Polk County War Widows Honored During 7th War Loan Drive

Five Polk County World War II widows are saluted during the 7th War Loan Drive. They are Mrs Esther Coolen Anderson Stromsburg Mrs Irene Thesing Hendren Stromsburg Mrs Frances Toline Freeman Stromsburg Mrs Kathryn Huston Mueller Osceola and Mrs Frances Schnasse Denery Osceola. Their husbands died in action or accidents in 1944 and 1945. The plea urges citizens to invest in bonds and support the war effort.

Benson Golden Wedding Celebrated in Community Forty-Eight Years at Home

Mr and Mrs Willard J Benson marked fifty years of marriage with a May 9 1995 ceremony at the J W Benson home and an Open House May 13 for more than one hundred guests. The event featured a three tier wedding cake, rhubarb pie, gift diamonds, and performances by grandchildren and local entertainers.

Senator Wherry pins Purple Heart on wounded corporal

Mrs. Neal McBeth of Stromsburg received a letter from Senator Kenneth S. Wherry after a continent tour of prison camps and hospitals. In Paris hospital Wherry wrote he pinned the Purple Heart on Cpl Neal McBeth for battle wounds from Remagen. Sgt Raymond Grossnicklaus, on furlough from Camp Crowder, Missouri, visited his parents at Shelby.

Hastings families hear liberated son and homeward Navy airman

Mr and Mrs R N Hastings learn their son Pvt Hastings has been liberated after his capture in the Berlin fighting. Mr and Mrs Clair Willits are notified their son Ralph Willits S1c is returning on leave from Alameda Naval Air Station California.

Polk County Soldier Liberated From German Prison Camp

A Polk County man, Lt. Terry Messing, has been reported liberated from a German prisoner of war camp after being captured in the latter part of the previous year. He is identified as a county resident and Army officer.

Nineteen Osceola Seniors Receive Diplomas

At the Muse Theatre last Thursday nine teen Osceola seniors received diplomas. M. C. Lefler, superintendent of Lincoln schools, gave the address. James Chantry won the University of Nebraska Regent's scholarship plus a 3.00 Commercial Club prize. Bernard Gissler earned the 2.00 prize for second high. Helen Wieseman and Darlene Wisely won scholarships to state normal schools and Nebraska Church Schools, with both girls receiving P. D. awards for high ranking seniors.

Memorial of Pvt Edgar Backlund Killed in Italy

Pvt Edgar Backlund of Springfield Ohio was killed in Italy on April 19 after a heavy flank attack. He had served since June 1944 and went overseas in November 1944, entering combat in January 1945. He earned the Combat Infantryman Badge after a raid into no man's land that yielded five prisoners and six Germans killed. He is survived by his mother Mrs Mabel F Backlund of Kearney Nebraska two brothers Merle of Kearney and Ens Burdette Backlund disbursing officer on the US S San Diego in the Pacific one sister Mrs Jeanne Peterson a brother in law and two nephews of Lincoln. He was born near Stromsboro and graduated Osceola High School in 1934 and worked in Osceola prior to moving to California and later Springfield Ohio and Kansas before enlisting.

Mrs Guy Ball Laid To Rest In Osceola Cemetery

Nettie Malek Ball born August 7 1895 in Elkhorn Nebraska died last Tuesday after a hospital stay. She married Guy Ball on October 11 1920 and is survived by her husband seven children and three sisters. Funeral services were held Friday with Rev G A Randall officiating and burial in Osceola cemetery.

County Extension News Highlights 4-H Club Activities

The All American 4-H Pure Seed and Weed Club met May 16 at the Earl Watts home with new members Glen and Burton Brazee. Weed identification and county fair exhibit planning were discussed. Ansel Frederickson's High Prairie Pure Seed and Weed Club met May 17 at Myron Ostrander's, focusing on weed IDs and member collection plans. The 4-H Tractor Club met May 18 in the Extension Office, covering fuels and temperatures and lubrication with possible tractor demos next.
