A major Friday evening blaze in Silver Creek confined to the space between the ceiling and roof of the Henry Zoza building, home to the Silver Creek Implement Co. Damage is estimated at 3000 dollars to the structure and 1000 dollars to merchandise, both insured by Silver Creek Land.
At a joint meeting of Nance Merrick and Howard county boards held Monday at the court house a rural fire protection district was established named the Palmer Rural Fire Protection District. In Hershey, voters rejected a $130,000 school expansion proposal, needing two percent more yes votes. 55 percent approval was required for the bonds.
Longtime York resident Jacob Volz who, though foreign born, shows strong charity by aiding people abroad. He recently sent his thousandth overseas gift for the needy through personal solicitation and contributions.
Mrs. Anna Prochaska was guest of honor Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Fred Jensen for her 99th birthday anniversary. She is the oldest county resident.
Mer rick county fishing areas received more than 12,000 fish as part of a major state game commission stocking effort. The 1949 program totaled 4,142,282 fish, including Central City Nonpareil varieties.
Bud dy Hanzel of Cotesfield performed a trombone solo Jackie Lou Anderson played a saxophone solo and DeWayne Russell sang a solo at the Horace Heidt try-outs in Grand Island on Tuesday night passing the attention of Scotia Register readers.
The Platte River overflowed its banks about two miles below the Schuyler bridge on Sunday morning. A new channel formed on the Colfax County side and ran about four townships wide before draining back into the Platte at Roffers.
The Friendly Community Class at Greens Chapel will meet in the community room on April 5. Local residents attenders include Mr. and Mrs. Jo G. Poe and Mr. and Mrs. Ansel Lindaurst. Several birthdays and family visits are noted among area residents.
City and school elections will choose two new school board members from among Wm M Mouden W W Norton Herman A Anderson and Clarence Carlson. Norton and Anderson are incumbents. City ballots feature Ed Almstrom mayor T W Hamilton clerk James J Gibbins police magistrate Rolland Johnson treasurer with First Ward candidate John Malek and Second Ward candidate W F Monson. All nominees are Citizens Party apart from school board non political. Polling places: City Hall First Ward and schoolhouse Second Ward.
The Wesley Chapel WSCS will meet April 6 with Mrs. Merle Dawes. Several Sunday visitors stop by local homes including Mrs. Clara Berck Elton Tom Reece and others. A birthday observance for Geo Anderson and a series of visits and social events are noted across several area households.
Elsie A. Cole of Osceola filed for County Assessor on the Democrat ticket. George H. Bond of Gresham filed for Director of Polk County Rural Public Power District on the Non-Political ticket.
The Polk County Polio Chapter holds its annual meeting in the Polk County Court Room on Tuesday evening April 11 1950 to elect officers and present ten year service pins to two members. Clinton Belknap Northeast Nebraska representative may attend to award pins. Reports will be given and any contributor to the Polio Fund is a member with voting rights.
Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Emmons with sons and Mr and Mrs. Jim Beller and daughter from Lincoln completed a three week journey totaling 7000 miles. They reported no tire or car trouble and paused in Jerome, Idaho to surprise 95 year old John Emmons.
Osceola sent seven schools to the District Declamatory and One act Play Contest held March 24 at Benedict high school. Joyce Morgan earned Excellent for The Button, Rita Kresha Superior for The Show Must Go On and On, and Rosilyn Kennedy Superior for Opportunity and A Fool's Prayer. The One Act Evening Star was not performed due to cast illness. Judge was Prof. D F Kline of the University of Nebraska.
State Farm cuts rates nationwide including Nebraska effective March 27. The Bloomington Illinois home office and Petrus C. Nelson of Stromsburg Nebraska are listed as local representatives. Reductions reach up to 25 percent for bodily injury and property damage, up to 20 percent for comprehensive coverage, and 10 to 25 percent for collision.
The USS Elder convoy ship caught fire in mid Pacific while en route to Eniwetok for an atomic test. All hands were reported safe by dispatches though the Elder A towed back to the west coast. Fourteen crew fought the blaze while twenty six crew escaped in life rafts for four days.
Local churches prepare Palm Sunday High Mass at 7 30 a m with palm blessing and Antiphons. Holy Week includes Passion readings, Holy Eucharist on Thursday, Good Friday Mass of the Pre Sanctified, and Easter vigil with 7 30 a m Mass. A community service at Muse Theatre and a Luther College sacred concert are planned.
