Polk County boys in service update from Osceola area

Osceola readers learn of local service members during or after training and discharge. Thomas Schmoker reports basic infantry at Camp Maxey Texas and quartermaster training at Fort Francis E. Warren Wyoming with APO in San Francisco. Raymond Parks of Little Creek Virginia is discharged after 45 months aboard the Forrest with three combat stars. Arthur Umshler, wounded in European theater, receives medical discharge at Camp Carson Colorado. Kenneth Almstrum landed in the States at San Francisco. Sheldon Bond home from Camp Bowie Texas with honorable discharge after almost four years. Tommy Mickey on 45 day furlough from Grand Island. Howard Boden and Hollis Campann discharged in Denver after serving since February 1949, including Pacific theater. Roy Johnson aboard a supply ship in the Pacific on way home via Okinawa. Robert Johnson discharged and working in San Diego. Calmer Boden promoted to sergeant in Japan. Warrent Officer Raymond Poland on furlough in Osceola with wife and two sons. Carl Moore, Marine navigator, reports 12 111 miles flown in eight days with hops through Palmyra Fiji Guadalcanal Peleliu Guam and back. Donald Malek transferred to a Missouri camp. Bob Grossnicklaus on leave from San Francisco after a coastwise trip.

Eklund Father of Local Doctor Dies at Home

A. A. Eklund, father of Dr. H. S. Eklund of this city, died at his home near Gresham Tuesday afternoon after a lengthy illness. Funeral arrangements had not been made at this writing.

District No 23 held a Halloween party at the school house on Wednesday afternoon with costumes masks games contests and treats. Miss Olive McBeth visited the school Tuesday. Miss Eldena Johnson of Beatrice has been engaged to teach the second and third grades in Osceola schools. The vacancy followed the resignation of Mrs Iris Raspley several weeks ago. Johnson is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Gilbert Johnson of this city and has been teaching the second grade in Beatrice.

The bride, a former telegraph operator at Winter General Hospital, and the groom, a World War II veteran from the South Pacific now with Western Electric in Addison Illinois, plan to reside there.
