A two part piece presents a satire about a ragged elderly patient named OHS examined by a Nebraska doctor and a Wisconsin newspaper editorial defending editorial inquiry. The satire critiques aging and retirement pressures while the editorial argues editors seek thoughtful engagement over certainty.
Jane Odgers of Troop 326 earned the God and Community award at First United Methodist Church morning service. The tribute recognizes commitment to church knowledge and service including Bible study Christian history witness fellowship and 90 hours of service over a year.
Sally McCoy and Cindy Nahrstedt will attend the 1971 All-State Fine Arts program for high school students in Lincoln from June 12 to July 1. Sally studies art including drawing and sculpture while Cindy pursues music with ensembles. John Moran notes 252 have registered but space remains. applications are at the high school or via the All-State Office at the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
Osceola's track team earned four state berths at Columbus Lakeview district meet on May 14. Cal Coffin qualified in the 220 yard dash and 440, and joined the 880 relay with Jim Carlson, Jim Green, and Tom Youngdahl, while Green placed second in the 880 to also reach state. Borouch added a fourth in the mile, Gissler faltered in the finals, and Boden wrestled with a sore back as Osceola tied for fourth with 24 points. state finals set for Friday and Saturday at Kearney.
May 14 services and burial for Clarence Nahrstedt were held at Trinity United Methodist Church Madison with grandsons as pallbearers. He died at the Madison Rest Home at 75 years old leaving wife two sons Dale Osceola Bert Madison and two daughters Mrs Boyd Russell Pine Bluffs Wyoming and Mrs Gerald Radant Madison along with 13 grandchildren.
Osceola shifts Old Times Days to June 29 and 30 with booths planned around the square. Activities include Kid's Parade, Children's games, Soap Box Derby, Little Miss Contest, Teen Dance by The Rumbles, Miniature Train, Adult Old Time Parade, Horseshoe Pitching, Water Fight, Square Dance, and prize drawings.
Navy Airman Edward J. Gavlik, son of Mrs. Stasia Poprocki of Silver Creek Neb, is aboard USS Forrestal participating in NATO Dawn Patrol 71 in the Mediterranean. The exercise involves 60 ships and 300 aircraft from the US and allied nations testing air strikes, ASW, air defense, surveillance, and amphibious ops. The Old Time Firemen's dinner is set for 6:30 PM Thursday May 27 at the Fire Hall with invites to former and current firemen.
Lutheran Women hosted a Mother-Daughter Banquet at St Pauls Lutheran Church on May 12 in the social room. Janis Peterson toasted mothers with her mother Mrs Milton Peterson delivering the response, as Jolly Johnsons and Rickey Johnson provided music.
Mrs Tindall was initiated into Phi Theta Kappa the national junior college honorary at Platte College Student Center on Saturday May 15. Present for the initiation were her mother Mrs Bill Elkhorn and her daughter Peggy Tindall.
About 565 dollars has been raised for Osceola Polk County Recreation Grounds tree planting. Approximately 50 trees are in the ground with more to come, funding larger trees water system and hose. Donors include Wunderlich Mills Mills Georgeau Lees Ryan Cornish Badertscher Walgren Kepner Beebe Anderson Mangelsen Dinsdale Pope. An additional 500 dollars is needed to finish the project. Contributions may be sent to Dean Henricksen at First National Bank of Osceola.
Osceola blanked Genoa 9-0 in six-hit win at the improved Osceola ballpark Sunday. Batteries for Osceola were Prokop Hegi and Grossnicklaus. Genoa’s Raemaker Jacobi and Anderson. Local improvements praised by team and spectators.
Al Stroup OHS band coach and history teacher was elected president at the Band Parents meeting after the band concert. Other officers named were Huck Rowan as vice president Allan Kresha as secretary and Ruth Lux as news reporter. The gathering was held in the auditorium.
Marsha Nyberg, daughter of the Phil Nybergs of Osceola, named feature editor of The Midland for the first term of 1971 72. Joyce Gissler, daughter of the Bert Gisslers and Midland freshman, chosen on campus editor alongside Diane Hebda of Fullerton.
Last week's downpour paused field operations with only a few dry fields by Friday and scattered work resuming Saturday. Agent Lynn Jones notes calf problems among cow calves and higher calf scour this spring due to wet weather. Corn planting remains at 60 percent.
The Record requests news items for the June 3 edition to be submitted by May 27 28 weekend due to Memorial Day on May 31. Advertisers will be visited on May 28.
Osceola finished fifth with 22.6 points at the Columbus Lakeview meet held May 13. John Meister won the 100 and 60 yard dashes with Mitch Coffin and teammates placing in the 440 relay, while Glasgow and Carlstrom set conference records in high and long jumps. Gary Workman directed the meet as St Edward, Polk, Stromsburg, Clarks, Osceola, Silver Creek, Palmer, and Genoa teams competed.
Fenner Park in Grand Island hosted the 34th annual Nebraska State Fire School for volunteers. Osceola firefighters Jim Lewis Stan Van Hoosen Don Anderson Leon Draeger and Charles Roberts attended the Sunday session featuring a special fire suppression demonstration.
Eleven seventh and eighth graders from Polk County earned prizes ranging from $10 to $1 for winning posters in the 1971 Polk County Soil Conservation Poster Contest. The event, a successor to Conservation Day in April, was sponsored county wide by the Soil and Water Conservation District, County Superintendent, County Extension Service and the County Soil and Conservation Service. Winners announced Monday May 17 include Margie Lux blue group Rachel Boden and Julie Carson red group Gayle Neu jahr Dorothy Bouska Stromsburg and Doug Peterson white group Douglas Draeger Melody Marak Stromsburg Lana Bills Polk Daryle Nelson Susie Bryan pink group.
S Eikenhorst son of the Eikenhorst family of Osceola is among 130 candidates for Bachelor of Science at Kearney State College. Spring Commencement will be at Kearney on Thursday May 27. Other degree candidates include Annette Burger Silver Creek for BA in Education Richard Alt Shelby for BS in Education Carolyn Kealiher Polk for BS in Education and D Anthony Douglas Clarks for BS.
Senior Girl Scouts of Osceola troop 290 hosted the Prairie Hills Council Senior Planning Board meeting. The final briefing for the trip to Cuernavaca and Mexico City was completed. Leaders and scouts from Omaha departing June 2 include Jackie Smith Becky McDonald Nancy McDonald and Anne Davis as assistant leader.
Leon Draeger was elected president of the Osceola Lions Club at the May 10 meeting. New officers include Mert Flodman 1st VP Joe Roberts 2nd VP Jim Wunderlich 3rd VP Gene Sterup secretary treasurer Chris Dahmke tail twister and Lynn Jones lion tamer. They take over July 1.
Robin Walgren placed second in the District Soil and Water Conservation Speech Contest on May 15 at Geneva. The Osceola School eighth grader competed against juniors and seniors. a junior from Ohiowa won and advances to state.

Nebraska Wesleyan University President Dr Vance D Rogers will address Osceola High School's 1971 graduating class on May 20 at 8 p m in the auditorium. Valedictorian Robert Gissler and Salutatorian Andy Kresha will speak. Msgr L F Obrist of St Vincent Catholic Church Osceola delivered the baccalaureate sermon Sunday evening May 16 at the OHS Auditorium. Music by the Girls Glee Club and Mixed Chorus followed. Benediction by Rev Paul Konig of St Paul Lutheran Church. CHANGE OF RESIDENCE The Gary Wahl family moved to Floyd West farm home northeast of Osceola near Osceola.
