Weekend of reunions and Memorial Day activities in Osceola

The community gears up for a May 29 to May 30 weekend of events led by high school reunions and the Memorial Day observance. Activities include Oldtimers Firemen gathering, reunion dinners for classes ending in six, a grand parade, court lawn show, Pied Pipers performances, and an alumni banquet with limited tickets remaining. The Sunday dedication of St John’s Lutheran Church marks the museum grounds. Memorial Day honors fallen service members and features theatre marquee promotions for upcoming summer events. Local updates include a silver anniversary souvenir, exterior painting at Cerny’s Greenhouse, and pool season prep under manager Dave Bowman with local guards.

Osceola High honors students at Recognition Night

Osceola High School honors students at Recognition Night with a long list of awards across Seventh Grade Americanism Essay Contest, Dramatics, Typing, Honor Roll for 27 and 36 weeks, Vocal and Band distinctions, and Senior and Underclass honors. The American Legion sponsors baseball and softball seasons opening this week with multiple age groups traveling to Rising City and Ulysses, followed by home games in late May and early June.

Alumni Reunion Draws 20 Year Class to Record Event

Alumni from the 20 year class begin arriving for the Record reunion with strong interest and many of the original 28 reserving spots. Several former teachers are expected to attend as honored guests.

Osceola Legion Supports Youth Baseball Since 1940s

The Osceola American Legion William Wolfe Post No 91 has funded and aided youth baseball and softball for decades. Since the 1940s the post promoted men’s baseball in the Cornhusk er Semi Pro League, helped install lights at the county fair diamond, supported Little League and Midget programs, added girls softball in 1973, and now runs seven youth teams with 100 to 120 players, spending about 3500 to 4000 dollars plus many volunteer hours annually.

Superintendent Virgil Bugbee will retire effective June 30 ending a 42 1/2 year career in education. He served 19 years as Osceola superintendent after starting as a teacher in Steele City Nebraska and later teaching at Endicott Bruning Arcadia before joining Osceola.

Merchants Rally For Win Over Osceola In Columbus

A two run ninth inning gave the Merchants a 5 to 4 victory over Osceola at Columbus. Osceola led 4 to 3 through eight innings as third baseman Mike Hoffman homered in the sixth. Prokop and Donelson, Lindgren, Wardinger and Steiner starred for Columbus. Osceola heads to Wahoo Sunday May 30 and to Schuyler Wednesday June 2.

Postmaster Retired After 12 Years in Osceola

Lowell Hanson retired as Osceola postmaster after 12 years of service on Friday May 21 Karen E Gestrine was named Officer-In-Charge for the time being Hanson a Osceola native and Osceola High School graduate joined the Postal Service on April 1 1937 He served in the U S Navy from November 1941 to September 1945 returning to the Postal Service as a Regular Clerk On May 22 1964 he was appointed Acting Postmaster and received the permanent appointment from President Lyndon B Johnson in August 1964
