Osceola baseballers rallied after six innings, scoring seven runs with timely hitting and help from Sap Taddiken and Mr. Ossian to beat Shelby 8 to 7. Upcoming games: Polk at Osceola, Stromsburg at Silver Creek, Shelby at York next Sunday.
Stanton Iowa visitors return home. Laura Peterson stays indefinitely. Dorcas Society hosts Swedish program at Swede Home Church with Anna Oberg speaker. Choir and Boys Chorus perform June 7 with Swedish numbers and Swedish refreshments. Various locals host visitors from Iroquois Osceola and Omaha and plan summer employments and church events. Alice Oberg has appendicitis operation. Luther League program planned.
Elmer Allison, a prominent farmer northwest of Stromsburg, was seriously injured Saturday when the car he tried to crank rolled in gear. He shielded his son from danger but was knocked down and run over, later hospitalized in Omaha. He suffered a severe scalp wound a crushed neck vertebrae multiple broken ribs and internal injuries. His six year old son escaped serious harm.
In Eller's hall a miscellaneous shower honored Miss Eileen Enyeart with games and gifts. A large crowd attended a Sunday there with other local events including baptisms and teaching changes in District 68.
Adeline Anderson 16 of Osceola received two years in the Geneva girls home after being found guilty of forging and passing checks signed by local businessmen. Her sister Eunice 18 was bound over to district court on the same charge, while Charlotte Johnson 16 awaits her hearing. Pending disposition, the trio is jailed in the county jail. Checks forged in Osceola and later found in York and Columbus.
Vernon Thelander eight son of Mr and Mrs Frank Thelander living west of Osceola was seriously injured when struck by an automobile while walking home from school. Raymond Fellows gave him a ride part way then another car driven by Sam Pepper of Omaha struck him. He was taken to Osceola Hospital unconscious and is under care of Dr R L Schroeder.
Miss Laura Krieser of York cares for Vernon Thelander injured in an auto crash last week. Alice Oberg age 13 from near Clarks had an appendectomy by Dr. R. L. Schroeder on Saturday. Reuben Berglund recuperating after major surgery by Dr. Schroeder last Thursday. Mrs. Everett Powell had appendicitis operation and returned home. Frank Langhammer Sr. of Shelby admitted for medical care at Osceola Hospital this week and is patient of Dr. Schroeder.
Dr Salsbury s Laboratories sponsored a one day school of instruction on poultry diseases at Fremont Iowa attended by Jay Timmons manager of the Farmers Produce and Chick Store. Lectures on recognition prevention and treatment followed by demonstrations and postmortems of diseased fowls.
Shelby W. H. Kelley leads front of the theatre remodeling with modern electrical fixtures. Numerous visits note Emily Alt and Lillian Gabel returned from Omaha alumni banquet for St. Joseph hospital nurses. Various locals vacation, visits, and school events span Shelby and surrounding towns.

Readable fragments show a pharmacist declining love potions and suggesting a remedy for an unnamed woman. The odd exchange hints at a local curiosity or social caution in a historical context.
Notices warn that several youngsters are using sling shots to kill birds and damage street lights. Citizens are urged to report any sightings to the chief of police or city authorities. The police chief is instructed to confiscate all sling shots.
Jay Hastings, Polk County’s last representative in the bicameral legislature, returned home after an unusually long session. He led in the chair seven times during the extended adjournment and helped shape a district realignment making Polk County part of a Polk Hamilton Clay three-county district elected on non political ballots.
Ada Lees and Howard C. Miller of Shelby wed May 22 at the Methodist Parsonage in Shelby with Rev. Pengelly officiating. The couple plans to live on a farm east of Shelby in Butler County. The bride is the daughter of John and Ada Lees, a Osceola High and University of Nebraska alumna and rural school teacher. The groom, son of Ray Miller, graduated Rising City High and works on the farm.
In a church note they warn of Old Man Slumski as a major foe to the church. They urge higher Sunday School and worship attendance. Sunday School at 10 and worship at 11 next Sunday. Sermon topic Living A Thousand Lives. Epworth League service at 7. June is month of roses.
Mrs Louis Ruzicka was found hanging in a tool shed on the Polk area farm Friday night. Ill health is listed as the cause. Her husband Louis returned from the field to find her. Dr Slusser and Sheriff Peterson attended. No inquest. The couple married about a year and a half. Helen Makovicka born March 20 1910 at Bee Nebraska. Survived by husband parents and three sisters. Funeral services held at the Ruzicka home and Bee. Interment at Catholic Cemetery Bee led by Father Kluthy.
Lowell Cummings from Harvard spends a week with friends while his parents plan Decoration Day visits. Mrs. June Person and Miss Marian Olson arrive from Valley for a few days with the Olson family. A funeral in Grand Island draws local families, and many residents make short trips or move households for work and visits to Blair York Hampton Holdrege Wausa Grand Island Norfolk Battle Creek Central City Fremont Stromsburg.
In Polk County the wheat referendum shows 325 of 416 signers vote yes to continue acreage adjustment, 91 vote no. Among 68 non-signers, ten vote against the proposal while rains kept many from voting. The question asked whether to follow the current program through the 196 crop year.
Osceola hosted a Saturday ceremony for 180 graduates from Polk County rural and elementary schools. Delaware State University educator Prof Harry E Bradford spoke on The Magic Touch referencing Aladdin, Estelma Felton performed violin with Irene Whitacre on piano, Rural Teachers Chorus sang, and 43 pupils earned 90 100 percent on state exams earning honor roll spots led by Bertha Beada district 52.
Polk county farmers plan sorghum planting this year and are advised to treat seed carefully. Copper carbonate dust or new improved ceresan can be used to coat kernels, preventing smut and mold and possibly boosting stands. Small batches may be treated in a milk can with rolling and shaking to coat seeds.
The Lutheran Church lists Sunday services at 10 a m and 11 a m with worship and Sunday School and 8 p m vesper service led by the Luther League. Tuesday features choir practice with all south of the river choir members and Miss Anna Marie Gustafson of Genoa attending as District Choir leader.
Corn planting continues amid cold rains while farmers replant. Families and guests from Stamford to Wheatland and Osceola socialize, celebrate birthdays, weddings, and scholarships. Notables include Burne, Sarrow, Simms Behrns, and Richmonds with travel to Litchfield and Tekamah.
