John Scholz, a former Osceola resident, celebrated his 90th birthday at the Park Manor Hotel in San Diego. Surrounded by family including three sons, six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and his two brothers, he reflected on a long life since moving to California 36 years ago after retiring as a farmer.

Funeral services were held at Greens Chapel south of Osceola Tuesday afternoon, May 8, for F. W. Powell who died at Rest Manor May 5 after months as a patient. Rev. E. C. Williams of Stromsburg officiated and interment followed in Bethel cemetery.

About forty Polk county attendees attended the District Black and White Show at Central City on May 2. The judging contest split into four divisions with blues worth $3 reds $2 and whites $1. Junior winner Patty Dunn earned a blue and $3. Deane Scherer and Katherine Pliefke earned red ribbons and $2 each. Lora Lee Dawes won a white ribbon and $1. Additionally, Rob ert and Lionel Swanson showed purebred 4-H animals, and Paul Swanson entered several head in the show.

The Family Fun Festival drew a crowd over 400 at the fair grounds Friday night. Attendees enjoyed a program of fun, with booths, hot dogs, coffee, and popcorn.
