Donald Kennedy, son of Mrs. Elizabeth Kennedy, joined the army in April 1943 at 19. He completed training, became a qualified gliderman and parachutist, saw action in France Belgium and Luxembourg, and is now in Germany.
A single ring ceremony at First Methodist Church in Taylor Texas united Miss Anna Louise Nelson and Captain Morris W Engelhardt in marriage. Reception at the bride’s parents home followed, with a wedding trip to Corpus Christi and Victoria. They will reside in Fort Worth where the groom is stationed at the Army air field.
Pvt Richard Hiemer transfers from Camp Maxey Texas to Fort Frances Warren Wyoming joining the Service Command. Families, friends, and relatives share visits and leave days with servicemen including Art Nelson S2c and Albert Krumbach 1c. Local residents Dewey Anderson, Clarence Filsinger, and others are noted visiting at area homes and gatherings in Gresham and surrounding towns.
Stromsburg items note Kenneth Lofgren FBI special agent heading to Detroit for transfer while wife and son travel via Chicago. Several local residents host visitors from Ft. Morgan Colorado Sundl Nebraska and Julesburg Colorado.
Mr and Mrs Gilbert Johnson received a letter reporting their son Eugene has been liberated from a German prison camp and is safe. He was previously listed as missing by the War Department and expects to be returned to the United States soon.
District 18 residents and families visited friends and relatives around Bellwood Columbus Shelby Monroe and surrounding areas. Names include Ronnie Jacobs Marjory Camp Katherine Dunn Julia Enyeart Frances Camp and Donna Marie with hosts Mr and Mrs Enyeart Benda and Sullivan families among others.
Mrs Ida Ferris of Osceola visits son Wm Ferris and stays several days. Annetta Reed and William Gregg wed at the Methodist parsonage with Rev Hamilton officiating. They plan a farm home near Central City. Mrs Calvin Gertsch and sons visit in Rayner Carlson home. Mrs Sam Cadwell ill with sciatic rheumatism. Mrs Cliff Johnston hosts a shower for bride Mrs Ted Swanson. Laura Meacham and Heinemer guests join Ida Lohr birthday gathering in Grand Island. John Fintel and daughter visit relatives in Utica.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Kahler and others visited the Bol home Sunday with extended family in Alda Clarks and Stromsburg. Miss Rena Mae Willits had a tonsil operation at Stromsburg hospital. Local families hosted weekend guests and neighbors attended gatherings at the Larson and Willits homes.
State FSA director Lynn R. Leonard announced that rural rehabilitation loans repaid in nine months ending April 1 totaled 2,542,227 with 481,620 in interest. Polk County saw 29 families repay, totaling 58,204.45, while 1,619,063 was loaned to family-type operators. total active FSA loans in Nebraska reached 6,718.

Raymond Kepner had major surgery last week and expects to return home Wednesday. Ansel Fredrickson near Stromsburg had major surgery Friday and is progressing. Hazel Johnson, night operator, had major surgery last Tuesday and is improving. Donald Schmoker had an emergency appendectomy Wednesday and will return home today. Bobby Peterson, son of Mr and Mrs. Ronal Peterson, had major surgery Monday. Robert Nuquist had tonsils removed last week. Emma Person of Stromsburg was a medical patient the past week. Louis Hoy of Silver Creek is a medical patient after several blood transfusions. Mrs Shaw of Shelby had blood transfusions after entering Tuesday. Mrs Henry Sandell of Stromsburg had surgery Tuesday morning. Jack Foster, recently operated on, returned home last week as did John Tomasovicz of Shelby. Mrs Tony Tworek underwent surgery last Thursday.
Dedication services for the new service flag were postponed due to rain and rescheduled for next Sunday. Local 573 FECU will meet Friday evening, June 8. Raymond Hanson MAM 2-c left Sunday after a month with the Hansons. Albert Krumbach RM 3-c was home on leave last week and called on the Abolts. PC Krumbach has visited many Pacific ports.

Dorothy Gondringer shares letters from her brother Eugene Gondringer recently freed from a German camp. He describes retreating Germans reaching American lines, meeting U S and Russian troops, and a reunion with old fellows. He notes transport plans via Hannover to Le Havre and homeward anticipation.
The Wesley Chapel School closed Sunday for a Social Center event that included a picnic. Miss Margaret Anne Reed will resume teaching this fall. Mrs. Arthur Martin and family moved from Florida as her husband transfers to Los Angeles.
The Polk County Soil Conservation District reports progress with 25 farms surveyed for preliminary plans and 15 farms moving to mapping and practice application. Contour mapping covers 460 acres, land leveling 75 acres, irrigation layout 200 acres, and terraces 1% miles. Weather has slowed field work this spring, prompting early planning of crop rotations for next year’s development.
Darrell Branz aged 10 son of Mr and Mrs Ernest Branz and Donald Sack aged 11 son of Mrs Jean Sack of Gresham drowned Friday when their boat capsized on a small lake south of Gresham. Rescuers arrived 30 minutes later. Ernest Brant recovered Darrells body and Art Sperruter brought Donald to shore. A York hospital resuscitator failed to revive them. Darrell is survived by his parents sister and brother Donald by his mother two sisters and one brother.
The G M C 4 H Livestock Club met at Nels Pauls home on May 23 with members listed. A sheep, swine and beef judging demo is set for June 10 at 2 pm at Einfted Peterson farm. Shelby 4 H Pure Seed and Weed Club met May 25 to judge oats and discuss weed seed.
