cemetery. Mrs. Fonda is sister of Mrs. Don Byers and Lynn Snider. Attending from distance included Donald Fonda of Modes California, Mrs. Fern Schell of Oakdale California, and Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Kirtley of Islamorada Florida.

Johnson Chevrolet invites the public to view the 1957 Oldsmobile on Thursday November 8 at the garage. No special event planned, but friends are welcome to inspect the redesigned model showcasing extensive changes.

October weather shows above average temps and light rainfall

The first half of October was dry until a 0.45 inch rain on the 15th. Additional showers totaled 1.13 inches for the month. Lows rose above normal, with two freezing days on the 26th and 31st, while highs ranged to the 90s on two days and mostly 60s to 80s otherwise.

Polk County ASC announces sealed bids for hauling grain from county bin sites to dealers under the Emergency Feed Program.
