Floyd McBeth age 19 son of Chas McBeth is a Naval Aviation Cadet stationed at Iowa City with the Sea Hawks. He enlisted in February 1944 after attending the University of Nebraska.
Carl Burritt aged 31 died by hanging Monday night in Osceola area. After he failed to appear Tuesday at his farm home, searchers found his body in the barn haymow. He leaves a widow and two small children, his father William Burritt, two brothers, and one sister. Funeral plans not announced.
Mrs Charles Rech and Margaret Anne spent the weekend in Brainard with relatives. The Ben Schmoker family visited relatives in David City Sunday. Miss Phyllis From went to Omaha to spend the week with her sister, Mrs Marvin Iler. Mrs Eula Simpson of Burwell and Mr and Mrs William Campain were Sunday guests of Mr and Mrs Pete Simpson near Swede Home. Friday, the Campains attended the funeral of Glen Suddarth of Rising City.
Polk County announces a new plan for 4-H Judging and Demonstration training this year. A June 29 meeting will cover all demonstration teams and home economics judging. New 4-H clubs are organized under Burdatte Baker and include the Progressive Livestock Poultry Club with several members. Sheep and Wool Association reports 59 wool bags and 4094 pounds invoiced at 24 cents per pound. New seed judging practice samples for barley oats and wheat prepared for Pure Seed Clubs. Certification applications for Pawnee Wheat Cedar Oats Celar Oats are due by May 10 with a May 20 deadline for others. late filings may be rejected.
Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Herrmann departed Wednesday for Alton Illinois for a several weeks visit with their daughter Mrs. Philip Jacoby and family.
Osceola observes Germany’s surrender with fire sirens and church bells. Businesses close, a short Thanksgiving service is held, and President Truman proclaims a day of prayer for the nation.
Bob Grossnicklaus and Stanley Braithwait were inducted into the Merchant Marines in Denver and sent to Catalina Island for boat training. Thos. S. Lockard is wounded in the Philippines and being returned to the U S. Lt. Sam Byers writes from Capri after completing 32 B 24 missions in the Italian front. S Sgt Carl E Moore finishes marine navigation and gunnery school at El Centro and returns to Cherry Point. Ernie Pyle tribute from Scott Field notes. Clair Emmons on 30 day leave with five combat ribbons. Wesley Thelander departs for Santa Monica after furlough. Lawrence Anderson leaves after six weeks to rejoin forces in Hawaii.
State health officials emphasize milk safety to protect families. Key steps include healthy cows tested for tuberculin and Bangs, clean milker, clean clothes and washed hands, udder brushing, sanitizing with clotox, discarding initial draws, sterilized utensils, and proper pasteurization or clean home milk. When children drink milk at home or school, pasteurized or clean milk is recommended.
Eric Hall came back to Malvern Iowa Monday after a week visiting his sister Mrs Joe Chantry and family. He stayed with them during the visit and left with fond memories of the time spent together.
In Polk County, hundreds of mothers hope for a home visit from sons in the armed forces. Notable examples include Mrs. R. N. Hastings and Mrs. Ben Zedicher with multiple sons, grandsons, and relatives serving in Europe, the Pacific, and local training posts.
The Beulah Cemetery Society will meet May 11 at the home of Mrs. R. N. Hastings in Osceola with Mrs. Edith Fineey assisting. Community notes mention Grandma Reitz visiting, Marlene Carlson with grandparents Kasson Dolph, Cpl. David Smith on furlough from Ft. Bliss, and local visits. School closes Friday before the term end and a picnic follows on Sunday.
District No 13 Mr and Mrs Tom Schmoker and Gerald visited the Donald Schmoker home Thursday evening. Pvt Martin Shemek arrived home Wednesday morning to spend his furlough with his parents after basic training at Camp Hood Texas. A family reunion was held at the Martin Shemek home Sunday in his honor. Julius Cerny and family were Thursday evening visitors at the Alfred Gondringer home.
Miss Lorraine Larson of Omaha spent the weekend at her parents home the Clarence Larson family hosted Friday's High Prairie Club in their home Mrs Wallace Fredrickson also hosted a meeting on May 18th and the Larsons visited the Bolton home on Sunday evening with Mr and Mrs Frank Bolton.
Nineteen seniors will receive diplomas at Osceola High School Commencement Exercises on Thursday evening May 17. Baccalaureate Services will be held Sunday evening at the Methodist Church.

John Trogash called on Anton Micek. Micek and Phil drove to Lincoln for business. Marjorie Camp spent weekend in Columbus. Jim Sullivan and Ernie Krusie with families visited near Monroe and Dun ca n with Frances Camp and Frank Ziemba family.
Mr and Mrs Tom Williams and daughter Sherry visited Mr and Mrs Fred Williams near Polk on Sunday. William Lee Stromberg RM 3-c left for Hastings Naval Depot after a 15 day furlough with his parents. Mr and Mrs C M Bennett visited Mr and Mrs Pat Bond. Arthur Pierson of Cedar Rapids Iowa was Friday dinner guest of his sister Mrs Axel Hahin. Morris Johnson hosted supper for Victor Newman York and John Johnson. Thos Kreis hosted Saturday afternoon guests from Lincoln. B L Myers of Osceola was a Sunday guest of his daughter and family.

Mrs Martha Westfall spent several days in Nebraska City with her son Dr Dana Westfall and family.