Palm Sunday services begin at 10 a.m. with Sunday School and Bible Classes and 11 a.m. divine worship featuring The Palms. Lenten Vesper at 8 p.m. presents Were You There When They Crucified My Lord? and Templed Hills film. Maundy Thursday at 8 p.m. includes confession and sermon Gods Remedy For Sin. Otto B. Nelson assists deacon and Ewald Pliefke and Bette Thelander contribute musically.
Nieces and nephews gathered at Mrs. I J Merrick's home on Monday March 27 to celebrate her birthday anniversary. Present were Mr and Mrs Wallace Logan Mr and Mrs Fred Johnson Mr and Mrs John Scott and Mrs Dorothy Scott of Shelby Mr and Mrs Walter Larson Mr and Mrs Will Ferris of Silver Creek Mr and Mrs Leon Merrick Mr and Mrs Dick Merrick and Linda Mr and Mrs Martin Scholz Laura Scott of Osceola sister-in-law of Mrs Merrick also attended.
Medical notes list Edmund Mustard and August Fischer among Osceola and Silver Creek residents. Homer toning Silver Creek is noted with John Fintel and Edward Swanson also from Osceola. Mrs Camilla Grossnicklaus and Myron Hanson appear in the Osceola area.

Miss Crosby Home Agent reported a District 4-H Camp planning session in Seward with 24 counties represented. Polk County 4-H'ers will attend Seward Camp July 31 to August 2, with leaders urged to join due to limited supervision. A new 4-H girls club formed at Shelby on March 29 will adopt the Hows and Whys project under leader Mrs Wallace Siegl emeyer. officers to be elected at next meeting and a club program set. Nitrogen should be applied to bromegrass as early as possible for seed yields, Dr. M D Weldon notes, with 60 to 70 pounds per acre optimum. fall applications may yield better results.
Funeral services for Alma Hult Flodman of Stromsburg were held Tuesday at Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church Swede Home with Pastor Alfield Franzen officiating. Interment was in Swede Home cemetery. She died March 25 1950 after a brief illness at age 69. The eldest daughter of August and Mathilda Hult she lived on the Swede Home farm before moving to Stromsburg. She married Herbert Flodman September 2 1903 and had two children both deceased.
Osceola residents are reminded that spring is ideal to remove rats. The city offers a free service managed by Gilbert Johnson to address ro dent problems, with costs covered by the city. Residents troubled by rats should contact him.
District 54 residents attended a Saturday pancake supper at the Silver Creek Methodist Church hosted by the Intermediate Youth Fellowship. Ted Wyman accompanied the Ray Nelson family to York on Wednesday, and Lloyd Wamsley with Annette played Canasta with the Raymond Nielsen family Friday. Terry Carman visited District 23 last Tuesday as his parents and Mollie Carman attended the Stromsburg pancake day. Ed Mustard was hospitalized in Osceola last week. The Silver Creek young adult group held a covered dish supper and meeting Sunday night. Zr. Chrisy McCormick spent Friday with his grandparents, Vern and Mrs. McCormick.
The 1950 United States Census will begin April 1 and cover Population Housing and Agriculture as the 17th Decennial census. Enumerators will visit every person dwelling unit farm and certain agricultural operations with strict confidentiality and penalties for disclosure. Polk County has eleven enumerators led by M A Mills Jr with town coverage in two weeks and county in 30 days.
Mrs. Dewey Lockard led a Y Teens bus trip to Omaha and chaired a Y Teen Council meeting. She attended a re districting session in Central City. George Geier and Cedric Fineey group visited Duncan for a funeral. Karen Wieseman stayed with Mr. and Mrs. Meacham for the weekend. Mrs. Bruce Pickett helped with household duties for Mrs. Frizzell after hospital discharge.
The Osceola City Library will open Monday Wednesday 1 00 to 6 00 and Saturday 1 00 to 6 00 and 7 00 to 9 00 starting this week. Mr and Mrs A J Herrmann celebrate their Golden Wedding on Wednesday April 5 with open house at Methodist church parlors from 230 to 430 PM. Bob Husak wins a 100 Union Pacific scholarship for Vocational Agriculture in Polk County. Nancy Sayre earns a Gold Key in Journalism at the University of Nebraska Lincoln, among five seniors honored.
The Osceola fire department invites all members to attend the regular meeting on Thursday night March 30. Special matters will come before the gathering and are to be discussed.
