A group of African extension agents visiting the U.S. to study American agriculture and economics attended a Polk County Lions Club meeting. They were hosted by county agent Glen Krohn and accompanied by Bill Webb, with Dick Howe presiding.
The schedule lists events from Friday March 31 through Saturday April 29 including athletic banquets, track meets at Henderson David City Polk Stromsburg Osceola and Kearney, a Pancake Feed, assemblies by Nebraska Penal Complex, a music festival and district music contest, a senior play, a junior high track meet, and a teachers meeting.

Firefighters answered two fires near Osceola late last week including a grain bin blaze at Laurence Meister farm and a grass fire behind the whip-O-Creme building. Two more fires occurred Tuesday involving a vacant house blaze spreading to light poles and a grass and cornstalk fire at Thelander place five miles west. no damage reported.
Osceola Good Samaritan Center officials seek 10000 in contributions or annuities to furnish a 28 room addition nearing completion. Completion target May 15 to June 1. Furnishings cost about 500 per bed. A licensed practical nurse will join to provide skilled nursing care.
Voters in Osceola and District 19 go to the polls Tuesday April 4 for municipal and school district elections. For the school board two seats are available with Eugene Sterup Alex Mills and Wallace Monson as candidates. in the second ward Earl Watts and Dale Nahrstedt seek the council seat. Richard Howe is sole candidate in first ward. Raymond Chub Miller seeks re election as police magistrate.
About 910 Polk county farm operators have joined the 1967 feed grain and wheat program. Through March 17, 1308 feed grain farms with 140,699 acres of corn sorghum base have signed in, and 28,649 acres are slated for diversion. Wheat signups total 1291 farms with 40,283 acres in wheat allotments. Special bases of 248.6 acres were requested for 13 farms under wheat substitution.
President Johnson directive spurs county Technical Action Panel to provide one stop information on federal state and local programs for rural development in Polk County. Hauser says TAP will coordinate Farmers Home Administration Soil Conservation Service and other agencies to aid projects beyond local resources. Athletic banquet also noted with Red McManus as speaker at Creighton University.
Arrangements for Old Times Day include a stage coach round trip from the town square to the museum on June 1. The American Legion Auxiliary will sell silk patchwork afghans donated by Mrs. Winnie Johnson to benefit the Polk Co Museum Fund. An old and new machinery display will feature Marlin Johnson and Orval Eikenhorst directing events, with Polk County Wildlife planning a window display. Stand chairmen are urged to arrange types of stands with Mrs. Duane Schmoker or Mrs. Floyd Emmons. hats are available from Bert Gissler.
A letter from Osceola notes plans to travel to Sherman Texas with son Tom and family from March 29 to April 7 or 6, praising a pleasant Phoenix winter and noting many visitors. Lee Johnson plans to leave March 27 for Osceola. Gaylen Wiser, 17, son of the Wisers, injured in a motorcycle mishap near the Osceola park, believed to have skid on gravel, breaking a thumb and treated at St Elizabeth Hospital Lincoln before returning home.
The Osceola Chamber of Commerce moved to form another industrial development corporation after a lengthy discussion with Harvey Hyde of Consumers Public Power District. Archie Klein named Dan Armbuster to head the new non profit group. The meeting also covered Highway 92 plans, Old Times Day, Mickey Mansion museum progress with dedication around June 1, and county surveys to be presented next month.
The USDA announced wheat for donation under Food For Freedom will be bought in the open market rather than CCC stocks. Purchases will be handled by the Kansas City ASCS office or branches in Evanston Illinois Minneapolis Minnesota and Portland Oregon. Since July 1 1966 about 16.3 million bushels have been donated to foreign countries under Title II. The move aims to draw wheat from free stocks to meet domestic and foreign needs and minimize CCC stock movement.
Polk County Recreation Association aims to raise membership to 150 families to qualify for an $82 000 FHA loan to buy 95 acres west of Osceola and build a clubhouse with golf and other facilities. Bids for construction open April 20 with a target to finish by late summer or fall. Memberships cost 75 dollars for new members with 25 down and plans to determine second year pricing after operation begins.
