Dorothy Watts, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Watts, was crowned Queen of the May at a May Day Festival held Tuesday afternoon on the District 37 school playground. The Rhythm Band provided music and folk dances for mothers visiting, then lunch followed in the schoolroom assisted by teacher Mrs. Clyde Smith and Mrs. Earl Watts.
County Superintendent Olive McBeth announces the eighth grade graduation will be held on Wednesday May 18 at 1 30 p m in the high school auditorium Seventy graduates will receive diplomas and their names will be published next week The program includes processional salutations band music solos duets and a diplomas presentation by Supt McBeth with a benediction and retiring of colors

Norton sells a 63 by 50 feet tract in NW SE 16-14. Cramer and Werner together with others convey N half of Lots 1 2 3 Block 1 Wilson's Addition Polk. W R Kepner and others quit claim to Robert L Mills for 150 by 20 feet in NW SE 16-14-2.

Selections include To A Wild Rose Cowboy Suite Holiday Serenade Folk Song Suite Indian Princess Crime Does Not Pay Entry of the Heralds Invercargill March Hollywood Serenade Kentucky Trotter La Mascarda Dry Bones Marcho Poco and more. Admission is 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for students.
Miss Gloria Ruth Shockey of Osceola and Bernard F. Cemper of Shelby wed May 7 1955 at the Shockey home. Judge L M Merrick officiated three o’clock ceremony. attendants included Mrs. George Johnston. best man George Johnston. Shockey graduate 1954. Cemper veteran of military service.
Polk County ASC announces 1956 wheat acreage allotments for farms with no wheat seed for grain in 1953 54 or 55. Write to local ASC committee, obtain blank forms, and file by July 15 1955. Updated corn acreage measurement cost rules apply to 1955 harvests. pay estimated cost to county treasurer.
Osceola volunteer firefighters have launched a public drive to raise about 1000 for an 800 gallon water tank mounted on a second hand truck. The aim is to improve rural fire protection by providing immediate water supply and reducing downtime for refills. Donations of 3 per family, with initial support from the Osceola Chamber of Commerce and Osceola Records.
The old Methodist Church was removed and footing trenches for the new structure are visible as D L Moffitt and crew begin basement walls. The church bought Osceola Lumber�s coal-bin site north of the lot for parking and facilities, fund raising stands at 55000, and Fritz Craig designed a modern building with dining room kitchen stage pastor study and assembly area. Completion eyed around early next year, weather permitting.
Victor V. Kearney 36 a former Osceola resident was found dead after a reported assault by four persons. Death resulted from head blows and hemorrhages. A brother Bull of Osceola spoke with him hours earlier. An inquest was planned by Bradley authorities.
Earl G. Harbert, longtime Osceola educator and Shelby native, died at his Sun Valley home in California after a heart attack. He taught as a high school custodian in Osceola for over ten years, left in 1942 with his wife and three daughters, later working for an Aircraft Corporation. Surviving sister is Mrs. Irene Timm of Osceola.
The religious vacation school for youth from St Andrew and St Vincent Churches runs May 23 to June 5. Children six and older are invited. kindergarteners are excluded unless six. Sisters Emerentia and Pachomia, from Milwaukee, join Father John Howe in leading sessions at St Vincent Church 8:15 to 12:00 and St Andrew Church 1:30 to 4:00 daily.
Funeral services were conducted at St. Pauls Lutheran Church for John Oscar Boden with interment in Osceola cemetery. Boden, 64, died Monday after a heart attack. he is survived by his widow and three daughters Mrs Rupert Carlson Mrs Ruth Eklund and Mrs Henry Buresh.
Osceola High School placed third at the district meet in Columbus last Friday. Jan Grossnicklaus won both the 120 yard high hurdles and the 180 yard low hurdles setting district records. The 880 yard relay team of Grossnicklaus Bernt Dinges and Mickey won, with Mickey also taking third in the 220 yard dash.
The senior class at OHS will observe end of year activities this weekend. Baccalaureate is Sunday at 8:00 p m in the High School auditorium with Rev Robert Johnson delivering the sermon. Commencement follows Monday May 16 at 8:00 p m with Dr Dale W Welch as speaker.
Mrs. Ross Richards chairs the Legion Auxiliary Poppy Day in Osceola with a very successful sale last Saturday. Funds support veterans rehabilitation, their families, and the Auxiliary's Child Welfare program, with thanks extended to the community for cooperation.
Billy Stauber a 13 year old Stromsburg resident was fatally injured Saturday May 7 in a bicycle car crash south of Stromsburg. Rev Orrin Skinner of Stockham Nebraska was driving the car. Stauber was thrown about 90 feet. Skinner and his wife were treated for minor injuries. Investigating officers included Trooper Arnold Lsee Sheriff Willard Cornell and County Attorney W H Norton. The boy was an eighth grade athlete with a strong basketball record. no inquest was planned. The Stauber family expresses deep sorrow.
Supt Clair W Walker announced the senior class top honors at OHS. Dixie Walgreen is valedictorian with a four year record, and Tomas Husak is salutatorian with a 95.5 average. Runnerup Husak posted a 92.7 average.
Osceola softball standings after week two show three teams at 2 0, two at 1 1, and two at 0 2. Top hitters include G Hobbs L Heimer R Johnson and B Gissler with averages from .444 to .625 as Watts and Siglers edge Maleks 10 8 and 5 4 in recent games.
