May 14 marks the start of Commencement events with a Junior Senior Banquet in the high school gym from 3 to 5 pm open to the public. Sunday May 17 features the Baccalaureate Service at the Methodist Church followed by a May 21 Commencement at the Rivoli Theatre with student speakers and diploma awards.
The Senior Play Bless His Little Heart presented May 8 9 at the high school auditorium drew a large crowd Friday though rain reduced Saturday attendance. Birdalle Clark and Clayton Fredrickson led as temporary wife and husband with Goldie Johnson in Roman Senator makeup. Irma Hastings Grace Wilcox and Howard McDonald also starred. J Carl Bryant directed the production.
Mrs. Charlotte Iristrana nearly 82 suffers a broken arm and possible internal injuries after a hit and run near Eden Baptist Church as she walked home from services. Driver’s identity unknown. car swung wide to avoid her and struck the victim with its rear. She is cared for by Dr. C. L. Anderson at her daughter’s home. Her husband, G N Ekstrand, died in a similar crash five years ago.
Polk County men travelled to Omaha for the Republican State Convention at the Fontenelle Hotel. The group included Fred Strain C Guy Anderson Henry Morris Rolland Jones Otto Schaber Robert Imm Chas Newcomer C J Hultgren Fred A Anderson A L Hedblo om R L Ericson Petrus Nelson Herbert Flodman and others. Additionally many local residents made trips to Lincoln Grand Island and Omaha for family visits school events business and entertainment.
Esther Eileen Marshall of Stromsburg and George Herrmann Koehler of Osceola married on Sunday May 10 1936 in Belleville Kansas. Ceremony by the county probate judge. Lawrence Koehler brother of the groom attended. The bride is the youngest daughter of Mrs Emery Marshall and attended Stromsburg High School. The groom son of Mr and Mrs George J Koehler of Hayward California formerly of this city. Osceola High School graduate 1933. He formerly worked for Osceola Producer Transfer. They will reside in Osceola.
Miss Ethelyn Anderson a Kearney schools teacher visits Osceola on Friday en route to Omaha to attend a Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra concert. She is accompanied by fellow Kearney teachers Miss Kiva Rougek and Sarah Danielson.
About fifty five youths from Schuyler Cordova Raymond Grand Island and Benedict attended the Nebraska Association for Mimeographed Papers convention. The Mike staff and advisors Miss Dickinson and Mr. Johnson hosted the event with eight contests directed by Professor W Emerson Beck of Midland College. Winners included Betty Jo Carson Osceola in headline and sports writing, Irma Hastings in stencil cutting, Edith Salak Schuyler in editorial and feature writing, Elvin Lerager Cordova in newswriting, Raymond Rathjen Benedict in advertising makeup, and Arthur Schricker Grand Island in art.
The M. E. Church Ladies Aid met Friday afternoon. The treasurer reported a $250.00 cleaning fund and work will begin to redecorate the church on June first. A Mother's Day themed program featured a panel on the best period of a Mother's Life with several members participating. Mrs. Edgar Wisely led the discussion as Vera Peterson recited Mother's Hairpin and Leon Merrick sang Mother O Mine.
The Lt Richard Falley Chapter D A R held a May 11 1936 meeting at Mrs Etta Shaws to install new officers Regent Mrs W R Kepner Vice Regent Mrs P B Campbell Secretary Mrs Dewey Sigler Treasurer Mrs W E Thompson Historian Mrs W F Kepner Registrar Mrs W E Snider and Chaplain Mrs L R Israel.
The Wesley Chapel church group plans a Friday meeting to elect officers and share a pie. The Birthday meeting of the Women’s Foreign Missionary Society is moved to May 20 at Mrs. William Hope’s home. Residents report rain and a severe Thursday morning wind storm that scorched the Jarmin area. Local repairs crews have canvassed the Chapel neighborhood. Cemetery trustees include Harry Hewitt as president and Alonzo Merrick as treasurer with 32 years in that role.
Mr and Mrs August P Anderson were hosted for dinner at the Herman Anderson home, enjoying a social gathering in a local residence.
Shelby residents attend Ivy Day exercises and University events while local visitors return home. Rainfall totals reach 1.47 inches for the week. Births include Jerome Herman Cerny and the baby of Hershel Reisdorff. The Senior Class play Enter Henry Lochinvar and the Baccalaureate sermon precede Commencement with Supt. Gates as speaker.
A two day recreation school at the Methodist Church led by N W Gaines and Ralph Copenhaver drew 25 community leaders and nine Osceola High School girls. Attendees learned games stunts plays and songs for parties picnics and church events to apply in rural communities and churches. The event will become an annual farm bureau recognized training.
