Osceola’s baseball club traveled to near Platte Center Sunday to face St. John’s. Burt Brazee struck out 24 as the game stretched 17 innings before the teams agreed to resume later with St. John’s visiting Osceola. Osceola will host Shel by on May 20.
St Andrew Altar Society meets May 17 at 2 p m at the Hubert Bernt home with Mesdames Bernt and Zelasney as hostesses. St Andrew Holy Name Society convenes May 22 at 8 p m in the parish hall with Conrad Kropatsch hosting. Hospital Auxiliary gathers May 21 at 8 p m in legion rooms. Gab A Lots hosts breakfast May 23 at 10 a m at Mrs C R Peterson’s. Rebekah Lodge meets May 23. Entre Nous hosted by Mrs Clyde Smith May 23. WSCS Circle I meets May 24 at 8 p m with Mrs Clyde Smith. Matheson Arnold Auxiliary 4998 meets May 22 at VFW Hall, Stromsburg. Social Center School picnic at Osceola Park May 20 with noon dinner. Mr and Mrs Paul Walgreen host What’s Trump Bridge Club May 20 at 7 30 p m. Beulah Cemetery Society meets May 18 with covered dish. Ride A Wees meeting postponed to a later date. NBBC Club hosted by Mrs George Malek. Legion Auxiliary meets May 18 at 2 30 p m in legion rooms.
Osceola Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star sent members to Lincoln for the Grand Chapter sessions. Mrs. H. S. Eklund was chosen as Associate Worthy Matron, and Kenneth Swetz of Polk was elected Associate Patron as part of the county’s representation.
A playful editorial mocks a hydraulic street cleaning machine named Guttersnipe as it runs a trial in the city. It praises its novel sanitation potential then jokes about dusting plans, political buying, and a possible need for a special election to fund the gadget.
A Saturday night storm swept across the county with wind and hail as large as three inches. Farms suffered extensive damage including a destroyed trailer at B W Gertsch farm injuring the Miller family minorly. Widespread window and building damage, flooded basins, and heavy crop losses across multiple farms marked the event. The Record plans to publish photos of wreckage next week.
Barbara Wieseman of Osceola won the judging contest at the District Milking Shorthorn show in Central City on May 8 and earned a trophy and blue ribbon. Lora Lee Dawes of Osceola took second with a blue ribbon, and Douglas Dunn of Osceola placed fourth with a red ribbon.
Mr and Mrs Joe Fjell announce Elizabeth Ann born Saturday May 12 at the county hospital weighing seven pounds one ounce. Addie Wieseman learns her son in law and daughter John and Patricia Sue born Saturday May 12 at Lincoln General Hospital weighing seven pounds ten ounces. Fred and Geneva Ward Perlinger welcomed Frederick Allen, seven pounds six ounces, born May 8 at Madrid Nebraska.
Osceola softball league resumed last Tuesday with Andersons defeating Kepners 11 to 6 and Crouses beating Johnsons 9 to 8. Friday results saw Record best East Side 18 to 5 and Siglers defeating Maleks 18 to 9. Next week will carry Tuesday results and Friday’s, with Siglers vs Kepners and East Side vs Crouses scheduled for May 22.
Mrs. Lester Speirs county chairman of the American Cancer Society reports the drive was very successful, more than doubling the $869 goal. Contributions listed include Shelby 108.20 Osceola 248.10 Stromsburg 300.00 Polk 174.20 with thanks to all who aided.
A 4-H Junior Leader Training meeting is set for Fremont on June 25 and 26 with Polk county expected to attend for the District Timely Topic Contest. Home Agent schedules a May 24 meeting at 1 35 p m at the Court House for all girls 4-H club leaders to review year end tasks and forms. Shelby Go Getters meet May 14 at Larry and Linda McBeth’s home to judge beef calves and plan June 11 at Osceola park. Jerry Dunning reports.
Mildred Henkel and Curtis Flodman of Stromsburg were married Monday morning May 14 at the Polk Methodist church in a double ring ceremony performed by Rev. Birmingham. Attendants were Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Fusby. The couple planned a breakfast at the groom’s parents’ home and then a southern trip before settling in Stromsburg.
Week of May 7 to May 14 lists patients at Annie Jeffrey Memorial County Hospital across Osceola Stromsburg Shelby and surrounding towns. Names include Arthur Anderson Osceola Judy Walgren Osceola Laura Jane Anderson Stromsburg Perry Sapp Osceola and others with many discharges noted.
