The Light and Water Committee of the David City Council announces higher city water rates. Two aging wells failed to meet growing demand, were replaced with new wells doubling pumping capacity, funded from water rate revenue with no bonded indebtedness.
Central City has run a public library since 1894 with donated books and services. In 1895 the city levied funds to support the venture as it notes a $25,000 building project.
A raging range fire southeast of Hershey was controlled Wednesday with about 200 volunteers. The grassland fire scorched nearly seven miles but caused no estimated injuries or structural damage. Local report: Lincoln County Tribune.
Lynn Beck, son of Mr and Mrs Harold Beck, caught his right hand in an elevator chain while reaching for corn. Surgeons operated on his hand at York hospital Wednesday morning. Reports note Schuyler fire truck aided a nearby farm blaze four miles from town in the latest Firemen issue. An Oshkosh infant was flown to Omaha for specialists after a medical flight this week. Stromsburg Grocery sold to E E McGrath of Kearney, previously a Donald Wholesale salesman from Grand Island.

Cecil Larson and family from Grand Island visited C O Carlson. Michael Cole visited grandparents Walter and Mrs Larson while Harry Cole’s Osceola family traveled west. Joe Karges hosted Sunday dinner with Hershel Reisdorff and Rupert Topinka families from Shelby and Columbus visitors joined. Bertha Urban of Ewing visited C R Carlson. Arvid Carlson and son joined C O Carlson for Sunday dinner.
Voters head to polls Tuesday for statewide and local races. Governor Val Peterson seeks another term with Walter Raecke opposing. road program is major issue. Congressional scene features Karl Stefan vs Duane K. Peterson. Several county offices report no opposition, others field Republican and Democrat challengers. Non political ticket lists two candidates for Polk county directors. REA slate and unopposed Olive M. McBeth for public instruction.
Mr and Mrs Milo Cochrane of Omaha announce the birth of a daughter Monday October 30 at St Cath rine s Hospital in Omaha. She weighed seven pounds and 14 ounces and has been named Bernice Jean. Mr and Mrs Tillman Joy went to Omaha Tuesday afternoon to visit their new granddaughter.
Osceola stores will not open Saturday November 11 after a chamber of commerce vote. Stores will stay open Friday night November 10 until 10 30 p m for late shoppers. Three county towns Polk Stromsburg and Osceola have announced Armistice Day closures.
About 120 Polk County Legionnaires attended the Fall convention in Polk on Thursday October 26 with Jan Hartman a Czechoslovakian refugee as the evening speaker. He spoke on Communist overthrow in his homeland and escaped to Bavaria on skis on New Year’s Eve 1948. Art Melies and Harry Decker appeared as guest speakers. The banquet featured roast turkey served by the Legion Auxiliary. Chick Ericson led the business meeting. Lowell Hanson was chosen County Adjutant. Alton Wilhelms served as toastmaster.
Shirley Carman of Silver Creek Medical and Mrs Sybilla Hotchkiss of Osceola Nyberg in Los Angeles California welcomed births. Mrs Clair Emmons reports a baby girl named Patricia Lynne born Monday October 30.
Sisters of the Skillet meet Monday night November 6 with Mrs Jack Steeple after date change due to election day. NBBC gathers Friday night November 3 with Lillian Timm. Entre Nous meets November 8 with Deloras Hanson.
Former Osceola residents gathered for the second Osceola Association picnic at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel C. Stoner in San Gabriel California on October 15. About eighty attendees from near and far shared memories and a lunch as two bulletin boards displayed Osceola history and recent photos.
Miss Shirley Ann Heffner and Milton E. Knapp were married in a Friday afternoon ceremony at the First Presbyterian Church Chapel in Omaha. The couple, with families from Omaha and Chester Illinois, were attended by Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Johnson of Osceola. The bride, a Schuyler High School and 1944 graduate, works as a stenographer. the groom, an Osceola native and University of Nebraska alum, is a Creamery Phg. Man. Co. salesman. A reception followed at the bride’s brother’s home.
Seven Polk county students join 737 enrolled at Nebraska Wesleyan University this fall. Marilyn Miller, Osceola freshman, is the Osceola student. Also listed are Dorothy Carpenter Lois Johnson Jo Ann Lind from Polk County and Roger Fosbender Joan Smith Donald Walden from Shelby.
Osceola heads into its final game of the season as its fathers attend the Friday night clash with Fullerton. Key players were sidelined by injuries in a 19 19 draw with Clarks Bryan Swanson Gabriel and Hermie Anderson required hospital observation.
Osceola Junior Class presents Murdered Alive Friday night at 8 in the high school auditorium. Cast includes Libby Ryder Marian Boden Tillie Meek Zedicher Arden Ryder Jo Anne Carlson Stella Backus Eleanor Gabriel and others with a mysterious stranger and a tense curtain line to grip the audience.
Residents and visitors include Mr. and Mrs. L A Krumme of St Joseph Missouri with their daughter and son in law the Carlsons. Glenn Buchta of McCook and family hosted at Hilbert Buchta's home. Dr Michaelson from Los Angeles spoke in Stromsburg and Columbus engagements were attended by the Dake and McCormick families. Bob Bryan returned from a Colorado trip with hunting plans unfulfilled.
Fund-raising week brought in 453.75 new contributions, reaching 1379.75 total and nearing the halfway mark. Volunteers urged organizations to boost pledges as local residents and families gathered for wedding anniversary and birthday observances within Columbus and surrounding towns.
