Olson Construction Company of Lincoln began preliminary work on the new REA headquarters. With good weather and no material delays, completion is expected in July or August.
Miss Jean Farley of Medford Oregon signs a contract to sing with the San Francisco Opera Company. The former Clarks resident, now living in San Francisco, trains under two teachers while pursuing operatic studies in the city.
Ninety nine guns of all types will be sold at public auction along with four buffalo hides and 48 deer skins. The items are described as contraband under state game laws, seized from hunters listed in the Nance County Journal.
Walter E. Divine aged 29 of Portland Oregon heads a five rider cross country bicycle journey with four companions starting in Central City on Wednesday May 18, 1948. Their trip surpassed 14 000 miles as the mileage meter records indicate nine tire sets used by the group.
St Paul Boy Scouts begin a drive this week to raise 300 dollars for a bronze Statue of Liberty replica. The eight foot six inch statue will stand before the new grade school and mark the group’s 40th anniversary program per the St Paul Phonograph.
S J Koch a Her shey area farmer rancher donated 1500 to the building fund. Nine other Platte Valley Hereford association members contributed 500 each, bringing the total to 8225 toward a 30000 structure at the fair grounds per Lincoln County Tribune.

Four girls signed for Hows and Whys and four for Meal Planning projects. A Veterans Wives meeting at Osceola school house discussed Floor Coverings and Their Care. About 135 attended the Roberts Dairy Stromsburg Chamber event with free lunch. Morning tours visited Lavelle Lamore, Paul Swanson, Rolland Swanson dairy farms under Grade A milk agreements. Breeding timing and record keeping were stressed by inseminator Sherman Ferrell. Afternoon sessions covered feeding and management led by M N Lawritson. a color film showcased progressive dairy practices. Kenneth Johnson spoke on quality product markets. Mr. Graham noted market trends for Roberts Dairy. Extension Directors organized for 1950 with Newcomer as President and Kinzli as Vice President among others. The Dairy Breeders met at the Swanson home, celebrating Harlon Johnson’s birthday and noting improved insemination activity and shipment schedules. Septic tank rental forms priced at $3 per setting were announced with upgraded capacity and easier setup.
Farmers must file intentions with the PMA by April 15 to be eligible. The program offers practices such as terracing pond building drainage ditches strip cropping and tree planting with sub soiling new to the county and recommended depths of 14 to 16 inches. The program is voluntary and distinct from the allotment plan.
A record crowd of 222 attended the Father Son banquet in the high school auditorium on Friday March 31. Sponsored by the WSCS of the Methodist church the event featured top hat and Easter bunny decor with a meal served by Methodist ladies. Dick Merrick served as master of ceremonies as Rev Bollinger Dr Robert Mathews L E Hanson Dick Watts gave the program including a baritone solo Polka Militaire Herman Anderson and piano solo LaVern Richards.
Mrs. Mary Staroscik 80 passed away March 29 at St. Marys hospital Columbus after three weeks hospitalization. Funeral held March 31 at St. Anthonys Catholic Church Columbus with burial at Duncan Catholic Cemetery beside her husband Chris Staroscik who died 14 years earlier. Eleven children were born to the family and all attended the funeral.
Osceola high school junior Rosemary Walgreen was elected Second Vice President of the FHA at the state meeting held in Lincoln last week.
An all day session of District 14 Rebekah Lodge took place in Bellwood on Saturday April 1 with 125 in attendance. Osceola district president Mrs. Fred Bond presided. Guest speaker Assembly president Zella Rosenberry of Lincoln addressed the gathering. Eight Osceola Rebekah Lodge members attended.

The Black and White Show will be held at the County Fair Grounds on May 5. Attend with family to view these fine cattle assembled for the exhibition.
The Women's Missionary Society of Stromsburg District joined the W M S of St Paul Lutheran Osceola for its 26th annual meeting on March 29 1950. Morning reports and officer elections followed by afternoon greetings from Rev Wickner Newman Grove and a keynote by long time Africa missionary Mrs George N Anderson.

Mrs. Nellie Benson visited her sister Mrs. Lydia Pope in Silver Creek for a birthday, and church groups share plans for April activities. The 72 Club formed by Fairview Silver Creek churches met 33 members on March 25 and will meet again April 23. Families attend daily meetings in Stromsburg and visit relatives across Genoa Lincoln and Columbus.
Miss Helen Senn of Kearney State Teachers College is among 65 students chosen from 150 for a choir tour to Colorado starting after Easter. Mrs. George Hruska and Drew of Omaha visited Easter with Mrs. Mary Cerny and family.
Gunnard Peterson Polk county sheriff for 16 years died suddenly from a heart attack Saturday morning at Stromsburg hospital after attending the Father Son banquet. Deputy Lee Johnson acts as sheriff pending board appointment. burial set for Wednesday afternoon after viewing at the Baptist church.

The Cub Scout Kite Contest at the Fair Grounds Sunday April 2 was judged by Alex Mills Jr W F Monson and Robert Sigler Jr. Winners included Johnny Red Glen Heckman Lynn Schneider with special ribbons and arrowheads awarded. Den Mothers pin and certificates honored Mrs M Lewenson and Mrs Dewey Sigler. A County Fair and Hobby Show are planned for April and June respectively.
The March period opened with mild temps and light winds but soon brought snow rain and storms. High winds on March 7 reached about 80 mph with extensive building damage. record highs and lows included 70 degrees on the 26th and lows of two degrees on the 12th and 13th. Dust from southern winds on March 22 reduced visibility and several highway deaths occurred. Local observer Harold Klingman reports notable temp readings for the month.
