Osceola merchants plan a gala day on May 27 with penny hunts for children free motion pictures and a free pavement dance and band concert. The Osceola Community Club pays 5 cents per pound for old roosters cash or merchandise accepted. Bring roosters to cash them in and enjoy bargains advertised in the paper.
The Red Bros Motor Co long time Polk Chevrolet dealers plan to operate in Osceola. Harry Reeb will relocate after month start with charge of the Osceola business while his brother remains in Polk. Osceola welcomes the Reed Brothers, noted Polk merchants, to the local automotive field.
Local notes report Ray Raeder seriously ill with heart trouble and multiple visits by residents to Osceola. Birth announced for a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ball. A large bullhead stocking event at city park involves almost 3000 fish from the state department. Community gatherings include Bible class, auxiliary meetings, and a luncheon at the Campbell home.
Osceola hosts the Eighth Grade Promotion Exercises on Thursday May 25 at the Rivoli Theatre. The program includes invocations, piano solos, vocal groups from Districts 49 and 50, readings, musical recitals, and the presentation of diplomas by Supt. J. D. Huston.
Karl Thelen returns home from Shelby area with family business and visits. Ruby McMeekin finishes teaching term in Sargent Neb and heads to Shelby for summer break. J C McGrew and others plan Albin Wy visit relatives. A Sunday relatives dinner occurs at Glen Ingalls home in south Shelby. Various residents visit relatives and prepare summer arrangements in Shelby and surrounding towns.
Last Friday marked the closing day for area schools with an annual picnic at the Victor schoolhouse drawing a large crowd. Commencement at Victor featured five graduates Elmore Nelson Neal Prell Ralph Larson Raymond Hansen and Gene Carter with Beverly Hennings and Prof Carey addressing.
Commencement held at the Rivoli Theatre on May 18 with Dr. W H Morton of the University of Nebraska delivering the address. Jean Rutter and Matilda Amacher performed a violin duet and Joseph Fili powicz sang Courage, accompanied by Ruth Miller. Edith Wilson presented the Senior Class to Dr L LeMar who conferred diplomas. Supt W B Thompson announced awards and scholarships including Leona Pierson First Honor, Marjorie Inness Second Honor, and Perennial awards for top averages rewarded with a five dollar gold piece to Leona Pierson and a five dollar check to Claus Jimson. scholarship medals were given to Leona Pierson and Jeanetta Frasier. The bronze plate honors the four top class averages: Senior Leona Pierson, Junior June Koehler, Sophomore Jeanete Frasier, Freshman Maxine Johnson. Numerous students received scholarship letters including Virginia Torell, Lowise Smith, Leona Pierson, Marjerry Inners, Claus Johnson, Matilda Amacher, Marjorie Dunn, Jean Rutter, Alberta Anderson, June Koehler, Frances Boden, Rolland Randell, Jeanette Frasier, Erma Egelhoff, and Maxine Johnson.
The notice lists Wesley Chapel events including 11 am Sunday School next Sunday Bonnets and 2 pm memorial service. Families visiting or hosting gatherings include the Robert McMeekin Shelby group at Alvin Merrick and the E B Treadway family east of Osceola at L E Treadway’s home. About 70 attended a Burns grove Social Center picnic.
Miss Edith Wilson and Andrew Ii Nuquist married Sunday May 21 in Wessington Springs South Dakota officiated by Rev. Walter H Wilson. Both are Osceola High School teachers. bride a Central City High School and Penn College alumna. groom a Osceola High School and Doane College alum. He taught in China for four years after college. They plan to live in Osceola soon.
Stromsburg prepares for 1933 graduation week with May Fete activities at Buckley Park featuring inter-class sports, tennis, a baseball game, and a drum corps performance. The evening program at the high school includes sketches and Miss Nellie Marshall as May Queen. Baccalaureate is planned for Sunday. graduation exercises Thursday with speaker Mr. Lowell of Beatrice.
Omaha Bee News advertises a subscription plan offering seventy days of daily and Sunday issues for one dollar. It notes rural route delivery and no service in towns with carrier boys.