Miss Claire Yoesten and Dr. Harold Wieseman, both of Columbus, wed Tuesday morning May 12 in Omaha Nebraska. The bride works as a stenographer at Northwestern Power in Columbus. The groom, son of Mr and Mrs George Wieseman, graduated Osceola High School in 1928 and studied chiropody in Chicago before practicing in Columbus. A reception will be hosted by Mr and Mrs Wieseman Sunday at their valley home.
Rock Island Illinois guests include Mr and Mrs Paul Joy and baby daughter Mr and Mrs Jesse Stodghill and Mr and Mrs Eleazar McCormick They traveled from Rock Island to spend Mother's Day with Mr and Mrs Frank Joy and Mr and Mrs John McCormick and family arriving Friday morning and departing Sunday evening.
Osceola will mark Poppy Day on Saturday May 23 as poppies glow on the coats of remembering Americans in honor of World War dead. The Osceola Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary will offer the flowers on the streets to invite tribute and support for war victims through contributions.
A cast of 160 from Osceola School grades 1-8 will perform The Magic Beanstalk by Hubrich and Christopher at the High School Auditorium on May 18 and 19 at 8:00. Pirates villagers Dutch and Japanese dancers and engaging characters bring a varied program to the show.
The Victor Club schedules a postponer meeting for Tuesday May 19 at the home of Mrs. Dwight Newcomer. Fairview and Victor schools split a kitten ball game 10 to 4 with Victor advancing to County Field Day in Osceola Friday. The Fairview Victor PTA elected officers L M Albrecht president Dwight Newcomer vice president Ray Prell secretary treasurer. Victor school board hired L M Albrecht and Mary Burke for next term. Community notes list multiple visits and Mother's Day gatherings across Polk County and Stromsburg with several local residents mentioned.
Ansel Rodine of Polk pleaded guilty before Judge Hastings in Osceola district court on Tuesday and received a one year sentence in the state penitentiary for forgery. He was arrested last week and has been jailed in Osceola County.
Mrs. Mary Simpson of Omaha dies at her son's home Wednesday of last week. Former Stromsburg Polk resident, burial in Stromsburg Cemetery. Survived by son Merle of Omaha and two brothers Louis of California and Charles of Thedford. Funeral attendance list includes Polk residents and local officials. Community notes mention local meetings, car sales, Girl Reserves picnic, and social visits in Stromsburg and surrounding areas.
Sunday afternoon visitors gathered at Henry Lind home including Geo Phillips family Lawrence Lind and son Larry Carl Lind and family and Albert Carlson and family. Swede Home Ladies Aid met in church basement with hosts Mrs Oscar Johnson and Mrs Warther Oberg. Several households entertained or visited in the area including Flodman Adelson Johnson and Falk families with Johnson, Fredrickson and Chindgren names noted. A large crowd attended the High Prairie Senior Play despite bad weather. Pauline Kohl assists Joe Monson with household duties this week.
Nebraska 4-H Club Week at the University of Nebraska agriculture campus begins the first week in June. State club leader L I Frisbie announced a local leaders day on June 1 with speakers W H Brokaw Arthur George Ralph Copernhaver and George Round plus a conservation talk by J D Douglas and a color film of the last Tournament of the Roses. Local leaders staying for the evening will be entertained by the University 4-H Club. More than 200 members are registered indicating a possibly larger attendance. LaVina Swanson of Stromsburg is attending as Burlington Leadership Trip winner and Marie Ingalls of Shelby goes as guest of the Omaha Union Stock Yards Company.
Fairview residents report visits from Rev and Mrs Hendrickson of Berwyn and Rev and Mrs Maxcy plus Virgil McCormick. Ellen Maxcy struggles with mumps. Osceola and Stromsburg guests attend dinners and church events. Mrs Mina Buchta Mother's Day visit with Calmar Dunn family. Eleazer McCormick from Moline visits after surgery. Hurd family from Stromsburg hosts.
Polk County women Mary Cunningham Evelyn Scholz Oliver Scow and W H Houderscheidt will attend the Triennial Conference of Associated Country Women of the World in Washington D C. More than one hundred Nebraska women will join, leaving Omaha May 25 in three chartered buses and the rest by auto or train.
Mont Bond H L Bond 89 Polk County Civil War veteran died early yesterday at the Soldier's Home in Barker Nebraska. Survived by son O L Bond Hartington Nebraska. Wife Mrs Bond died in 1927. Funeral Friday at 2 30 PM at the Presbyterian Church with American Legion and IOOF in charge.
