Osceola School District Plans Six Week Summer Program

The Osceola Board of Education approved a six week summer program from June 9 to July 18 funded by a federal grant. Classes run Monday through Friday from 8 30 a m to 11 30 a m with reading language arts and physical education. Instructors include Mrs Orpha Fjell Mrs Francis Inness Mrs Irene Burritt Mrs Wilmz Gondringer Mrs Nancy Gordon and Don Bartek directed by Ken Sipes.

County Museum Reopens for Season on Sundays

Polk County Museum will resume Sunday hours beginning May 18 and stay open each Sunday. Additional open dates include May 29 alumni banquet day and Memorial Day May 30 with events continuing after the parade May 31.

Osceola adopts plans for a large Hiway directory sign

The Osceola Chamber backs a two sided electric directory sign atop a brick planter in Osceola. The Osceola Record donates 100 dollars toward construction and the First National Bank adds another 100 dollars. Lions Club will direct pancake feed proceeds to the fund. The sign will be 10 by 8 feet and show OSCEOLA with rent space for notices and advertisements.

Osceola High to Hear Vernon L. Taylor’s Address

Dr. Vernon L. Taylor, Dean of Faculty at Platte College Columbus Nebraska, will deliver the Osceola High School 1969 commencement address titled Welcome to Adventure. The program at the auditorium on Thursday May 22 begins at 8:00 p.m. Taylor holds a Ph D from Northwestern University and has taught at Central Missouri State National College Northwestern University and the Idaho Public School System.

The Osceola Community Action Team OCAT convened its first official meeting on May 6 under the city council and chamber of commerce. About 15 representatives from 40 groups like Knights of Columbus LCW and Scouts discussed 1968 activities and 1969 plans for town and rural area improvements.

Osceola Class of 1969 Trips to Chicago by Train

The Osceola High School senior class of 1969 left Friday after school, 32 students with sponsors Kenneth Sipes and Lawrence Theis. After a 7:55 am train from Omaha they toured Chicago under rain in 40 degree weather visiting Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium, Lake Michigan boat ride, Museum of Science and Industry, slum district, Naval Pier and China Town. Joey Fjell fell ill and returned home. students slept on the return trip and welcomed a peaceful Sunday back home.

Osceola residents are asked to note a street numbering error on South Sherman Grant and Ohio Streets and move house numbers up by 100. The Lions plan to install street planter boxes around the Square with plants provided. merchants are urged to water fertilize and weed boxes daily weekly this summer.

Drowning of 18-Year-Old Doug Gissler at Johnson Lake

Douglas Gissler, 18, Central City, died Monday at Johnson Lake during the senior class trip. He was alone in a canoe when the accident occurred amid choppy waters. He had been named an alternate to the U S Naval Academy. Funeral services are set for May 15 at Grace Lutheran Central City with burial in Osceola. Survivors include uncles Bert and Bernie Gissler and grandparents Mr and Mrs Rudolph Gissler.
