Osceola Schools Close Year With Diplomas and Wins

Osceola Schools near year end with thirty diplomas. The varsity basketball team won the Polk County Championship while the second team earned the Goldenrod award. Gyerl’s softball was undefeated and football posted three wins in seven games due to weather. The year featured American Education Week, a Class A rating for The Mike, and strong music and drama programs including band, one act contest, and multiple glee clubs.

Osceola Opens Season With Stromsburg At Fair Grounds

Osceola and Stromsburg meet at the fair grounds for the first league game next Sunday at 2 30. The Osceola band will help make it a gala event. Stromsburg defeated a Omaha colored team 4 1 last Sunday while Osceola was idle due to rain. season opener was to be at St Edward.

The Shelby girls softball team completed an undefeated season after last Friday's match. Eva Smith Miller born September 20 1869 near Sidney Illinois died after a yearlong illness at Osceola Nebraska age 68 years 7 months 16 days. She taught school in Polk County and leaves daughter Elsie V Anderson of Chicago plus four Miller brothers Clara J Horst and other relatives. Funeral at Kepner Mortuary May 10 led by Rev Albert Monkman. interment in Osceola Cemetery.

Polk County Grasshopper Fight Gets Under Way

Hoppers are hatching in Polk County amid cool damp weather and a county wide effort led by the Polk County Grasshopper Control Association. Federal bait is on hand for distribution. farmers will report hopper movement to Agricultural Agent Peterson as the hatch progresses and poisoning begins when about half the hoppers are out.

Fairview and Valley Methodist Church Services Cancelled

Heavy rain forced cancellation of services led by Miss Lillian Crouse at Fairview Church. Rescheduled for Sunday May 15 at 10 a.m. Mother's Day observed at Valley Church with a program and decor. Mr and Mrs Harold Combs and sons of Auburn spent the weekend at the David Timm home as they plan to move this week from Auburn to Stromsburg. Mr and Mrs Richard Brooks and Maxine with Mr and Mrs Stephen Brooks visited Ord to see Mrs Orville Lowland and returned home. O F Branting and Raymond Branting with their daughter and Miss Marguerite Senn joined a Omaha day trip. Mrs Branting stayed for a week’s visit.

Henzlik to Speak at 1938 Commencement and Baccalaureate

Henzlik dean of Teachers College at the University of Nebraska will address the Senior Class of 1938 on May 19 at the Muse Theatre. The subject is Education and Freedom. Commencement Exercises begin at 8 o clock with 15 boys and 15 girls in the class. Baccalaureate at the Methodist Church on May 15 at 8 o'clock with Rev. Albert C. Monkman delivering the sermon. Music for both events will be chosen from the high school music department.

Poppies Ready for Poppy Day At Osceola Legion Hall

Poppies from Lincoln's Veteran Hospital arrive at the Wm. Wolfe Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary in Osceola. Crepe paper replicas of the Flanders Fields blooms will be worn on Poppy Day May 21. Disabled veterans produced the flowers in government hospitals and convalescent rooms.