The Polk County ASC Committee announces no cross compliance on 1956 corn. Each farm must stand on its own corn acreage. Loans for corn grown in non allotment areas and excess acreage will be offered at lower rates than for compliant producers.
The city council reminds dog owners that the 1956 dog taxes were due May 1 and become delinquent May 30. Taxes are 1 dollar for male or spayed dogs and 3 dollars for unspayed dogs. Dogs without current tags may be seized and killed. notify the chief of police if a pet dog lacks a tag.
Polk county voters turned out in greater numbers than the last election though lighter than the prior presidential primary. Republicans led Democrats 795 to 501 in unofficial county results. tallies cover president governor lieutenant governor secretary of state auditor state treasurer attorney general railway commissioner congress and county commissioner races with top delegates listed for both parties. In non political race for legislature Floyd Bond led with 573 votes, followed by P W Aker 410 and Hans O Jensen 222. Mrs George Malek learned her brother in law Lou Shames died suddenly in Long Beach California. funeral service held there with survivors including his wife Mable and two children.
Recognition night at OHS awarded PEO and Chamber honors, Boys State and Girls State nominees, History Medal, Top Ten Honors, FHA degrees, Homemaker winner, Star Farmer Award, and multiple typing and music awards. Commencement exercises named valedictorian Walden Jones and salutatorian Ruth Richards with scholarship announcements.

Eight clubs attended the annual 4-H Sunday at the Stromsburg Baptist Church with about 250 in attendance. The service featured processional flag presentation and songs by Ramblers Top Notchers Perky Pals Perky Debs Sunny Sues Clover Leaf Dairy Classic Lassies Happy Lassies, led by Mrs. Orley Conkling and Mrs. Luther Kreis with Don Conkling giving the benediction and Pastor Ear Byleen delivering the sermon.
Miss Anita Branting of Fre mont spent the weekend here with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Ray Branting and Carol Jean.
Ann Kosch valedictorian of the Shelby graduating class has been named winner of a Readers Digest award for outstanding school work and leadership potential in the community. She also earned a church school scholarship and an honor scholarship from St. Marys College in Omaha and plans to attend there this fall. Kay Taddiken, salutatorian, received the state normal scholarship, while Sharon Coffin earned a Grand Island Business College scholarship and Eugene Reisdorff won Milford Training School scholarships.
Catholic grade school children will attend daily weekday sessions of a religious vacation school from May 21 to June 3. Open to all children six and older, led by Father John Howe with Sisters Emerentia and Geralda of the School Sisters of St. Francis. Sessions held at St. Vincent's 8 15 a m to 12 noon and at St Andrew's 1 30 to 4 p m. Picnics planned at Pawnee Park Columbus May 27 and Osceola Park June 3 for participating children.
The Osceola FFA met to promote Green Hands and install new officers for the coming year. Elected officers are President Vance Finecy Vice President DeVerne Johnson Secretary Mervin Ransom Treasurer Melvin Peterson Reporter Calvin Carlson Sentinel Rex Dake. Members promoted to Chapter Farmer Degrees include Rex Dake Vance Finecy DeVerne Johnson Melvin Peterson and Adrian Iwan.
Osceola Fire Department reschedules its regular meeting to June 7 to allow members to attend a Fire School on May 17 24 and 31.
Osceola High School’s track team finished third in the Class C state meet at Lincoln. Jan Grossnicklaus won the 120 yard high hurdles and placed second in the 180 yard low hurdles. the 880 yard relay team of Bernt, Mickey, Dinges, and Grossnicklaus won in 1 34.8. The squad set multiple meet records across Doane Columbus Goldenrod and district events and graduates six lettermen.
District 48 pupils and teacher Katherine Conkling visited Hastings on May 8. The group toured the House of Yesterday, Debus Baking Company, Wright Potato Chip Co, police station, and KHAS-TV. Accompanying adults included Mr. and Mrs. David Rutter and Valerie, and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Buresh with Margaret Conkling.
Mr and Mrs Rolland Johnson and their girls visited the Warren Johnson home at Stromsburg on Sunday afternoon. Mr and Mrs Herman Thelen Edith Thelen of Shelby and Louis Thelen of Grand Island were entertained at dinner and lunch in the Wm Barry home on Sunday.