Memorial Sunday services will be held at 11 a m on Sunday May 28 at the Methodist Church in a union service. Decoration Day will be observed next Tuesday with a 10 am program at the Rivoli Theatre followed by grave decorations. Osceola Legion and ex service men urged to meet at 9 30 am for a 10 am start.
Last Wednesday an outdoor program by kindergartners through eighth graders featured songs from each grade and performances by the Glee Clubs, Rhythm Band and school groups drawing a large audience. Wednesday evening the high school presented an outdoor concert with Girls and Boys Glee Clubs, orchestra, band and a duet, praising Miss Miller and her pupils for a splendid year.
Local dealer Roy Parks warns warm weather and holiday miles hasten tire wear, risking blowouts and punctures. He urges motorists to install new rubber now for safer, cheaper travels and offers a free weekly tire check and inflation inspection at Parks Service Station.
Co. W Watkins state extension sent Polk county farmer names and numbers who ordered trees under the Clarke McNary act this spring to County Agent Kelly at Osceola. 3100 Chinese elm led orders, Austrian pine 1100, with ten other kinds making up the total of 8000 seedlings costing farmers one dollar to cover packing and shipping.
In Shelby on May 21 John Roseberry celebrated his 77th birthday with 35 relatives gathering at the Rosenberry home in Stelfox then traveling to Pawnee Park in Columbus. A basket dinner preceded a large cake with 77 candles. Seventeen grandchildren and one great grandchild were among attendees.
Rev Theo Ramsey of Stromsburg leads a week long series of Bible lectures at St Pauls Lutheran Church beginning Tuesday evening and ending Sunday June 4. Each talk uses a miniature Tabernacle model to explain materials furnishings and lessons. Scheduled topics include The Collection Of Materials For The Building Of The Tabernacle The Ark Of The Covenant The Furnishings Of The Holy Place The Curtains And Coverings The Structure Of The Tabernacle And Its Message And Gods Way To Man
Fairview residents attend visits with friends and relatives in Beatrice and Fairbury while a Beatrice visitor returns home with her child. Riverside school closes for a Friday picnic. Columbus guests dine with the Dake family as visits continue among Stromsburg and Rockford residents. Blanche Heinemeyer leaves for Rockford after a stay in California.
The St. Andrews event at Fell ers Hall included the three act play Safety First, two Phyllis Hastert tap dances, two readings by Adolph Kresha Jr, Edith Bernt piano solos, and Art Derrick's orchestra. About $50 was raised for the church. Local residents Frances Zeleny and Jerry Zeleny of Schuyler, Anton Petrochelcek of Prague, visited the Bernt family.
The Osceola High School staff was reelected by the school board last Wednesday. Board figures show operating costs for the coming year will drop about 20 percent, with teachers bearing most of the savings. Finances remain strong with no warrants needed and no reduction in high standards or course access.
Lincoln Telephone and Telegraph Company presented an electrical exhibition at the high school auditorium last Tuesday afternoon. Engineer B C Burden and R H Stebbings demonstrated various appliances including narrow casting and photo electric cell applications such as alarms signals and light based sensing. The highlight was a mechanical man operated by a telephone transmitter voice.
Miss Mary Rothermel and Henry H. Strickland were married Saturday at two at Elm Park Methodist parsonage with Rev. Victor West officiating. The bride wore rose beige silk crepe and carried Johanna Hill roses. After a short motor trip the couple will reside in Lincoln. Strickland and Rothermel both graduated from the University of Nebraska.
County agents report Polk County 4 H enrollment remains average for winter and spring sessions. Nine agricultural clubs totaling 87 projects set the benchmark for the past two years. Girls clubs are forming for summer and may surpass boys, after 97 girls enrolled last year. Application blanks and circulars are available at the Osceola office.
The church envisions a taxed seating capacity for a Sunday Memorial service. It will be a union service of all churches with 11 o clock worship, 10 o clock Sunday School, and Epworth League at 7. The evening worship details remain to be announced.
Ford of Illinois has spent a week with relatives and friends on the valley after returning from a six month vacation in California.
