County 8th Graders Receive Diplomas in Osceola

A class of about two hundred Polk County youths received diplomas at the Muse Theatre in Osceola last Friday. The ceremony featured an address by Bess Gearhart Morrison and included lists of graduates by district with numerous names and affiliations.

Highways 16 and 81 Project Let in Lincoln

The grading contract for the Osceola route of Highways 16 and 81 was awarded to Abel construction. Capitol Bridge Co of Lincoln won the bridge contract. Early this week engineers arrived in Osceola to establish headquarters and start work soon. The project is set to begin in the first week of June between Shelby and Osceola. Workers must apply at their local Post Office for a social security number.

Jones Dunn Wedding Solemnized at Osceola Parsonage

Miss Berths Mae Jones and Morris O. Dunn of Osceola were married Sunday afternoon at the Methodist parsonage with Rev. Monkman officiating. The couple were attended by Miss Frances Dunn and Old Bond. They will reside on a farm northwest of Osceola after a brief wedding trip.

Stromsburg High School holds 1937 commencement and Jubilee events

Commencement exercises for the Class of 1937 were held in the high school auditorium with Dean F. F. Henzick of the University of Nebraska giving the address. Margarette Smithberg delivered the valedictory. diplomas were awarded by Albin D. Anderson. The 50th anniversary of the Stromsburg High School alumni association influenced program choices. The issue also notes the upcoming Fourth of July celebration plans, a Yessir Club Banquet attendance, and a series of reunions and jubilees including a large alumni picnic at Buckley Park with music, speeches, sports, and free coffee.

Shelby Community Notes on Visits and Milestones

Mrs. Eugene Thelen and her young son visited Shelby for two weeks from Teastrike Minnesota. Nebraska travelers Harold Williams and family returned home after a Shelby visit, and W F Crozier went to Stapleton after visiting Polk County. Families from Bruning Columbus Lincoln and Marysville were seen visiting relatives and attending events. A Vacation Bible School was held at the Methodist church and the Duren couple celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary with relatives.

Dannelly Inness Marriage in Omaha Parsonage

Osceola Schools Close for Summer After Banquet and Commencement

Osceola students ended the school year with a Junior-Senior banquet at the high school gym featuring solos by Betty Jo Carson and Margaret McFadden, violin by Maxine Brooks, and piano by Mary Ruth Rhodes. Baccalaureate was at the M E Church with Rev. Monkman and Rev. Melin assisting, followed by commencement at the Muse Theatre with speaker M F Mulvaney of Omaha.

Dorcas Society Meets in Church Parlors Friday

West Side notes report the Dorcas Society will gather in the church parlors Friday at 2 30 pm with Harriet Thelander and Francis Carlson hosting. D.A.R. Honors Osceola Students With History Medals

Bob Hansen earned the eighth grade D.A.R. Medal for the highest average in American History with a 97, the best in Osceola among medal recipients. Freshman Bob Mills received the Good Citizenship medal, chosen by faculty for representing good citizenship. Bob Mills also won the History award last year in eighth grade.

County orders removal of slot machines and punch boards

Acting on a county attorney directive, Sheriff Peterson ordered the removal of all slot machines and punch boards in the county. An estimate suggests Osceola alone spends about $800 monthly in nickels on these devices, with similar sums in other towns making it a costly indoor pastime.
