Alumni history book printed as year ends

The Record reports completion of printing on the alumni association history book with thanks to Ruth Lux Bert Gissler and other volunteers though the work is already dated by a new mile record set by Charles Roberts the day after printing. Polk County Backway Projects Planned for Biennium

State highway plans for Polk County include two projects on Highway 39 south of Silver Creek. One project covers grading, structures, and bituminous resurfacing of six miles at an estimated $360,000. The other includes grading structures and graveling on Highway 30S from three miles north, estimated at $140,000.

Osceola girl wins third annual Polk County essay contest

Lynelle Fredrickson of Rt. 1 Osceola winner of the third annual essay contest sponsored by Polk County Rural Public Power District. She earns a Washington tour with Lincoln on June 10 to June 17. Second place goes to Forrest Kinzli of Rt. 2 Columbus, who wins a $25 government bond.

Gren H Krohn reports rainfall for the week ending Saturday at trace. Surface moisture is adequate but subsoil moisture is short. Winter wheat is in good condition. Corn planting is 75 percent complete. Pasture and range feed are below average. Cool weather slows spring growth. pasture growth remains slow and inadequate. Main farm work is corn planting.

Young people in the four-county area served by the Columbus Nebraska Division of Employment are urged to register with the volunteer farm representative in their community. Dry spring spurs soil and water conservation in Polk County

A dry spring boosted conservation work in Polk County with many farmers completing land leveling irrigation pits and windbreak planting. Poppy Day Observance Promoted By Osceola Auxiliary

American Legion Auxiliary urges Osceola residents to wear Memorial Poppies on Pop py Day Saturday May 20. Members and cooperating groups will distribute poppies at numerous spots all day to honor war dead and raise funds for rehabilitation and child welfare programs.

Osceola Plans Five Day Centennial Celebration Events

Osceola to mark Nebraska Centenary with events from May 28 to June 1. Grand opening of Polk County Museum at 2:30 p.m. May 28 in the former Governor John Mickey home, with Mickey relatives present and a June 1 dedication. Activities include alumni banquet, memorial day program, community play, Old Times Day parade, carnival, historical marker dedication, teen dance, street dancing, autographed basketballs, auctions for museum funds, and a quilt show plus various exhibits and crafts.

Chief Osceola to Be Revealed at Centennial Parade

The 1967 Centennial Chief Osceola and his Princess will be revealed June 1 at the Old Times Day Parade. A native son and daughter, who have served the community, will receive the honors. Attendees of the Osceola Community Play May 31 can help select the couple. candidates will be named in next week's Record.

Osceola sends three to state track with district mile record

Osceola high school will send three boys to the state class C track and field events at Kearney this week. Charles Roberts won the district mile run with a school record 4:44.0. Gregg Urban took the shot put at 50 feet 4 inches. Mike Simonsen was second in the discus at 129 feet 9 inches. Other placers not going to state included Jack Cerny in the broad jump third place and local residents Mr and Mrs Everett Powell and Roy Hurd of Stromsburg attending a Barstow California wedding reception for H Powell’s brother and wife. The Powell couple, who married April 15, 1917, have lived in California since 1939.
