Lieut Jack Knight of the Government Air Mail service completed a deal with Mark Timm to lease 40 acres south of the Timm farm for a landing field. A signal tower and light will be installed and work will begin soon. Osceola will sit on the mail route between David City and Central City.
Residents and guests move through Stromsburg and nearby towns with trips to Lincoln Central City York and Thayer. Individuals such as Jay Hastings, H C Beebe, Luella Lovell, and many others attend visits, business, or family events, while others return from Excelsior Springs and Wahoo. Washington L. Ryan born July 8 1829 near Phillips Barb Co West Virginia died April 24 1923 in Sioux City Iowa aged 93 years 9 months 16 days. He married Athaliah Black Aug 30 1849 and had 14 children with several living including Melker J Edgar M Albert and others. He moved from West Virginia to Town then Gresham Nebraska 1878 and helped build local churches. Funeral held April 21 at Gresham Presbyterian Church with grandsons as pallbearers.
Mr and Mrs B L Myers went to Omaha for a few days visit. Thelander Peterson shipped two carloads of hogs to Omaha. Swan Larson spent Sunday at Fritz Johnson’s. A birthday supper honored Herman Larson at Swan Larson’s. Chas Munyon and family from Central City visited Mrs C M Dillsaver. Hollister family hosted dinner with relatives and Kenneth Graves. Iethel Haverland and Oscar Samuelson’s group spent Sunday with R C Draper. Chas Coleburg and Myron visited Victor Thelander. Selma Coleburg returned home. C M Dillsayer learned of his niece Lela Iksers Hattel’s death in Thayer. Funeral for Dillsayer relative attended in Thayer.
Fairview reports show Mrs Bindie Peterson and Mrs Chas Wilcox on a business trip to Columbus. Several residents visit relatives in nearby towns including Woodriver and Grand Island. Family visits include May Dake at W B Dake home and Meachams returning from Gent Kansas with updates on health and hospital status.
Serving his fifth year as pastor, the German M E churches hold a district convention this week and celebrate the Valley church’s fiftieth anniversary. The first anniversary service begins in the Valley church tomorrow.
Mayor Snider and assistants planted trees and shrubs around Arbor Day weekend April 20–22. North park entry closed with grounds changes noted in the northeast corner where a cornfield stood. The south main street entry will remain, with an added east park exit.
The annual reception to the graduating class by the Juniors and the Junior Senior banquet will be held tomorrow evening at the high school gym Nasium. A fine original menu is planned and all four classes will be represented on the toast list. The event closes the school year with happiness.
The annual Alumni Banquet will be held Friday May 25 with committees planning a large homecoming program. A graduating class of forty two, the largest ever, is noted as alumni seek record attendance at the association event.
Professor N W Gaines of the University Extension spoke at Swede Home and Dist 54 Schoolhouse using moving pictures from the U S Department of Agriculture. County Agent Adair attended and discussed farm topics while visits to Shelby Osceola and Stromsburg schools occurred. Mrs Adair joined the Shelby Women's Unit for dress construction discussion. Farm Bureau Board met and formed the August picnic committee comprising Mrs S S Piper W W Burritt and D D Clements.
John Myers started work for the Service Auto Co. last week. C A Stevens visited friends at Harvard. Chas Johnson drove cattle to Omaha. A newborn boy born to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Shefer. Many residents travel to Lincoln and Omaha for work, school, or visits, while local farms and businesses update with sales and improvements as weather impacts schooling and events.
The Woman's Literary Club hosted an open meeting at the Presbyterian church on Tuesday evening. A three course dinner was served in the church basement at 6 30 followed by a short play titled Fudge and the Burglar performed by Esther Lees Zelda Fentress Marjorie Snider and Mrs Margaret Inness. The program ended with the club song America the Beautiful.
R L Harrison moves to Aurora as H L Latsch of York becomes new manager at the light plant. Latsch outlines plans for a future lower rate within three months and a north route power line into Lincoln via Rising City David City Columbus and Wahoo to boost service stability. He oversees Osceola Shelby and Stromsburg with offices in Osceola. Dorothy Potter assists monthly first to tenth. York hosts the company's books.
The O V F D met Friday evening to discuss the city hose purchase and decided to test the new hose Monday night. They tested 600 feet of new hose with half attached to each cart and rewound the best old hose, enriching their fire response capabilities.
The Presbyterian Church in Osceola held a Chicken Pie Dinner in the church basement on Friday evening. It was well attended and netted a little over 60 dollars toward about 65 dollars needed to pay church property taxes. G. T. Ray led the event with committees aiding. women cooked while men solicited, served, and washed dishes.
Gust Sandin, resident three miles west of the city, paid a $10 fine and costs after pleading guilty in county court to disturbing the peace in School District 49. He admitted visiting the school house and abusing the teacher who had whipped his daughter. the school board filed the complaint and County Attorney Stanton prosecuted.
St Pauls Lutheran Church announces a Saturday confirmation class as usual. Luther League will be entertained by the Charles and Grant Walgren families at the church on May 11 at 8 p.m. Ascension Day services led by Kristi Kimmels Fordsdagsdag are set for 10 30 a.m. The Cradle Roll Department plans a Sunday School program on May 13 Mother’s Day.
On May 1 at the Brindle home a wedding joined Verna Alcosta, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Brindle, and Raymond Richard Bond, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Bond of Osceola. Rev. Nelson of Red Cloud officiated. Lillian Campbell and William Thompson attended. a three course supper followed.
The Citizen's Military Training Camp will host six Polk County youths this season if enough attend. Last year participants included Dwight Alverson Eugene B Cunningham and Raymond L Green who praised the program. Jim Morrison Stromsburg school secretary is Polk county committeeman and people can contact Morrison or the Rec ord for information.
The Nebraska House of Representatives held firm on code legislation, ensuring code departments shall be run by elective state officers with no salary for others. The Senate receded, producing a strong taxpayer friendly law. The measure closely mirrors a 2 year old proposal by A. H. Byum of Franklin County.
Morning worship at First Methodist with subject Gods Method of Deliverance and an evening service titled A Tempted Leader Glad to see you at the service. A baby girl of Mr and Mrs Arthur W Carson died at the home of Mrs Car sons parents near Shelby last night and the funeral will be from the Augustine Stine home tomorrow afternoon.
A nighttime lightning strike hit a light wire post near the Ray Raeder home, cutting power service in the area and disabling phones. The Ben Elledge residence and several others lost power as fuses blew. no injuries or fires reported.
Harry W. Pike, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Pike, has been elected assistant secretary of the Lincoln Traction Company, effective June 1. He will work from the Termini Building in Lincoln and brings business credentials from the University of Nebraska and Columbia University finance studies. He served in the U.S. military 1917 to 1919 with overseas duty and is in his twenties.
Attorney H C Beebe appeared in Grand Island for Frank Shank charged with assault in a hold up near Silver Creek last summer. The charge was reduced from felony to assault, Shank pled guilty and received a 70 day jail term. Herman Heinemeyer, linked to the July shooting, was given a hearing and discharged.
Clyde Courtney enters Buick Auto service to manage C. T. Thesing Park agent operations for the county in Osceola. A sales headquarters and display room will open when suitable quarters are secured. Courtney comes from Carson Auto Co and is regarded as knowledgeable in the auto field.
A community committee called Better Osceola plans plans for moral social industrial and civic improvement. The group acts as suggestions only awaiting public authorization and mass meetings to discuss proposals. Chairman W S Heitzman leads a pragmatic effort to boost town pride and appearance.
