A class of about two hundred Polk County youths received diplomas at the Muse Theatre in Osceola last Friday. The ceremony featured an address by Bess Gearhart Morrison and included lists of graduates by district with numerous names and affiliations.
The grading contract for the Osceola route of Highways 16 and 81 was awarded to Abel construction. Capitol Bridge Co of Lincoln won the bridge contract. Early this week engineers arrived in Osceola to establish headquarters and start work soon. The project is set to begin in the first week of June between Shelby and Osceola. Workers must apply at their local Post Office for a social security number.
Miss Berths Mae Jones and Morris O. Dunn of Osceola were married Sunday afternoon at the Methodist parsonage with Rev. Monkman officiating. The couple were attended by Miss Frances Dunn and Old Bond. They will reside on a farm northwest of Osceola after a brief wedding trip.
Commencement exercises for the Class of 1937 were held in the high school auditorium with Dean F. F. Henzick of the University of Nebraska giving the address. Margarette Smithberg delivered the valedictory. diplomas were awarded by Albin D. Anderson. The 50th anniversary of the Stromsburg High School alumni association influenced program choices. The issue also notes the upcoming Fourth of July celebration plans, a Yessir Club Banquet attendance, and a series of reunions and jubilees including a large alumni picnic at Buckley Park with music, speeches, sports, and free coffee.
Mrs. Eugene Thelen and her young son visited Shelby for two weeks from Teastrike Minnesota. Nebraska travelers Harold Williams and family returned home after a Shelby visit, and W F Crozier went to Stapleton after visiting Polk County. Families from Bruning Columbus Lincoln and Marysville were seen visiting relatives and attending events. A Vacation Bible School was held at the Methodist church and the Duren couple celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary with relatives.
Miss Francis Dannelly daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter Dannelly Genoa and John Inness son of Mr and Mrs Andrew Inness Osceola were married at the Omaha Methodist Church parsonage by Rev Kendall. The bride wore sky blue swede crepe and roses. The groom in oxford gray. They were attended by Dr and Mrs John LeMar of Omaha and will reside on the Arthur Engelhardt farm.
Osceola students ended the school year with a Junior-Senior banquet at the high school gym featuring solos by Betty Jo Carson and Margaret McFadden, violin by Maxine Brooks, and piano by Mary Ruth Rhodes. Baccalaureate was at the M E Church with Rev. Monkman and Rev. Melin assisting, followed by commencement at the Muse Theatre with speaker M F Mulvaney of Omaha.
Farmers urged to identify and eradicate deep rooted weeds spreading across fields. A 16 page circular titled Battle Against Weeds offers drawings of Leafy Spurge and Bindweed and free copies for readers requesting guidance. Send weed samples with root to the Agricultural College for identification and poisons information.
Announcement of Eve lyn Johnson and Dr. Alton Pardee’s June 19 wedding at Johnson family home in Saronville. Johnson teaches in Polk Schools. Various local visits, travels, and events including hospital update for Mrs. Wurtz, graduation notices, and social gatherings across Polk and nearby towns.
With school out and rising heat, the community plans a formal pool opening on Sunday June 6. The popular pool will return after a modern filtration system impressed last summer and the park board aims to boost family picnics with new equipment and comforts.
Mr and Mrs Tom Schmoker hosted relatives for Sunday dinner. Numerous visitors and family groups were noted from Columbus Osceola Stromsburg and Buckley Park. The American Legion of Shelby to decorate graves at 4 30 after Sunday services reflecting the local social scene.
West Side notes report the Dorcas Society will gather in the church parlors Friday at 2 30 pm with Harriet Thelander and Francis Carlson hosting. Local visits include the Bolton family at the Cecil Bolton home near Benedict and several families visiting Martin Appelton and Frank Larson homes. A weiner roast at the Kenneth Peterson home drew many friends and relatives.
The Methodist Church lists 10:00 a.m. Sunday School led by El ton Berck and 11:00 a.m. Union Memorial Services at the Swedish Lutheran Church with a sermon titled The Sword and The Spirit. The Ladies Aid Service Committee includes Mrs. Edgar Wisely, Mrs. Richard Brooks, Mrs Kennethy Cornish, Mrs. Frank Mills, and Mrs. Albert Monkman. The W H M S meets with Miss Lulu Hendricks June 1. the Official Board meets at the parsonage June 1. Baptismal service planned for Children’s Day on June 13. Albert C. Monkman, pastor.

Polk County received a general soaking Tuesday night with Osceola reporting 3.7 inches. The rainfall promises relief for drought stricken wheat and will require replanting some corn, though conditions are more hopeful for farmers.
The entire school faculty held a surprise farewell in the High School Home Economics Room for Mr. and Mrs. W E Thompson. Light refreshments and a gift expressed appreciation for his cooperation and helpfulness. They wish the couple happiness in their new home.
Bob Hansen earned the eighth grade D.A.R. Medal for the highest average in American History with a 97, the best in Osceola among medal recipients. Freshman Bob Mills received the Good Citizenship medal, chosen by faculty for representing good citizenship. Bob Mills also won the History award last year in eighth grade.
Acting on a county attorney directive, Sheriff Peterson ordered the removal of all slot machines and punch boards in the county. An estimate suggests Osceola alone spends about $800 monthly in nickels on these devices, with similar sums in other towns making it a costly indoor pastime.
Church School leaders from three Osceola churches organize a two week Bible training program with worship, crafts, and recreation. Separate age groups, plans discussed at Presbyterian Church, details via Sunday Schools posters and canvassing, 9:00 to 11:30 a.m., parents urged to enroll children for a valuable experience.
Bertha Johnson of Swede Home married Howard Andersen of Omaha at Swede Home Lutheran Church. Rev. Sward officiated before floral altars with organ by Miss Lillie Chindgren, singing by Mrs. Francis Bell Andersen and Rev. Roy Johnson. They plan to reside in Omaha after a Colorado Springs honeymoon.
Carl Allinder underwent a tonsillectomy performed by Dr. Eklund on Monday. The procedure occurred at the medical facility where the two were listed as patient and surgeon.
