Town volunteers and property owners push a cleanup drive with Fred Bond clearing five lots and Lee Schroeder removing over 25 junk cars. Other small upgrades include removing year round Christmas lights and new advertising signs as Memorial Day nears.
Lee Schroeder, a seven year Osceola employee and Street and Water Commissioner, resigns effective May 16 to join Allis Chalmers in Chandler Arizona. He will work as a mechanical technician at the Chalmers Construction Equipment Proving Grounds starting May 19. His wife Barbara and two children will move with him. Schroeder came to Osceola in 1959 from Ulysses.
William Wolfe Post No 91 will sponsor two Little Six League teams with Osceola Polk Shelby Gresham Benedict and Waco. Pony Team ages 12 and 13 play five inning games Sunday double headers. Midget Team ages 14 to 16 play seven innings. First Pony practice May 10 at 2:00 p.m. Midget practice May 10 at 4:00 p.m. at the Fairgrounds diamond.
Pi the German Shepherd, a longtime favorite of The Record staff, visits in town staying with Kathy Howe's parents Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hill. The dog checks in at the office, greets old friends, and settles at the door, noting changes but enjoying continued welcome.
Members of the Lions Club and wives totaling 24 attended a dinner last Tuesday at St. Paul Lutherans Church. Mrs. Joe Hill prepared the meal. The group discussed placing flower boxes around the square and Old Times Day pancake feed plans. Bert Gissler showed slides from his Hawaii trip.
Under director Marcella Konig the Osceola Astronauts grades 1 2 3 4 perform a cap sule lift off to space on May 9 at 8 00 p m in the High School Auditorium Commander Kim Boden and Astronaut Rogena Mc Lain will inform the public about songs and dances from around the world Accompanist Carolyn Hanson assists the mission free performance May 9th
Seniors 62 or older and widows 60 or older with yearly earnings under 1680 may receive benefits for all months. Other months possible if earnings stay under 140 or no substantial self employment. Marie E Raeder claims representative from Lincoln will visit Osceola courthouse second floor Wednesday May 14 1969 9 00 to 11 30 a.m.
The 1969 Jr Sr Prom was held in the High School Auditorium with over 140 attendees. The Junior Class chose My Old Kentucky Home as a decorating theme turning the gym into a southern garden. The Oath Inc. provided music for the dance while pre dance banquet menus featured Southern fried chicken cotton balls Shortnin bread salad and dessert. Jerry Cerny Jr Class President opened the banquet program with a welcome and the Senior President Joe Fjell gave the response. Jerry Cerny led grace and a reading of the class prophecy and will followed by a closing remark from Lawrence Theis.
The Prairie Hills Girl Scout Council Cookie Sale Committee hosts a thank you and evaluation luncheon for neighborhood Cookie Chairmen at Columbus Country Club on May 13 at 10 o'clock. Ted Smith of Barry Biscuit Co Chicago will host. devices and sale procedures will be reviewed. Osceola chairwoman Mrs Everette Smith is named.
The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 91 will staff multiple Osceola locations on Friday May 9 offering Memorial Poppies and urging citizens to wear the red blossoms in honor of the nation’s war dead.
The Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben and the Nebraska Association of Fair Managers search for Nebraska Pioneer Farm Families with land owned by the same family for 100 years or more. Nomination deadline is June 1. honored families receive a walnut plaque an aluminum gate post marker and a framed citation.
Harold Davis, a ten and a half year service and line man at Consumers Public Power, resigns to launch Davis Electric in Osceola. He will begin operations May 15 offering commercial residential and farm wiring, repairs, and services from his home. The Davises have four children and eight years in Osceola, moving from York. Mrs. Davis works as a legal secretary with Norton & Norton. No replacement has been named for Davis's vacancy.
The annual Polk County Wildlife Club meeting at the Legion Club in Osceola elected Don Benda as president, Jack Tindall as vice president, and Dale Hiemer as secretary-treasurer. Board members include Robert Hrouda Norris Larson Lee Anderson Ralph Deland and others. Tickets sold by board members. both club pits open to fishermen for $5 per ticket this year only.
The calendar lists May activities in Shelby including PCEA dinner meeting on May 8 at 7 0, final pictures for Grades 1-4 on May 9 at 8 00, senior trip on May 10, district track meet on May 15 in Fremont, bus drivers exams, Hi School Spring Musical on May 16 at 8 00, Baccalaureate on May 18 at 8 00, commencement on May 22 at 8 00, 8th grade trip to Lincoln on May 26, Recognition Night and 8th Grade Graduation on May 27, report cards on May 28, and Alumni Banquet on May 29.
John W. Schott of Osceola accepted a plaque recognizing John F. Kennedy Council No. 5383 Knights of Columbus Shelby as Council of the Year in the under 200 enrollment class at the 69th annual State Knights of Columbus Convention in Lincoln Nebraska April 20 21. State Dinner drew over 500 attendees with speakers Bishop Pasang and Bishop Flavin. Delegates to the National Convention in New Haven Connecticut were chosen Leon Nicolas Shelby among seven.
Malia Michele Bryan was born April 9 in Minneapolis to Curtis Bryan and his wife. The newborn weighs 8 pounds 3 ounces and is welcomed by maternal grandmother Guildford Bryan.
Funeral services and burial were held Saturday afternoon at Polk for Clair Willits 84 who died April 30 at Annie Jeffrey Hospital after surgery. Survivors include four daughters Mrs Reynold Peterson and Mrs Walter Jones both of Osceola and two sons.
