The Record announces December 4, 1969 as the first offset edition replacing letterpress. The switch promises deeper blacks and crisper photos while staff retrains on electronic equipment. Readers will be updated on deadlines and rates as the newsroom moves forward.
John F. Kennedy Council Knights of Columbus named Eugene Gabel Knight of the Year. Past Grand Knights Leon Nicolas, Vic Cerny, and Eugene Kosch received pins. Mark Alt and Ed Richter earned Special Council Awards for community work. Eighty-five attendees enjoyed the event at Shelby Parish Hall.
Osceola improved to 6-0-2 after a 28-6 victory over Palmer. The Bulldogs trailed 6-0 at halftime but erupted after the break with a 53 yard drive, a safety and two late touchdowns. Leo Potter rushed for 110 yards and two scores, Cal Coffin added 99 yards, and Lynn Boden had key plays on defense and as a rusher/returner.
Dr Ralph L Anderson of Sacramento State College was elected president of the Psychology Association for California. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Glenn I Anderson of Osceola. Pvt Lee Grossnicklaus, son of Mr and Mrs Ray Grossnicklaus of Shelby, left after a 10 day leave following basic training at Fort Polk Louisiana and will return there for reassignment.
County Government Day is planned for Polk County High School juniors on Wednesday November 12. Osceola American Legion Auxiliary Unit will serve a noon meal to the students. Osceola hosts an Invitational Band Clinic on November 14 and 15 with nine area schools invited to participate. The community is reminded to shop early in Osceola for Veterans Day closures on Tuesday November 11 and to display the American flag. A Republican Banquet is set for Wednesday at the OHS Auditorium with Governor Norbert Tiemann as speaker.
A bridal shower and dessert luncheon Sunday November 2 at the John Malek home honored Mrs. Merwin Twarling. Seven friends hosted for forty guests including out of town attendees from Omaha and Stromsburg. Fall colors decorated the event.
Consumers Public Power Dist announces a 610.45 dollar rebate to Polk County as the first half of payments in lieu of real estate and personal taxes for 1969. The funds go to the county treasurer for distribution to county, city and school districts as required by law.
The World Champion Appaloosa Performance Horse will be named at the Appaloosa Horse Show from November 13 to 15 at the State Fair Grounds in Lincoln. Tickets cost $1 for Friday and Saturday evening shows with drawings for a saddle and a double horse trailer. Performance Appaloosas from 125 clubs nationwide will compete as 500 plus head are expected. daytime eliminations are free while evening shows begin at 7 30 p.m.
Local officials report threefold rise in property destruction after Halloween. Incidents include destroyed Route mail boxes painted homes and signs, slashed window screens damaged cars and a cedar tree cut down before the high school building.
Osceola and Shelby Girl Scouts and Brownies are invited to an open house tea at Osceola United Methodist Church on Sunday November 9 from 3 to 5 PM. Honorees Terri Howe and Becky McDonald have earned First Class Scout awards. Senior Scout Advisor Marie Odgers leads arrangements.
Tim Engel of Clarks won this week’s Quarterback Contest earning a $5.00 merchandise certificate after a perfect score for the judged games. Close runners were Mrs. Jerome Gabriel Shelby and Joe Anderson Lincoln each missing one. Marvin Bernt guessed the exact tie breaker Osceola 28 Palmer 6. Nebraska was named to beat Colorado by a three to one ratio. Deadline for entries is Friday November 14 at 5:00 p.m.
Fifty-one youths from three Osceola churches collected 148 dollars and 36 cents for UNICEF after a Halloween trick-or-treating event on Sunday night. The group met at St. Vincent's Hall for assignments and returned there for refreshments, with donations surpassing previous years.
Postmaster Lowell Hanson reports 4 mailboxes on the Rural Routes out of Osceola damaged or destroyed on Halloween night and 3 more damaged last July. Postal authorities and the County events Office have been notified. The incident highlights a federal law imposing fines up to 1000 dollars or up to three years in prison for willful mailbox damage.

The Gene Dappen and family of 1660 Otoe Lincoln announce the birth of their son Ronald Brian born Oct. 26 Former Osceola schools teacher Gene Dappen now serves as pastor at St James Methodist Church in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Danny Oquist Tracy Walgren and Kimberly Stromberg won first second and third in the 4th grade and under group. Allene Baer Debbie Heiden Susan Schmoker and Peggy Tindall won in the older division with Allene as a Purple People Eater. Cash prizes and treats were given. about 40 children attended at The Club per manager Walt Harbour.
The OHS Bulldogs travel to Genoa on Friday November 7 for a bid at an undefeated season. Also noted are senior class activities including cap gown decisions and senior keys orders in OHS colors orange and white.
