Lions Club members commence refurbishing the Peterson office building to prepare for Dr Steve Kuhnel's July dentistry practice. Lion Art Senkbeil leads the effort as volunteers clock 40 hours of labor with local business support noted.
The Polk County 4 H Timely Topics Public Speaking Contest took place Monday April 28 at the Osceola Methodist Church with five participants. Junior entrants Joel Carlson Lori Coffin and Chris Johnson presented topics on environment 4 H projects and related themes earning purple and blue ribbons. Carmen Schott Paula Smith placed in the senior division with topics Alcoholism and 4 H earning blue ribbons. Schott will represent Polk County at the District Timely Topics Contest in Fremont on May 10. Ribbons were donated by KFAB Omaha.
More than 20 youngsters aged 3 to 5 take part in a two week nursery school project in the high school home economics department under Mrs. Margaret Norton. Junior and senior students organize activities while a gerbil runs in its glass cage.
The Osceola Chamber of Commerce announced May 14 as city wide clean up day with a 6 30 p m meeting at courthouse square and trucks arranged for curbside trash pickup. The chamber also approved funding for the county fair trophies the school banquet ad time on KTTT and Memorial Day observance.
Polk County clergymen attended an April 23 session at the Polk County Mental Health Clinic in Stromsburg. Ron Welch explained clinic roles with churches and community, noting Pioneer Mental Health Center’s expanded services and workshops. Roger Glawatz and Kathy Berger described vocational rehabilitation and related programs available by appointment. A service kit was distributed to each visitor.
The 1974 75 women s bowling season ended with an April 22 banquet at Ryan Hill Country Club drawing nearly 100. Officers were elected Myrla Grossnicklaus president Mary Jo Becker vice president Mer ridel Watts secretary and Mary Sterup treasurer. Delores Marak received the Presidential Bowling Award for a second year and Mary Jo Gabel and Monica Schott earned Triplicate Patches. Denise Kresha was named Most Improved Bowler and Kay Lockman won the Converted Split award. The Blue Flames were named League Champion. Season records include Lou Stallings 176 high average and 613 high series, Lucille Osantowski 242 high game, Amity Lanes 921 team game, and 2479 team series.
Osceola High School boys track faced stiff competition at Central City on the 18th, earning four points from Greg Nahrstedt in pole vault. At Fullerton on April 22 the team placed third overall, with Rich Hayes, Nahrstedt, and Steve Johnson each taking a first, and multiple runner up finishes including Johnson in high jump and long jump.
The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts joined Keep Nebraska Beautiful and Community Improvement groups in Osceola with planting, trash pickup, and other efforts. May 14 designated as the town cleanup day, with city trucks to haul waste. The council aims to coordinate beautification projects through the bicentennial era ahead of May 29 to June 1 celebrations.
The USDA outlined operational procedures and initial state funding for the 1975 Agricultural Conservation Program ACP. County ASC Committees will develop practices with approval by State groups. Cost sharing ranges from 50 to 75 percent, with long term forestry services via the Forest Service and Soil Conservation Service support. Farmers may soon submit requests.
