City Water Rates Raised After New Wells Opened

The Light and Water Committee of the David City Council announces higher city water rates. Two aging wells failed to meet growing demand, were replaced with new wells doubling pumping capacity, funded from water rate revenue with no bonded indebtedness.

Central City Public Library Opens with City Support

Central City has run a public library since 1894 with donated books and services. In 1895 the city levied funds to support the venture as it notes a $25,000 building project.

Firefighters Contain Seven Mile Range Blaze Near Hershey

A raging range fire southeast of Hershey was controlled Wednesday with about 200 volunteers. The grassland fire scorched nearly seven miles but caused no estimated injuries or structural damage. Local report: Lincoln County Tribune.

Elevator accident injures Beck child in rural Corn Belt town

Lynn Beck, son of Mr and Mrs Harold Beck, caught his right hand in an elevator chain while reaching for corn. Surgeons operated on his hand at York hospital Wednesday morning. Reports note Schuyler fire truck aided a nearby farm blaze four miles from town in the latest Firemen issue. An Oshkosh infant was flown to Omaha for specialists after a medical flight this week. Stromsburg Grocery sold to E E McGrath of Kearney, previously a Donald Wholesale salesman from Grand Island.

Birth announced for Omaha girl BerNice Jean

Mr and Mrs Milo Cochrane of Omaha announce the birth of a daughter Monday October 30 at St Cath rine s Hospital in Omaha. She weighed seven pounds and 14 ounces and has been named Bernice Jean. Mr and Mrs Tillman Joy went to Omaha Tuesday afternoon to visit their new granddaughter.

Osceola Stores to Close on Armistice Day

Osceola stores will not open Saturday November 11 after a chamber of commerce vote. Stores will stay open Friday night November 10 until 10 30 p m for late shoppers. Three county towns Polk Stromsburg and Osceola have announced Armistice Day closures.

Polk County Legion Holds Fall Convention Gathering

About 120 Polk County Legionnaires attended the Fall convention in Polk on Thursday October 26 with Jan Hartman a Czechoslovakian refugee as the evening speaker. He spoke on Communist overthrow in his homeland and escaped to Bavaria on skis on New Year’s Eve 1948. Art Melies and Harry Decker appeared as guest speakers. The banquet featured roast turkey served by the Legion Auxiliary. Chick Ericson led the business meeting. Lowell Hanson was chosen County Adjutant. Alton Wilhelms served as toastmaster.

Heffner Knapp nuptials in First Presbyterian Church Omaha

Miss Shirley Ann Heffner and Milton E. Knapp were married in a Friday afternoon ceremony at the First Presbyterian Church Chapel in Omaha.
