Osceola prepares to end the school year with a final day of classes followed by an all school community picnic. The event marks the culmination of weeks of school closing activities drawing the community and school together before vacation.

A town picnic is planned for Friday May 18 beginning 10 30 A M with gatherings at the school building. Transportation will be arranged for those without a ride. Activities include numerous games, races, and contests with over 60 prizes donated by city merchants.
A long, garbled list centers on names connected to Lower 7 Ranch and a traveling office detaching at the foot of Upper 7 trail. Mentions include Jonah Hawkins, Irene Dixon, Octavia Brent, Mary Hlawkins, and several others in varied roles from sheriff to manager. Time is stated as The Present in an old ranch setting.
The Baccalaureate service on Sunday May 13 1923 at 8 PM was presided by Rev Adolf Serenius with a mixed quartet and Girls Glee Club. The congregation heard scripture readings prayers hymns and a sermon titled The Crowning Grace of Character by Rev Thes E Barr. Linus Heald led the processional and recessional as the class passed out.
The Class Play The Girl from Upper Seven wrapped up the school year at the Auditorium with a large cast delivering remarkable performances. A packed house attended Thursday with Friday hindered by bad weather. Edward Fielding and Douglas Mason are among the listed characters.
Cities entered produced stronger marks than Class 1 schools. If Mac had been entered in Class 1 he would have won gold, but he was listed in Class 2. A young western thrower heaved the iron ball farther than Mac, showcasing regional depth.
Helen Frizzell nine year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Frizzell sustained two broken foot bones Saturday evening. She was on a running board near a car when it started and it is believed her foot was caught between the board and the car.
Mrs. Chas. Bunn of the northwest city section broke both wrists in a late Saturday night fall down the stairs at her home. She misjudged the step and is reported resting easily and doing well.
Mrs O E Mickey was elected Grand Treasurer of the Eastern Star at Grand Lodge in Lincoln last week. Friends congratulate the Osceola official on the preferment and note her hard work and keen interest in the Order's advancement.
At G E Currens farm west of Shelby a plowing bee with twenty one neighbors used ninety six horses to plow fifty acres in under a day. The Currens have been tested by the death of their son from appendicitis and neighbors help in a time of need.
The May Festival at the high school auditorium drew a large audience. Part one featured numbers by the school orchestra and choirs including America On the Hike They All Love Jack and Desert Caravan. Part two showcased the Grade School Festival Chorus Libretto with selections like Old South.
Osceola hosts a Decoration Day program with American Legion and unions inviting all to honor veterans. Ex soldiers parade from G A R Hall at 2 00 pm, program at 2 30 pm includes invocation reading of orders Lincoln Gettysburg Address and Star Spangled Banner. Burial ceremonies follow at Osceola cemetery. Memorial Sunday services at M E church 11 am with sermon by Rev W W Hull. uniforms specified as regulation OD with blouses.
The Nebraska Gas and Electric Co reimbursed Manhattan Oil Co for about 1200 gallons of gasoline spilled in railroad yards when machinery ran backward as Manhattan tried to pump oil from a car. The settlement followed a peculiar, lengthy adjustment and is now satisfactory.
Polk county Boys and Girls Club Week runs May 28 to June 2. Twelve members win a free trip to Lincoln to visit sites of interest. Winners include Asa Smith, Willie Burritt, Carl Weiser, Hazell McMeekin, Johnnie Ingalls, Naomi Tockey, Esther Blevins, Opal Saymour, Waldiee Quick, Homer Ingalls, Paul Tockey, Harold Ingalls. County Agent Adair will accompany the expedition.
The program scheduled for last Friday at Swede Home hall was postponed and will be held tomorrow night May 18. It features Lassie O Mine vocal solo In The Gloaming instrumental solo Male Chorus and readings by Arthur Cederberg with various performers including C W Miller Ernest Martin Rudolph Sandine Petrus Nelson Carl E Cederberg and choral numbers by the Cederberg group.
Liberty Clark returned home Saturday night after a week visiting his former haunts in Wisconsin including Mineral Point Platteville and Mifflin. Born at Mineral Point 69 years ago he moved to Polk County about fourteen and has lived there longer than anyone else on record. He notes the towns in that region have not grown much and enjoyed gathering information during his trip.
The May Day Fete was delayed a day due to weather and held yesterday afternoon at the city park with good turnout. Wilma Pike crowned May Queen as pupils and teachers showcased numerous dances and performances including the Apple Blossom Dance, King Tut’s Dance, Spanish Dance, and May Pole winding.
Herman McNeal of Osceola placed second in the state high school track meet at Lincoln with a 42 feet 10 inch shot put. He trailed the Class 1 leader by nearly three feet, underscoring the strength of smaller schools in Class 2.
The Wayland farm bureau unit met at Mrs. Clara Thomas's home on Friday afternoon May 11 with good attendance despite rain. Duriop-same sewing named Greenwood Ged and Mrs Otis Hawley as project leaders. The group invites all girls and mothers to a May 29 meeting at Mrs Hawley's home for a get together to finish plans.
Tom Mills arrived in the city on Saturday from Denver where he had been on official business and visited Osceola relatives before continuing to Washington.
Teachers examinations will be held at Osceola on May 25 26 June 29 30 and Aug 3 4. The program lists Friday forenoon with Algebra Civils Arithmetic Penmanship Trigonometry Chemistry and Friday afternoon with Botany Agriculture Orthography Drawing Reading English and American Literature Zoology and General History. Saturday forenoon covers Geometry Theory and Art Grammar Physiology English Composition Physics and Psychology. J D Heston Co Supt.
F H Anderson holds the club medal as high scorer from last Thursday at the fair grounds. Fred Sehuman challenges him and the dispute will be settled at the weekly meeting tonight. The club’s format keeps the medal with the high scorer for a week then defends it in open competition if held for a month.
Local society column reports marriages of Fred D. Huggler to Shelby Rose Schneider and Shelby Louis J. Robak to Valaria G. Micek with brief notices of ceremonial details and families.
Local residents travel for business and social visits including Henry Olson returning from Omaha with cattle and hog shipments and Dr. Liebee attending a dental convention in Lincoln. A May 18 commencement address by Charles Taylor of Lincoln is planned at the Baptist church.
Gust A. Peterson bought the A Q O Monson residence from C A Olson and redeveloped it into a modern home with a front veranda and four pillars. J F Jackson supervised remodeling. the house, one of Osceola’s oldest residence sites, has seen prior owners including Hattie Morrill and A O Monson. Peterson plans to reside on his nearby stock farm and may occupy soon.
A parade of residents and guests fills the week with travel to Omaha Lincoln Stromsburg and Central City. Notables include H M McGuffin editor of Pork Progress. Mrs BE Walrath returning from California. Dr C L LeMar at Lincoln for a state medical convention. and families hosting relatives from Stromsburg Beulah and Columbus.
